60 Essential Cards for Your Modern Collection

60 Essential Cards for Your Modern Collection
Whether you're new to Modern, returning to Modern, or are an enfranchised player, collection management is important. While Modern often doesn't transform overnight, there is usually some movement within archetypes in order to adjust to the metagame. Having a well-maintained collection can help you avoid scrambling for cards before a tournament, as well as potentially dodging price spikes.  The first step in building a collection is to make sure you have access to all of the appropriate Modern essentials. Today, we’ll be going over the most important Modern cards to have in your collection. Lands Much like a house, every Modern deck needs a strong foundation. Having access to the right lands can greatly increase the number of decks you can play. Let's take a look at a handful of lands that will go a long way.  Fetch Lands Throughout the course of Modern's history, you'd be hard pressed to find many top tier decks that didn't have some number of fetch lands. Decks commonly use 4-12 fetches, depending on how complex their mana base needs to be.  Newer players will sometimes look at fetch lands and ask themselves, "Why would I ever play this? It costs me one life to get a land; I could just play a land, anyway, for free." The primary answer to that question is color fixing. Fetch lands are the best tool for making sure that you have the correct colors of mana to cast your spells. In addition to mana fixing, fetch lands have some extra utility with common cards in the format. The damage incurred from fetch lands is less of a downside when you’re playing Death's Shadow or Scourge of the Skyclaves, which use that cost as an advantage. Fetches also enable triggering landfall twice in the same turn, which is valuable if you're playing Omnath, Locus of Creation, Ruin Crab, or Hedron Crab. If you’re playing Mishra's Bauble, you can target yourself and use a fetch land to shuffle away the top card of your library if you don’t want it. Finally, there are some sacrifice synergies with cards like Mayhem Devil, which will get you a little bit of damage whenever you sacrifice a fetch land. Shock Lands The shock land cycle, originally released in the first Ravnica block, are the premier dual lands in Modern. Because shock lands have land types (Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, Forest), they are searchable with fetch lands, forming a powerful mana-fixing duo. Shock lands are the backbone of the Modern mana base because the power level increase of playing multiple colors in a deck is often worth the life loss. Urza’s Saga At this point, it may seem like Urza’s Saga can do basically everything -- and that isn’t entirely false. This card has many potential applications, but in order to keep things brief, let’s go over the highlights: Generates multiple uncounterable creatures that get huge in the right decks Tutors for key artifacts such as Colossus Hammer, Shadowspear, Nihil Spellbomb, and Mishra’s Bauble Pr

Should Alrund’s Epiphany Be Banned in Standard?
1634223600Mason Clark
Should Alrund’s Epiphany Be Banned in Standard?
With the Magic World Championship in the rear view, the one question on everyone's mind has been, “Can any deck consistently beat Alrund’s Epiphany in Standard?” Izzet Dragons may have won the trophy, but Alrund’s Epiphany remains the biggest force to be reckoned with in the format. The calls for a ban that began long before Worlds have only intensified. In yesterday’s B&R announcement, Wizards shared that they’ll be monitoring the format closely, but won’t be making a ban decision until after Innistrad: Crimson Vow comes out. But even with new cards entering the format, will Alrund’s Epiphany still reign supreme? What will it take to challenge its dominance? Today, we’ll be laying out the arguments for and against banning Alrund’s Epiphany. The Case for Banning Epiphany Alrund’s Epiphany is powerful because it represents the absolute top end of the format. Going over the top by taking multiple extra turns in a row is a huge challenge for any deck, particularly midrange decks that are built to interact. Banning the card would prevent games from being so non-interactive and punishing for midrange decks. As it stands, all midrange decks must have a plan for Alrund’s Epiphany, or they have to be aggressive enough to defeat the Epiphany player before their plan goes into effect. But if too many midrange decks become more aggressively-focused, the non-Epiphany decks all start to look the same. The result is a two-deck format: You're either trying to go way over the top of everyone, or you’re trying to go underneath everyone and beat them quickly. There’s another big reason to ban Alrund’s Epiphany, which is a tad more contentious: the play pattern isn’t fun for opponents. The games all end the same way: with one player taking a couple turns in a row and hitting you with birds. It’s a very anticlimactic way for the game to end. I’ve covered this in previous articles, but it bears repeating: part of Magic’s beauty is that every game is different. Every game, you get a random hand with a random draw, and so does your opponent. Every turn, you get a new opportunity to draw a card that might change the tides of the battle. Taking all the turns negates this experience for one of the two players at the table. While some players do enjoy getting to do this and have the combo experience (myself included), you do have to weigh that experience against the impact it has on everyone else. Having one out of every 30 matches end in a string of turns is a lot easier to handle then one out of every two matches. The case for banning Alrund’s Epiphany is strong. There are even more layers to this that we could dive into, like how the diversity of answers to Epiphany are all in blue, or how the foretell ability makes Epiphany even harder to answer. But I also think there’s a strong case for keeping Epiphany in the format, and I’d like to present that as well. The Case Against Banning Epiphany We can st

Innistrad: Crimson Vow Predictions
How goes the haunting, my fellow magicians of the macabre? We’re getting deep into the spooky season now; Halloween approaches, and with it, the sinister intermission between the two halves of Magic’s ongoing Innistrad double feature! Yes, there’s still plenty of screams to wring out of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt in the remaining month before Innistrad: Crimson Vow hits shelves. Indeed, I have already wrought one blog of fearsome predictions for these paired Innistrad sets, some of which already foreshadow the scares to come in Crimson Vow. But in order to build some classic horror atmosphere (and get in ahead of WotC’s own previews), I’ve decided that now is the time to unleash my Crimson Vow set predictions upon the land.  Lock your doors and bar your windows… or leave them open, and ponder the terrors which will soon enough surround us all! RETURNING MECHANICS SAFE BET: Soulbond In a set centered around the joining of two souls in unholy matrimony, what could be an easier fit than this?! Flavorful, powerful, and highly unique, soulbond holds appeal for all of the traditional player identities. It’s even a native Innistrad mechanic, having debuted back in Avacyn Restored. Soulbond may have limited design space, but the base characteristics of the creatures printed with it open up those possibilities. Imagine giving Lightning Mauler’s “soulbond for haste” text to a 5/5 flyer! There’s also plenty of potential for more advanced soulbond effects. Both creatures could get “+X/+X, where X is the other’s power,” or “whenever this creature dies, if it was bonded, return it to the battlefield.” The open-ended timing of how bonds are formed is notorious for creating havoc with Deadeye Navigator, but in all other cases, it’s an invitation to make cool, spontaneous plays. So why not bring it back and print a fixed Navigator (that gives creatures a “phase out” active) while we’re at it! JUST A HUNCH: Bloodthirst I promise this prediction is only 50% because of the name – but you have to admit, that’s a real advantage if they bring it back. The theme is obvious enough that bloodthirst has been used as a signature Vampire mechanic before, albeit not in Innistrad sets. But there’s a couple of reasons to suspect this might be the time for it to reappear: Now this is a vampire marriage I can get excited about! First of all, the Vampires in Midnight Hunt showed us our most combative, damage-focused view of the tribe yet. And without the sacrifice- or discard-focused shenanigans of the last two Innistrad blocks, the Vampires should be due for a new mechanical tentpole. Based on Vampire Socialite, Stromkirk Bloodthief, Florian, Voldaren Scion and others from Midnight Hunt, that central theme already cares a lot about “drawing blood” each turn to keep the excitement high. Bloodthirst allows you to easily keyword the most common version of these effects (and perhaps all of them) withou

MTG Keywords Explained: Convoke
Do you like saving mana on casting your spells? How about utilizing your creatures the turn they come into play? Today, we take a look at a Magic mechanic that allows your creatures to help you pay for your spells: convoke! What is Convoke? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d0Lhvs9CFc Convoke was first introduced in Ravnica: City of Guilds in 2005. As the signature mechanic of the Selesnya Conclave, convoke represents a collective working together for the greater good. And in this case, the greater good is casting big spells early! When you're paying the cost for a spell with convoke, you can tap a creature you control to help pay for it. Each creature you tap pays for one mana of that spell's casting cost. If the spell has colored mana symbols in its casting cost, tapping a creature of that color can pay for that mana, while any creature can cover generic mana. Convoke isn’t an alternative cost, nor really a discount. It’s an alternative way to pay the full cost of your spell. Of note, you can tap summoning sick creatures to convoke. The convoke ability is what's forcing the creatures to tap -- not an ability of the summoning sick creature. You also aren’t changing the mana value of the spell by convoking it, you’re just paying that total mana value. And if you’re casting a spell that has kicker or another additional cost, you can convoke to pay for that additional cost. Convoke is an ability that rewards you for filling the board with creatures, as you can continue casting spells and still have mana available for yet more spells and abilities. It's primarily found on green and white cards, and it works especially well with tokens strategies. Check out all the cards with convoke at Card Kingdom, and consider adding some to your decks! Best Commander Decks for Beginners
Learning and playing Magic can be an exciting experience. There are so many cards, formats, and decks to choose from, and there’s always something new to learn. As thrilling as this is, starting out can feel daunting. Take Commander for example: there are over 1,200 commanders to choose from, and that figure is growing rapidly every year! Even for more seasoned players like myself, choosing the right deck or commander can feel like an impossible task. If you’re new to Commander or Magic in general, this guide should help you to choose your first deck or commander. I’ll give you an in-depth look at four of the most popular Commander deck archetypes, including different options for good starting commanders. Lands Lands are the basic resource in Magic, as they allow you to play your spells. While they may be the basic building block behind every deck, they’re far from boring! Lands decks focus on getting extra advantage from making your land drops, and even let you play several lands per turn. Most Lands decks tend to have green in them, as it’s the color with the best support for land strategies. There are two main kinds of cards you’ll see in Lands decks: cards that let you play extra lands each turn, and cards that reward you for playing lands. Exploration is one of the most well-known Lands cards; it gives you an extra land drop every turn, which is exactly what these decks need to do their thing. There are countless cards that reward you for playing lands, and Rampaging Baloths is one of the more popular choices. Its landfall ability is very popular in Lands decks, and in Commander in general. If you couple this with Exploration, you can see how this can get out of hand quickly! Lands decks are often considered to be “ramp” or “big mana” decks as well. These are decks that generate a lot of mana quickly to play huge spells ahead of schedule. With the amount of lands you’ll usually be playing, it’s easy to see the similarities! Reshape the Earth is a great example of a huge spell that Lands decks could make great use of, especially if you have a Rampaging Baloths on board. As for commanders, you’re spoiled for choice. EDHREC’s Lands Theme page lists 24 of the most popular commanders for the theme, and many others are perfectly viable as well. If you want to play a relatively fair and interactive deck, Tatyova, Benthic Druid is a great choice. She’s currently one of the most popular commanders, and for good reason: whenever you play a land when she’s on board, you draw a card. You don’t have to worry about card draw spells in your deck with this kind of value in the command zone, so you can play more fun cards instead! If you’d prefer to be a little more aggressive, Omnath, Locus of the Roil is the commander for you. Its landfall ability is one of the strongest available, and if your board gets blown up by a sweeper, Omnath will dish out a ton of damage as payback. If you love to play w

Slime Time! Modern Combos with Slogurk, the Overslime
Season 11, Episode 9: Brew Session (Slogurk, the Overslime) + Flashback (Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset)   Creatures above two mana have a hard time breaking into Modern, but Slogurk, the Overslime just might have what it takes. The leaves-the-battlefield trigger is worth three cards, which you get no matter what happens to Slogurk. The Ooze even comes with a built-in way to bounce itself, protecting itself from removal and cashing in on those three cards.    Broadly speaking, Slogurk asks us to 1) Put lands into the graveyard, then 2) Get lands back from the graveyard. We need to find cards that enable this efficiently and profit from the effort. This will take us into the Lands space, as well as synergies with Graveyard recursion and self-mill space. We also need to decide if we want to trigger Slogurk’s leaves-the-battlefield effect ourselves, or be content with relying on our opponent to kill Slogurk.    The list of Modern playables that feed into these synergies is very long indeed, so we’ll need to do our research to unlock the secrets of this ooze. We’ve got five new decklists with Slogurk to try to find a home for it in Modern. Slogurk is oozing with potential (sorry, had to do it) so let’s see what it can do! **** Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! **** Decklists for this episode can be viewed at FaithlessBrewing.com ****   Timestamps Brew Session: Slogurk, the Overslime [4:38] Rules notes [7:49] How powerful is Slogurk? The Watchtower 03/01/21 – Core Values
Core sets have always been Wizard’s way of introducing Magic to new players and trying to reel them into the game. They’re generally unthemed and use more basic cards and abilities compared to regular sets, and contain a bunch of reprints. Wizards tried to do away with them back in 2015 with Magic Origins supposed … Continue reading The Watchtower 03/01/21 – Core Values →

Deck Guide: Izzet Tempo/Control in Standard
This Izzet deck went into a hiatus after the last Standard rotation and a sort of full obscurity, but now it’s back. Is it strong, though? Absolutely! While the deck runs a lot of control elements, it's also full of extraordinary creatures. Most players call it a tempo deck, but I’d much rather classify it as a control deck seeing how we’re running a pretty steep curve with [card]Goldspan Dragon[/card] and such. Whatever the terminology, the deck is fantastic. The post Deck Guide: Izzet Tempo/Control in Standard appeared first on Draftsim.

Do you think magic will ever have a symbol for “mana of any color” to save on text box space? Alternatively, do you or does anyone you work with have a shorthand for “mana of any color”?
I never say never, so maybe one day we’ll have a world where it mechanically makes sense, but, in general, it’s not all that interesting of a restriction. EDIT: Oops, I misread this one, thinking it was taking about it as a cost. I believe a symbol representing the output of any color mana would cause two problems. First, it would create confusion as the symbols wouldn’t match between what you produce and the needs of the mana cost. Second, it would have ramifications in Commander, I don’t think most players would be happy with (five-color producing lands would only be playable in five-color decks).
