Standard Ladder Tier List: July 29, 2021
1627571100Mason Clark
Standard Ladder Tier List: July 29, 2021
We have had a weekend of events following the announcement of SCG con’s return. With pressure on the format it has evolved and now we are seeing some new decks joining the cast. Let's hop into the tier list and see what's going on. Before we dive into the list, here’s a quick refresher on the tier list grading criteria: S Tier: Decks that are above the rest. This is normally the default “best deck in the format” and the deck(s) you should have in mind when building or picking your deck. A Tier: Decks that are great. These decks are knocking on the door of S Tier, but they may have a small weakness that keeps them out of the upper echelon. B Tier: Good, solid decks. You wouldn’t be surprised if a B Tier deck takes down an event, but they have bigger weaknesses or liabilities than the decks in A Tier. C Tier: Decks that are totally fine, but not notable. These decks aren’t exactly tearing up the tournament or ladder scene, but you should expect to face them every now and then. D Tier: Decks with strong elements, but that generally aren’t great choices compared to the rest of the format. Without further ado, here’s the list! Sultai View full decklist Sultai has been a top player in the format since the release of Kaldheim. In the past, it had decks like rogues to prey on it, but now with rouges getting too far outclassed in other matchups, we are seeing Sultai rise to the top as the uncontested best deck. Temur View full decklist Gruul View full decklist Mono Green View full decklist You will notice a trend here of decks that can get on the board quickly and either kill the Sultai players or disrupt them just enough. Both Mono-Green and Gruul are looking to quickly put the pressure on Sultai before they can cast their massive spells. We see Temur Adventures do a similar thing but lean on some permission as another additional way to prevent the large spells. These decks all have a nice grindy aspect to them as well that allows them to compete with the next tier of decks and not be overtaken by them. Jeskai Combo View full decklist Naya Adventures View full decklist Naya Winota View full decklist Starting with the flashiest deck on today's article we have Jeskai Mutate. Jeskai looks to do their own combo and invalidate the Sultai players. Jeksai Mutate put up some good results and expect to see slightly more of it in the coming weeks. Naya Winota and Adventures are both fine decks that look to get board control. While Wionta looks to close the game out quicker than Naya both are trying to build up an overwhelming board presence. Izzet dragons View full decklist Dimir Rogues View full decklist These last two decks are ones that try to put all their chips in on Sultai being the deck to beat and are primarily trying to win on that axis. Unfortunately, this often comes at the expense of the other decks and in the case of rogues. You ha

Forgotten Realms Commander Upgrade Guide: Dungeons of Death

Forgotten Realms Commander Upgrade Guide: Dungeons of Death
I’ve often said in my articles here that Commander is the perfect marriage between Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. So I’m very happy that with Magic finally getting an official D&D crossover set, WotC made sure to extend that experience into the game’s premier multiplayer format. The four precons available with Adventures in Forgotten Realms are each commanded by members of a powerful adventuring group - and today I’ll be breaking down and suggesting upgrades for the party wizard, Sefris of the Hidden Ways! Sefris of the Hidden Ways SHE’S THE UN-LIFE OF THE PARTY If you’re like me, you heard “Esper Wizard Commander” and assumed that this would be a heavily blue deck playing a classic, spell-based control game. But it turns out the “Hidden Ways” is a polite euphemism for “necromancy”, and Sefris is actually far more concerned with getting huge white and black creatures into your graveyard en route to the battlefield! In D&D terms, her signature spell is “Create Undead” - a more powerful incantation producing undead who remember their past lives and abilities, instead of mindless skeletons and zombies. Huge flavor win for the AFR design team! Reanimator themes are quite popular in Commander, as one of the most powerful and flexible things to be done in white or black decks. But Sefris does add a very Forgotten Realms twist - her ability to personally reanimate creatures requires you to first complete one of AFR’s signature dungeon cards! I love when Commanders have little caveats of this sort, as they challenge us to look beyond the obvious staples for Reanimator for new synergies while allowing WotC to print Sefris with a very low mana value for what she provides. A DUBIOUS VENTURE Our Commander being blessed with a low mana value and powerful ability means we may as well build around having Sefris in play and casting Create Undead on every turn possible. That means speedrunning our dungeons, especially the two shorter ones - Lost Mine of Phandelver and Tomb of Annihilation. Lost Mine of Phandelver Tomb of Annihilation We don’t have room for a full refresher on dungeons today, but you can always check back to my mechanic spotlight article if you need to swot up on how these work! We can only Create Undead once for every four venture triggers; maybe three if we’re in a good enough spot to push through the Oubliette room of Tomb, though I wouldn’t count on that. The actual room effects we can choose along the way are a pleasant bonus, particularly the tokens and card draw, but they aren’t the kind of thing that is worth putting much emphasis on in Commander. And that’s also true of spells that help generate more triggers: with only a single Standard set to draw from for the venture mechanic, trying to find more dungeoneers to speed up our Sefris engine will quickly leave us sifting through draft chaff. Commander Kingdom Decklists: July 2021
This month on Commander Kingdom, we've got three guests that are coming strong with the shenanigans! Ellie of the Veil is a writer for Channel Fireball and part of the A Cause for Commander series. Princess Weekes is an assistant editor for The Mary Sue and can be seen on YouTube and PBS. Ben Wheeler is a Twitch streamer, part of the LRR family, and starting a takeover of his slot, as he'll be sticking around through September! These three have come ready to play, each with wildly different deck ideas that Chris is somewhat afraid to go against! Commander Kingdom airs this Wednesday, July 28th, at 2 pm PDT; check out our guests' decklists below! Ellie of the Veil's Wort Spells View full decklist Ellie's Wort, The Raidmother deck, answers the question - What deck should I play if I really like making small tokens but want to cast as many spells as I possibly can? With a bunch of ramp, small creatures, and token-making cards, this deck lets you cash in all those small bodies and mana with some big haymakers as finishers! Princess Weekes's Banana Hazelnut Midrange 86 View full decklist Sometimes, you just want to play good old-fashioned midrange, high-value creatures, and spells that demand answers…if not immediately, then right quick. With Oloro providing a steady stream of value no matter what he is, Princess's deck just keeps asking, "do you have it?" over and over again until, eventually, you don't! Ben Wheeler's Nuts and Bolts View full decklist Leave it to Wheeler to build a Chatterfang deck and purposefully not make Squirrel Tribal. No, Wheeler has gone thematic, instead of focusing on the horde of stuff that Chattfang would acquire, with all sorts of artifact tokens just piling up, turn after turn, until they can become the fuel for an avalanche of value that just grinds you to dust! Chris's One Person's Trash… View full decklist Chris's deck has one simple goal - amass enough money to drown your opponents, Scrooge-McDuck diving-into-the-coin-vault style. Prosper likes making treasures, and Chris has assembled cards that like using those treasures to kill your opponents, either directly through damage and life loss or in more sneaky ways. Follow us on Twitch, so you don't miss the show, and check out more Commander content here on the Card Kingdom Blog. 3 Unique Commanders that Deserve More Love

3 Unique Commanders that Deserve More Love
Every commander is unique, and no two decks are alike. However, some legendary creatures see a lot more play than others; these are usually the face commanders of preconstructed decks, or the more obviously powerful choices in a particular archetype. When these decks make up a lot of the collective pool in Commander, some of the more interesting commanders don’t always receive the love or attention they deserve. I’ll bring you through three decks today, each of which is piloted by more obscure commanders that highlight unique aspects to their colors. They all required a little more work to build than the average deck, but the reward of a truly incredible play experience is well worth the time. I have built all three decks to be under $100 in budget; this is the sweet spot between power and affordability to me, giving you the highest power-to-dollar ratio. They can all be upgraded to include more powerful or pricey cards, but they’re currently built to fit in comfortably at any mid-powered table. Laelia, the Blade Reforged - Exile Voltron Mono-red decks are usually known for the amount of damage they can deal, or the number of Goblins they create. While these are both fantastic ways to play, red can sometimes feel like it’s a little lacking in diversity. Laelia, the Blade Reforged is one commander that has flown under the radar since her debut in the Strixhaven preconstructed deck, Lorehold Legacies. At first glance, she appears to be more of a supporting character: repeatable value that can become a threat over time. I’m sure a lot of players haven’t even considered what a deck with her in the command zone would look like, and I wouldn’t blame them; “exile matters” is hardly a theme that conjures up an immediate list of staples to get started with! The goal of this deck is to use Laelia as your main offensive while continuously exiling cards from your library and graveyard for value. Cards like Outpost Siege give you an extra card every turn while also growing your commander; when you have multiple effects like this, you can end up matching Simic decks in card advantage, albeit in a unique way. Cascade also triggers Laelia’s growth ability, so cards like Throes of Chaos are ideal to keep the gas flowing and prevent flooding. You can also run a lot of graveyard hate, as it pulls double duty here: Relic of Progenitus can be used to exile a card every turn to pump Laelia, or can be used to shut down graveyard-heavy decks. One of the main ways that red decks accrue value is through cards like Unexpected Windfall. They work in conjunction with flashback spells like Increasing Vengeance to mitigate the discard effect. It’s best to think of this deck as one that spreads your hand across several zones, rather than keeping them all in your grip. I think deck building in red can be overhauled to place greater emphasis on this approach; as this deck will show you, you rarely ever run out of options or things to

Looking for Inspiration? Play a Lower-Power Commander
1627311600Kristen Gregory
Looking for Inspiration? Play a Lower-Power Commander
Sometimes, it can start to feel like you’re playing the same game of Commander over and over again. The players in your playgroup haven’t refreshed their decks for a while, you’re wise to their tricks, and you’re stuck on what to try building next. If you’re lacking inspiration, then maybe it’s time to play some low-power Commander. Decks Feeling Stale Even your favorite deck can end up feeling a little stale from time to time. This can, of course, be remedied by upgrading and tinkering with it when new cards release. However, it rarely manages to scratch that itch of wanting to experiment in a new sandbox. One of the best parts of Magic is how varied the gameplay is. From set to set, Wizards manages to keep things fresh. I’ve spoken before on how important keeping gameplay fresh is for me, and also on conserving design space. My retinue of decks seeks to be constantly providing novel experiences by avoiding similar builds, and cutting shared instances of the same card where possible. I’ve got both Sigarda, Host of Herons and Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale as Voltron-themed decks, for example, but both couldn’t be more different -- one’s Enchantress, and the other all about Equipment. Likewise, my Golgari decks are pretty different, too: Meren is a classic value Aristocrats build with an X-spell finish, while Lathril, Blade of Elves is built entirely around getting Lathril’s ability to go off with cards like Mobilize. While I could be more consistent with the good ol’ Craterhoof Behemoth, I instead opted to jump through more hoops; sometimes, jumping through hoops is more fun. The thing is, at higher levels of play, you’ll end up playing the same cards more often between decks, and the amount of space for sub-optimal cards and strategies, including pet cards, will often be close to zero. I always try to add a pet card to personalize even my higher-power decks (such as running Time to Reflect instead of the more versatile Swords to Plowshares in my Varina Zombies list), but that often doesn’t satisfy the need to experiment. There are more and more “staples” printed every year, and more and more cards that are touted as “must play” cards. It’s hard to argue with wanting to include Esper Sentinel in every white deck, Suspend in every blue one, or Damn in every Orzhov one, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. When decks can feel like they’re becoming “solved,” there’s one surefire way to have some more fun. Just take your foot off the pedal! Lower-Power Commander There’s an important distinction to make between Lower-Power Commander and what many refer to as “jank”. Case in point: I have a Lord of the Rings deck, led by Kenrith, the Returned. It’s a Vorthos love letter to Return of the King, and as much as it has a powerful commander, it’s a really… unimpressive pile. It has a couple of fun synergies, but because every spell -- from removal, to draw, to creat

The Watchtower 03/01/21 – Core Values
Core sets have always been Wizard’s way of introducing Magic to new players and trying to reel them into the game. They’re generally unthemed and use more basic cards and abilities compared to regular sets, and contain a bunch of reprints. Wizards tried to do away with them back in 2015 with Magic Origins supposed … Continue reading The Watchtower 03/01/21 – Core Values →

Right now, presuming the Collector Booster is $20, there aren’t a lot of cards that you can hit to make it worthwhile. I’ll give you the list in a moment, but first let’s talk about what to do when a set isn’t being opened very well, and the opportunities that represents. Plus, some cards that … Continue reading When Nothing Is Worth It →

If you play MTG, you’ll almost definitely have heard the name LSV. That’s Luis Scott-Vargas for you guys and gals who’re hearing the name for the first time. He’s in the Magic hall of fame, is one of three players who’ve achieved three ProTour top 8s in a row, and an all-out extraordinary player. Not only in Standard but across the board of competitive formats. He also helped launch Channel Fireball, writes strategic articles, is a game developer, and hosts several podcasts. Deck Guide: Izzet Tempo/Control in Standard
This Izzet deck went into a hiatus after the last Standard rotation and a sort of full obscurity, but now it’s back. Is it strong, though? Absolutely! While the deck runs a lot of control elements, it's also full of extraordinary creatures. Most players call it a tempo deck, but I’d much rather classify it as a control deck seeing how we’re running a pretty steep curve with [card]Goldspan Dragon[/card] and such. Whatever the terminology, the deck is fantastic. The post Deck Guide: Izzet Tempo/Control in Standard appeared first on Draftsim.

That would be [card]Showdown of the Skalds[/card], often seen as an underpowered version of [card]Escape to the Wilds[/card].
Speaking of new angles for Selesnya to explore, we see red and blue get lots of cards that take control of your opponent's things. Usually by force. Selesnya (or Abzan?) seems like it's very willing to "take in" those which other colors might not tolerate. Would there be any world where a white-green effect would allow you to get your opponent's creatures to join your side? Perhaps when their controller is seen throwing their other friends under the bus and using them as fodder?

Stealing creatures is primary blue, secondary red, tertiary black. Green and white are the two colors that don’t do it. (Preacher and the Preacher callback are both breaks.)
