The Tags Glossary

Welcome to the BBCode Tag Glossary. This thread covers all of our bbcodes, their usage, and features. It covers the normal, basic formatting tags that everyday users should know, as well as the more advanced tags and parameters for more savvy user needs.

Our BBCodes are designed so that anyone not familiar with the bbcode concept should be able to easily learn and use them hassle free, while allowing the more advanced user to have strong control over the look and feel of their posts. If you are new to BBCode, I recommend looking at the Basic Formatting Tags to see how the basic functions are done, and return only after you're familiar with their use and concepts.

This guide is divided into three sections:

Basic Formatting Tags
The basic formatting tags are the simpliest, easiest, and most widely used BBCode tags there are. They cover basic text formatting, such as bold, italic, and underline.

Slightly More Complex Tags
Once you are familiar with the basic tags, there are slightly more complex tags that you should familiarize yourself with. These allow you to do such things as control alignment, change the font style, wrap information in a "click to see" spoiler, and embed youtube videos.

Advanced Tag Parameters
Advanced tag parameters are not for the novice user. Once you are accustom to using BBCode, they can allow you to better customize and control your post. They build on the existing BBCodes to allow more personalization and advanced styling.

Basic Formatting Tags

The basic formatting tags are an every-day use feature that allow the basic controls over your post's text. These add the essential styles to control your text, such as Bold, Italic, and Underline. Some of these have more advanced features, but we won't go into those just yet.

The following table lists each basic bbcode tag, it's usage, and its result.

ControlTagExample UsageResult
Bold Text[b][b]Text[/b]Text
Italic Text[i][i]Text[/i]Text
Underline[u][u]Text[/u]Text

Slightly More Complex Tags

Some of the slightly-more complex bbcodes are still used in an everyday post setting. These tags allow you to do things such as quote another user without using the quote button, hide information that you don't want spoil unless a user clicks to see it, or even show information that only logged-in users can see.

The following table lists all bbcode tags that are not on the above, as well as a few that have more options. Each tag links to a section below that covers the everything in depth.

Advanced Tag Parameter List

For the advanced user, we have a plethora of parameters to help control the look and style of your post. These parameters give you a great deal of control over the element they apply to, so that your vision can hopefully be realized how you want. This are especially helpful to those writing primers, in-depth analysis, or complex write-ups.

The following table lists all extensible bbcode tags, linking to a section below that covers every parameter for that tag, as well as its use.

Advanced Tag Parameters Explained

Many of our tags are highly extensible and controllable with additional parameters. These allow you to use advanced formatting techniques for more control over the look and feel of your post. While these are not necessary for your average post, they can be very useful to those writing primers, in-depth analysis, or complex write-ups. The format of these parameters always take the form of: [tag parameter="value"]

All parameters listed here are optional, and most come with a default value. This allows the average user to ignore the advanced parameter system entirely for quick, easy use. It also allows you to skip parameters that don't want to change.

Below is a list of every tag with extensible parameters. Each tag lists it's parameters, their meaning, their acceptable values, and their default values. If you feel a parameter is not too narrow, or feel that a new parameter is needed to fit your use, please PM me for possible adjustments.

HeightForce the Image to a specific height10 - 150150
CornersGive the image rounded cornersA number (in pixels)8
ShadowGive the image a drop shadow0 - 200

The [ARTCROP] tag easily allows you to add small versions of card art to your post. You can adjust the size downward from it's normal 205x150, change the border radius (to better match the new size), and also give the image a box shadow.

Code: Select all

[artcrop width=102 height=75 corners=4 shadow=2]Trustworthy Scout[/artcrop]

CornersCorner border radius0 - 2008
MarginOuter margin in pixelsAny size units (px, em, %)Auto
ShadowGive the box a drop shadow0 - 200

The Box tag creates a container box around its contents, and is very useful for sidebars, glossaries, or clear sectional content. You can give your box a header, a drop shadow, and control it's width, border thickness, background color, inner padding, outer margin, and corner roundness.

Code: Select all

[box header="Hello World" width=200px border=2 bg=#FFF padding=8 corners=16 margin=6 shadow=4]Hello Everyone![/box]

The Cardbox tag is a shorthand combination of Box and Cards. Styling has been adjusted so that the card list will better flow into the box.

The [CARDIMG] tag easily allows you to use our card images in your post. However, our standard size is not always ideal for every use. As such, you can adjust the size, border radius (to better match the new size), and also give the image a box shadow.

Price and Ratings can also be shown below the card if you specify the appropriate parameter. Note, however, that some cards won't have pricing data (new cards, mtgo only, etc), and some won't have ratings (no one has voted on it for the format yet). In these cases, the appropriate area will simply be left blank.

The deck tag is one of the nuts and bolts of our Magic Community, and customizing the look helps build your post or primer's style. The inner workings of the deck are uniform, but the styling is up for customization.

Ordering of "fixed", the default, keeps the ordering of card sections as you put them in, wrapping them into columns that fit the width of the post. The ordering of "auto" will dynamically reorder the card sections in order to best fit the deck container evenly.

PaddingThe inner padding of the float elementSize(s) in px/emLeft/Right:

0 20px 10px 4px
The float tag allows you to float an element to the left or right of your post. There are times where you need to better control the space around the floating element, however, so both margin and padding are controllable. Note that both can have one, two, or four sizes. One size will apply to all four sides of the element, two sizes will be for top/bottom and left/right combinations, and four sizes will independently control top, right, bottom, and left sizes (in that order).

The [IMAGE] tag should not be confused with the [IMG] tag. The [IMG] tag is built into our software with back-end controls, while the [IMAGE] tag is custom built and extensible for control. This allows you to give your image a title, control its exact size, give it a drop shadow, and round off the image's corners (which is great for some card images).

The [RATE] offers a quick way to show a 0-5 rating, in the same way that our card ratings are shown. The sizing of the rating is directly proportionate to the font size, and can be controlled as such.

Header Styles

There are four main header styles: Fade, Glossy, Solid, and Textured. Fade is the default value. Each of this highlight the header in a different way, and you can control the base color with the appropriate parameter.

There are also quite a few color-specific designs that illustrate a color or concept. Unlike the main four, these marquee options will override any base color you set and will always have the colors shown.
