Seriously, Dirk. @RxPhantom appears to be one step away from spinning a sign about Commandfest Richmond in some sort of scanty bathing suit on a street corner. Don't let it come to that.

Lol, if I was anywhere in the US I'd probably do it, but NZ is a bit far of a trip, even for magic.

I'm stuck west of the Mighty Mississippi for the foreseeable future, unfortunately. Unless one of you knows someone looking to hire a former special education teacher with great written communication skills and decent design sensibilities…

@RxPhantom ha! Thanks for that. This is probably not the place for me to air my grievances about the education system though. Looking to get out of that world and into something new.

Random stupid gripe - I hate it when WotC groups together niche things with popular things in an obvious ploy to raise appeal for a card.

Case in point: Mari, the Killing Quill. Assassins? Mercenaries? Obscure semi-tribal types with little support, mostly from older sets. That's neat to throw them a bone.

But oh no, if we just did those two types most people wouldn't have an interest in the card, so instead lets just casually throw ROGUES into the mix, a type with 3x as many creatures as assassins and mercenaries combined, because everyone and their mother has a stupid rogues deck, so now the cool niche card has mass appeal. And then anyone who thought it might be cool to build a mercenary deck with crappy old mercadia mercenaries now has to justify not including the plethora of stronger rogues that have been printed in every set ever.

Dumb.

Oooooooh, was someone tempted to build an obscure tribal deck?

@DirkGently I say you build the merc tribal anyway. Mercenaries are bad in mtg. Your playgroup can beat mercenaries. They don't even have a Lin Sivvi to break them.
There's no biscuits and gravy in New Zealand.

See I have the opposite gripe, when they don't put the obvious thing in it niggles at me.

That is to say, Kaladesh should have had Rebels and Rocco should interact with Food tokens. Prove me wrong.

Lol I wasn't actually planning to build merc tribal (even if Mari wasn't ruined), I just think it's annoying. I did pull a Mari from a random prize pack or something so it's sitting on my pile of cards. If something could coax me into doing a tribal deck it'd probably be something old and janky like mercs, but I don't think I actually have the merc set in my collection. Not exactly a well-supported strategy.

I did also find it annoying that for a while there, every boros equipment commander also gave synergy to auras, but there isn't an obviously better-supported "tribe" between those things. Still annoying that they kinda dilute the synergy to have broader appeal. Doing it once as a wacky "try combining these things", fine, but there were a ton of them amongst red and white. And now the modified thing kinda expands it even more.

I do think they're way too hesitant to use the Rebel type. Lin Sivvi is over here dying of thirst.

To be fair, I'm somewhat saddened by the lack of unplayable garbage cards. I much prefer killing people with Eater of Days than I do Craterhoof Behemoth. By garbage I mean, hilariously terrible not snoozefest draft chaff vanilla creatures.

I don't think Beamtown is what materpillar wants either. The bullies don't give you any reason to play the cards, they force your opponent to play with them. All you get to do is include them in the deck and give 'em away. It's more like the doldrums of being a mailman vs the ecstasy of being the recipient of (nonadvert, nonbill) mail.

I was just kidding - it's just a funny coincidence that the card he mentioned has suddenly become significantly more playable with the most recent commander release, albeit not in the way it was originally intended.

WHAT
Well, 2-0, not exactly a longstanding record. But yeah, I'd hoped it would be so awful that I'd have to get really lucky to win. Either I overestimated my opponents or I'm just really lucky. In fairness my opponent did give me a Pendant of Prosperity - needless to say, a lot of prosperity was had. However he did not smell the Inkmoth Nexus + Kessig Wolf Run I was cooking...I don't reuse wincons very often, but that combination is probably one of the plays I've mostly frequently used to kill people in the time I've played. I remember doing that to folks way back in 2013 or so. Good times.

@DirkGently How have they not figured out never to give you anything at this point? I swear you're playing in the Twilight Zone or something.

Rod Serling: "This is DirkGently, true age unknown, prominent member of the online forum MTGNexus. For years he's been seeking the ultimate challenge, pursuing victory with the highest stakes against the most infintismal of odds. Today he's going to play against a new playgroup, a group where even 99 lands can flip a table... A playgroup just a short drive down the street into The Twilight Zone."

Damn, your group is truly awful! Are they legally blind, or what....?

I suggest you try a 99 land deck with The Prismatic Piper as your general, to really give them any chance of success! Lol

Lol, if he could be 5c it might have been good enough. Garth only cast 3 spells all game (regrowth for tilapia west [autocorrect but it's too good to fix], disenchant a Soul Snare to clear the path for my kill, and terror some rando angel that kept smacking me).

I said the names of the lands I played and kept them both clearly visible, separated from my other lands. I think I may have said a brief blurb about what they do as I played them. I never know how obvious it's sporting to be - I don't wanna effectively sucker punch someone considering they aren't super familiar with the cards, but I don't think I should need to lay out my whole plan before I do it.

However he did not smell the Inkmoth Nexus + Kessig Wolf Run I was cooking...
Damn, your group is truly awful! Are they legally blind, or what....?

I suggest you try a 99 land deck with The Prismatic Piper as your general, to really give them any chance of success! Lol
Prismatic Piper is too strong. Dirk is going to have to pick a basic land and sharpie "can be your commander" on it AND cut inkmoth/Wolf Run from his deck in order to lose.

I don't think I should need to lay out my whole plan before I do it.
Well, I agree with you on the principle, but with these guys, I think that your "guidance" is probably still needed in some way....🙄

Well, my 99 land deck is undefeated so far.

We have to go even stupider...

Pretty sure you're going to smash these guys even with a 99 land deck.
I mean, I told you so. What madness possessed you to play any winconditions outside of a Garth created Shivan Dragon? You're really really really bad at not optimizing your deckbuilding.

I was just kidding - it's just a funny coincidence that the card he mentioned has suddenly become significantly more playable with the most recent commander release, albeit not in the way it was originally intended.
Wow that bullies looks awful to play against. Tap: kill target player with Phage the Untouchable. Fuuuuuun.

Yeah, I prefer the Torpor Orb into hardcast Eater of Days line.

Luckily Wizards at least thought of that and made sure you can't reanimate Legendary creatures so Phage is out. Still, not the most fun commander to play against and it seems like it wouldn't even be that fun to pilot either.

Tell your group that I hate them.
