Working on my review for the set, I'm up to 4 ugly commanders currently spoiled - just in the main set not CLU or MKC. I think that's the highest I've had so far. Anybody want to take guesses on which ones they are?

Wild guess:
Etrata, Deadly Fugitive, Lonis, Genetics Expert, Anzrag, the Quake-Mole and The Pride of Hull Clade.

I know a lot of people are freaking out about the mole god but I think anzrag is okay. It's just hard for me to get TOO scared about anything that disruptable. As a voltron commander there are much scarier options (plus voltron is a weak strategy in general), and as a combo build I think it's too easy to disrupt.

I do think he's fairly strong but I also think the design is interesting so overall I think he's good and I'm curious how he'll play. I'm not saying I wouldn't be reasonably wary of him, but he's not must-kill imo.

Getting a little more concerned now lol, hopefully my takes aren't too far off. I do genuinely think all three of the other commanders I've ugly-d are going to make for some frequent groans when they appear at a table.

If someone has enough treasure to be powerful, I think making a bunch of goblin tokens seems like one of the less dangerous things they could probably be doing.

Idk, maybe I'm just so used to seeing Krenko, Mob Boss, but compared to him all goblin commanders look tame. This new one has so much more setup required, and for all that effort it doesn't even grow exponentially.

I think that would make me less scared. Neither the token production nor the growth look all that fast. If there wasn't a mana cost for the tokens, then maybe I'd be scared.

oh gods, my group is cracking me up. They want to do a budget build night (budget is 100 dollars no card over 5 dollars) without infinite combos, but that's easier apparently then seeing if a card was printed after 2011 and Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice is banned

The Pride of Hull Clade - 15 toughness is just stupid. Can come out really fast, keeps its cost low when recast, and if they can find someone dumb enough to not block it, they have infinity card advantage. Blech.

Judith, Carnage Connoisseur - The least offensive of the 4, but the fact that she's Plague Wind incarnate, in a way that, sans counterspells, is basically unavoidable to creature-based decks, sounds really frustrating. If you're trying to go wide and you see Judith, you might as well not play.

Kylox, Visionary Inventor - Narset, Enlightened Master version 2. We'll see if the deck comes together - possibly there's not enough token stuff to support it - but I suspect that if this attacks the game will be over the majority of the time. And it has haste and ward. Ew.

Voja, Jaws of the Conclave - Great, now elves have a Craterhoof Behemoth (minus trample)(except for itself) in the command zone. And it also has ward, which could easily be unpayable if he's ramped out, which he will be. God I hate elves, why is there a tribal for creatures that are already extremely effective ramp? Piss off fr.

Honestly not much liking the commander options this set. My favorite is probably Trostani, Three Whispers - which I admit is impressive, never would have thought they'd make a trostani that I liked. Lazav, Wearer of Faces is also cool, though seems hard to build well.

I have no idea what most of their decks do and it is a lot of fun sitting down across the table from something and wondering what that deck is going to do. I will say, I only brought two decks up with me, so next time I'm back home I'm taking a few more back up with me. One thing I have noticed is that the meta is much more hostile, with a couple of unfun decks making the rounds, like theft tribal and mono-blue counterspells.

I can't stop thinking of how terrifying it would be to be in a pool with rogue not wearing a full body suit. You accidentally brush by her and end up in a coma. Its like leaving razor blades on a running track.

I will say, I only brought two decks up with me, so next time I'm back home I'm taking a few more back up with me. One thing I have noticed is that the meta is much more hostile, with a couple of unfun decks making the rounds, like theft tribal and mono-blue counterspells.

Get your hands on some Cavern of Souls and Homeward Path. If you really want to hate on these strategies there are commanders you can resort to like say Chromium, the Mutable or Nezahal, Primal Tide. You can also get some milage out of going tokens with a low curve approach rather than trying to resolve big X spells but it tends to require a little more finesse to pull that off well. Something as simple as adding more Lightning Greaves to your decks can help against the theft deck and you can run some effects like Defense Grid against the counterspell deck.

I generally don't lean too hard into answers for these sort of things unless they become really rampant and a big problem. Generally a theft deck has a hard time of closing out games and often plays 3v1 magic as can a counterspell heavy deck. I tend to punch the counterspell player every turn if they counter my stuff and they often have a hard time defending themselves and countering everything.

Yeah, often times it's not that those decks are taking over and dominating the game, but instead they draw inordinate amounts of aggro and leave the game as a 1v1v1 after the counterspell/theft player gets left with little/no resources. Obviously this isn't just a symptom of the decks they are playing, but also a symptom of the fact that coming out swinging as a threat in commander isn't always the best play.
