Combo Crash Course: Dark Depths

Combo Crash Course: Dark Depths
Welcome back to Combo Crash Course, our semi-regular exploration of Magic’s greatest combo decks. This week, we’re kicking things up a notch in the power department. While previously, we’ve spent some time with famous combo decks from Standard, Historic and Modern, this will be our first time delving into the explosive combo potential of eternal formats like Legacy, Vintage, and Commander.  Increasing the size of the card pool tends to empower combo decks relative to other archetypes, and eternal formats have the largest card pools of all (every black-bordered printing is legal by default). Cards can be banned for balance reasons, or excluded due to format rules, but this still leaves a critical mass of powerful and unique cards from across three decades of Magic. Some of the strongest – and weirdest – combo decks arise here, as cards printed years apart synergize in ways their designers never expected… WHAT IS DARK DEPTHS? Dark Depths is one of the more unique combo wincons in Magic history. The namesake card is the rare non-mana-producing utility land, which tempts players with an instantly-lethal flying monster – all for the low, low price of… 30 mana. Ouch.  That’s way too much to pay for anything, but a 20/20 creature with flying and indestructible is worth getting a bit tricky for. And after some fortuitous printings years later in Zendikar and Gatecrash, combo players found their ways: Vampire Hexmage was the first card other than Aether Snap capable of removing all ice counters from Dark Depths at once and summoning Marit Lage. Thespian’s Stage achieves the same result by targeting Dark Depths with its copy ability; Depths normally gets its ice counters as it enters the battlefield, so making a copy of it that’s already in play skips the counters and immediately unleashes Marit Lage. You do need to sacrifice both the original copy of Depths (to the legend rule) and Stage (to the Lage trigger), but the 20/20 is definitely worth it! Both these combos are incredibly efficient, each costing a total of two mana to go from empty board to Marit Lage. From a deck building perspective, there’s a low opportunity cost – in non-combo situations, you’re far happier to draw a first strike blocker or extra land than a do-nothing sorcery. Best of all, you can fire off either combo at instant speed, which lets you unleash Marit Lage during your opponent’s end step and immediately untap and attack for the win. These twin upgrades launched Dark Depths’ career as a combo powerhouse – one so strong that it was preemptively banned at the creation of the Modern format. But Dark Depths remained legal in older Constructed formats like Legacy and Vintage, where it was massively enhanced by the tutor power of Crop Rotation. Armed with this combination of instant combo and utility land toolbox, Dark Depths has become a stable pillar of the eternal metagame – and an often underappreciated Commander thre

MTG Keywords Explained: Fortify
Future Sight produced a lot of one-off mechanics, but you never know when one could crop up in Magic again. Today, we'll be taking a look at fortify, which allows you to equip your lands! What is Fortify? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwLDGsn3Oqw The fortify mechanic will be familiar with you if you're played with Darksteel Garrison. It's basically equip, but for lands instead of creatures, and works the same way. When you cast Darksteel Garrison, it enters the battlefield unattached, and you can pay the fortify cost (at sorcery speed, so during your main phase with an empty stack) to attach it to any land you control. That land then gets the ability granted by the fortification. We haven't seen any other form of "land Equipment" in Magic yet, but this is a mechanic to keep an eye on if you love either card type. Breaking the Singleton Rule in Commander
1643126400Scott Cullen
Breaking the Singleton Rule in Commander
There are many features that define Commander as a format – from the social aspects to the power level discussions and the commanders themselves. Perhaps the most outstanding quality Commander has is that it’s a singleton format – though there are some cards and decks that ignore this completely. There are few cards in Magic that state “A deck can contain any number of cards named X” – and that makes them all the more memorable and unique. These cards each do something different, and they provide a novelty that some players find intriguing and exciting. They tend to be relatively low in terms of power level, but that hasn’t stopped countless players from brewing around them to great success! I’m going to cover each one of these cards today, and discuss the supports that can help you get the most from them. I’ll also discuss some cards that will benefit each of them individually, as well as suggestions for synergistic or interesting commanders for each one! Mutual Benefits At face value, cards like Persistent Petitioners or Relentless Rats are relatively low-impact; on their own, they don’t provide much value. These decks need to have an abundance of card advantage and mana to keep up with the table, so be generous with your card draw and ramp spells when you’re building a deck around one of these cards! Some cards can be used in any of these decks, no matter which rule-breaking card you choose to play with. A lot of cards I covered in my article on tribal cards for Commander fall into this category, but there are a few unique ones that most other decks won’t usually use. Cloud Key reduces the cost of a specific card type, so you can cast more copies of Dragon’s Approach or Rat Colony in a turn. If your deck has black in its color identity, Secret Salvage can be a great way to fill your hand with additional copies of your key piece. Finally, Thrumming Stone is one of the most explosive cards you can add. If you’re lucky, you can chain several copies of Persistent Petitioners together for one huge turn! Dragon's Approach This Strixhaven burn spell is the most recent of the rule breakers, and easily the most unique. Not only is it the first noncreature spell to be playable in multiples, but it’s the first to use the graveyard as well. Many players want to make something unique with this card, and despite each build having roughly 25 cards in common, they’ve succeeded! Virtually every Dragon’s Approach deck is a blast to play against. One great thing about Dragon’s Approach is that it’s finally made Pyromancer Ascension relevant in Commander. Once you cast a couple of Dragon’s Approach with this enchantment on board, you’ll be hitting opponents for six damage for each one you cast! It also helps to insulate against counterspells, as opponents will have to counter both copies to prevent you from getting the search effect.  Locket of Yesterdays greatly reduces the cost of D

Following Your Heart in Commander: Liesa, Forgotten Archangel
1643040000Kristen Gregory
Following Your Heart in Commander: Liesa, Forgotten Archangel
Kristen takes us on a deck building journey that started with Saskia the Unyielding and ended up with a completely different commander: Liesa, Forgotten Archangel.  Sometimes when you sit down to build a deck, it’s a straightforward process. You pick a commander that resonates with you, and the deck just builds itself. It’s smooth like butter, and before you know it, it’s time to take it for a playtest. Indeed, it’s gotten a lot easier to build decks with newer commanders, which tend to be aimed at a specific niche or archetype.  Signpost Commanders While some people dislike how some new-era commanders “solve” deck archetypes and present a clear best-in-slot option to lead a deck, they also provide a lot of benefits. They help people to brew quickly, especially players who are less invested in Commander as a whole. Much like how “signpost uncommons” are designed to help rookie drafters find a lane, “signpost commanders” offer a straightforward IKEA-style deck building plan. They’ll help you make use of underplayed cards in your collection and assemble something with a little less excruciating heart-and-soul brewing. Sometimes, there just isn’t the time to reinvent the wheel.  While I could write an entire article on signpost commanders – and I just might – I’ll give a brief definition before moving on. Signpost Commander: 1. A commander that rewards you with mana and/or card advantage for taking game actions you would otherwise take within your strategy; 2. A commander that “solves” an archetype and provides a laser-focused building experience Saskia Angel Storm My deck building journey began with Saskia and Bolas’s Citadel. A lot of my friends have been brewing with these cards – often in the same deck – and I was inspired to try making a four-color Angels deck, with Bolas’s Citadel as a way to storm through the deck. When your commander gives you neither card advantage nor mana advantage in the command zone, it can lead to unbalanced pods. Angels as a tribe lack a powerful signpost commander, and it’s one of the things holding them back from jamming with other focused builds, especially as their average mana value is on the high end. While my solution worked on paper – using Divining Top and other expected effects to filter out lands from the top of the library, and using lifegain synergies to avoid dying to the Citadel – in practice, it just wasn’t v i b i n g with me.  A moodboard from my time brewing Saskia Angels Part of it, I think, was that the deck suffered in similar ways to how mono-white decks suffer in EDH. Jamming so much ramp and card draw into the deck on unitasker creatures outside of the tribe ended up diluting the deck too far. Plus, being in four colors with Saskia at the head of the deck created a dynamic I didn’t enjoy at the table. It was treated like a four-color deck despite not having the usual payoffs – like the best format sta

Modern Tier List: January 2022

Modern Tier List: January 2022
Welcome back for the January 2022 edition of Modern Tier List! Over the last month, we’ve seen three decks really separate themselves from the field, making for a much smaller A Tier than we’re used to. That means that several of the heavy hitters are getting relegated to B Tier this month, while some combo decks are starting to fight their way up the ranks. Before we dive into the list, here’s a quick refresher on the tier list grading criteria: S Tier: Decks that are above the rest. This is normally the default “best deck in the format” and the deck(s) you should have in mind when building or picking your deck. A Tier: Decks that are great. These decks are knocking on the door of S Tier, but they may have a small weakness that keeps them out of the upper echelon. B Tier: Good, solid decks. You wouldn’t be surprised if a B Tier deck takes down an event, but they have bigger weaknesses or liabilities than the decks in A Tier. C Tier: Decks that are totally fine, but not notable. These decks aren’t exactly tearing up the tournament or ladder scene, but you should expect to face them every now and then. D Tier: Decks with strong elements, but that generally aren’t great choices compared to the rest of the format.  Modern has had plenty of S tier de Modern has had plenty of S-Tier decks in the past, but I don’t currently believe that is the case. Modern is fairly open as far as what decks are competitive, and as such, we don’t have anything in S Tier this time. Similarly, I don’t believe that there are any decks currently in D Tier; most Modern decks are cohesive enough that they land in C Tier. If you want to see how I ranked things last month, you can find that here.  This is the smallest group of A Tier decks that we’ve seen in a while. Grixis Death’s Shadow, Hammer Time and Four-Color Yorion have separated themselves from the pack over the last month. A tempo deck, an aggro-combo deck, and a value midrange deck making up the A Tier is a sign of a balanced and healthy metagame.  All three of the A Tier decks are well-established at this point, so this week, I’m going to focus on decks that have seen recent movement. If you’d like more information on any of these decks, you can check out our deck guides below: Grixis Death’s Shadow Hammer Time Four-Color Yorion This month, we saw a handful of decks fall from A Tier into B Tier, most notably Izzet Murktide, Amulet Titan, and Temur Footfalls. Those decks are still solid options, but they haven’t put up the same results as the A Tier decks recently and aren’t positioned quite as well.  Izzet Murktide While Izzet Murktide is still a strong contender in any Modern tournament, it’s simply outclassed by Grixis Death’s Shadow at the moment. Both decks occupy a similar space as disruptive tempo decks, but subpar Hammer Time and Four-Color Yorion match-ups continue to be thorns in Murktide’s side. That bei

The Watchtower 03/01/21 – Core Values

They’re generally unthemed and use more basic cards and abilities compared to regular sets, and contain a bunch of reprints. Wizards tried to do away with them back in 2015 with Magic Origins supposed … Continue reading The Watchtower 03/01/21 – Core Values →

Deck Guide: Izzet Tempo/Control in Standard
This Izzet deck went into a hiatus after the last Standard rotation and a sort of full obscurity, but now it’s back. Is it strong, though? Absolutely! While the deck runs a lot of control elements, it's also full of extraordinary creatures. Most players call it a tempo deck, but I’d much rather classify it as a control deck seeing how we’re running a pretty steep curve with [card]Goldspan Dragon[/card] and such. Whatever the terminology, the deck is fantastic. The post Deck Guide: Izzet Tempo/Control in Standard appeared first on Draftsim.

The rules are already equipped to handle things using a negative mana value to do other things, largely by doing nothing or something functionally identical to nothing. Drawing -2 cards would mean drawing no cards & a token created with negative toughness would be put in its owners’ graveyard and cease to exist as a state-based ability. A negative mana value itself wouldn’t exactly be elegant (“This spell’s mana value is -2” as negative mana costs can’t exist) but the rules are equipped enough.

The issue isn’t can the rules handle it, but can the average player handle how the rules handle it.

I have a question and some feedback both about the podcast. In much older episodes of the podcast (I’m at #373-Perspective specifically) you mentioned you don’t get much feedback on the podcast. Is this still the case? Or do more people let you know now what they do or don’t like to hear on the podcast? I also just wanted to say I loved the Templating episode from this past week. I’d love if Matt wanted to do more podcasts on the subject!

I think the rules mostly handle negative numbers well. Draw -2 cards would equal draw 0 cards (rule 107.1b), and a -2/-2 token would simply die to state-based actions due to having toughness less than or equal to 0.

“Can the rules handle it?” and “Can the rules handle it in a way that’s grokable to the majority of the audience?” are not the same thing.
