I've never done a hard theme vorthos deck. Figured I'd throw together one based on my favorite anime.

I'm planning on doing 3 cards per character, representing the beginning, middle and end of their story arcs / part of the story. I'm also planning on making cards for massive plot points.

Here's the link to all the alt-arts for the cards

Does your playgroup allow for "outside the game" concepts for Fae of Wishes // Granted, Wish, Burning Wish?

Have you thought about doing custom proxies for each card? So you can use an online website to make up the cards with your characters and they have the "alternative names" frames like you see with Lord of the Ring cards and others.
I've done it myself so if you are interested I can step you though the process.

My playgroup is pretty chill. I'd be very surprised if they didn't let me rule 0 the wish cards. I'm planning on doing custom proxies for every card with photoshop. I just started dabbling this past week. My plan is to do as few alternate names as possible just to keep the cards more understandable. I'll post all the images here once I'm finished.

Here's the first few I've done. They might get edited some more but this is kinda the look I'm going for. I took a bunch of screenshots from the anime but they don't frame quite as well. I might use a different template, I'm not positive.

I'm having trouble thinking of what cards Mami should have to represent episodes 1&2. Did you have any ideas? I was thinking maybe Mentor of the Meek and Kogla, the Titan Ape because she is a mentor figure and does a lot of fighting. But, I feel like I can do better at the same time.

Unfortunately I have not watched the anime, so can't help with personality matchups.

Just from what I read on the fandom wiki it sounds like protection (for others) is the most likely of mtg mechanics she would have.
Mother of Runes, Eight-and-a-Half-Tails.

I noticed that she summons guns, so I'm thinking creatures that search for equipment.
Stoneforge Mystic seems the best as you can then tap to "pull those weapons out".
It says she has several weapons in her arsenal so you could play some equipment that represents them.
I'm not to sure what going to best represent her weapons but Umezawa's Jitte using the -1/-1 sort of like firing a rifle (you know shooting at a distance).
Assimilation Aegis could represent a one-use of a weapon -or- restraint magic.
Sword of Truth and Justice "helping" other creatures with buffs.
Anyway if you like this idea, more thought could be put into equipment that represent her arsenal.

The other thing I read was about her transformation into Holy Mami. I was thinking literally transform cards.
Kytheon, Hero of Akros is one. The transformed side does give other creatures indestructible for a turn.
The other one is Urza, Lord Protector (it has protector in the name!) and meld with The Mightstone and Weakstone.
Urza, Planeswalker would be her "Holy Mami" form and The Mightstone and Weakstone could represent her soul gem.
That's kind of nice that you have to wait for both of them, as story wise her transformation wouldn't happen until further into a game.

I'm always on the hunt for recommended animes so watched it and was awesome! I watched the tv series (12 episodes) and the Rebellion movie.

Just going to throw some ideas out there. If your playgroup is already malleable to rule 0 ideas then "plane" cards would be a cool way to represent the witches realms (labyrinths).
Now the concept of planes are stupidly powerful, so the idea would be to select ones that are not obnoxious so that your playgroup will be okay. You need a minimum of 10.

If you don't like this idea or your playgroup doesn't go with it, then I was thinking "Battles" are the next best idea for labyrinths. You know that's where the battles take place. The transformed sides could represent the witches. It doesn't make sense that you "defeat" a battle and then the witch appears. But I'd just imagine it that you get the witches grief seed powers at your disposal represented by the witch.

I was thinking that Sinister Concierge would be a nice fit for Homura Akemi resetting with time counters as this just keeps looping. You could say this is her "beginning" card, which fits in with the paradox of time travel.

Maybe Kyubey could be represented by Garth One-Eye with granting a "wish" each time?

Glad you liked it! It's literally my favorite. I'd also recommend Baccano and SpyxFamily as fantastic animes. They're wildly different but awesome.

They're malleable but I don't think they're quite that malleable.

Huh. I'll poke through the battles some later. I hadn't thought up a good card to represent a Grief Seed yet.

I was going with Liliana Vess for the looping aspect. Since she's a time traveler she's not a creature anymore. The -2 as a search feels on theme as does the ultimate of resurrecting everyone.
I was leaning towards her beginning card being timeless witness because of the name, remembering the past and coming back stronger.
Maybe Kyubey could be represented by Garth One-Eye with granting a "wish" each time?
I was going with Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa because he comes in and makes them fairly unkillable.

I'm a little low on card draw and Sunforger targets at the moment. Pretty hyped to post all my alters when I finish them up.

Double post. Mostly to get your attention. I finished up all the non-land cards. Not sure if I'll do the lands there isn't that much good art from the show for them. Curious to know what you think of the cards.

I'm curious to know what all you thought about it? The original series is my favorite anime of all time. I thought Rebellion was good, but I'd have been happier if it was made. Curious to know about the movie coming out later this year though.

Other animes I really like are SpyxFamily, One Punch Man, Baccano, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Mob Psycho 100, Vinland Saga, Ergo Proxy (slow and weird though), Hellsing, and Spice&Wolf.

I'm not a huge fan of double faced cards. I find them a huge logistical pain to flip around in the sleeve so I didn't add any to this deck.

They look incredible!!! That was a trip down memory lane, even though its only been some months since I saw it.

Just some syntax stuff to make sure you don't regret errors after you print them out.
The "diamond" cards are all referencing "charcoal" rather than their own names.
Neyith of the Dire Hunt has an additional comma after the activation cost. If you read through it again you'll see what I mean.
Bloom Tender has the flavor text in a different font to the rest of the cards. Not sure if this is on purpose, but it sticks out to me as looking odd.

The only card I don't like as a choice is Terminate, as it says "It can't be regenerated" and that's exactly what Kyubey does, he regenerates.

Just of note, when you get a place to print these cards, you can't have the official MtG backing, but you get to pick a custom backing. In fact you can choose a different one for each card.

I watched SpyxFamily just recently, That was a lot of fun, and a change up from sad animes and demon fighting.
I'm currently watching Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.

Yeah, that is A LOT of work trying to find art that would suite each land by flavor. Not even sure if that would be possible, you'd have to spend months trying to come up with stuff.

Just as an alternative idea, what I did with my Islands for my Myra deck was to make a collage of them to make a panoramic view. The idea is that as I'm playing the game and I get certain Islands I place them together to start making the complete picture.

So this is the panoramic full art.

And then I divided it up into 8 different Islands.

Image Image .. etc
What you could do to save time, while also getting the full experience you want, is to pick some of your favorite art and then you can divide up lands to make a collage of them.
Let's just say you pick one picture for all the lands. So you divide that picture up into a 6x6 grid (or whatever orientation your pic is). That's 36 land so you have 2 left over.
The cards on their own will look kind of abstract, but you'll have a lot of fun knowing how each fits together and the color palette and look is going to be cohesive. Because its such a big picture, you wouldn't be able to place them together while you are playing, but its the sort of thing where if you go to your local game store and can lay them all out on the table, people will go "oh that's cool" when they see the whole thing.

Thanks for pointing those out. I've fixed them.

Huh... you're correct. I don't know what card to replace it with though. That's one of the three sunforger targets in the deck, so I need to swap it for a red/white instant. I'm not sure what fits with the art of Kyubey getting blown away.

I was looking through scryfall for a replacement when I saw Hero's Downfall. Can't believe I missed that one. So I've added that to the deck too. I'll probably end up making a Maze of Ith just because I like that card.

I hadn't linked the back I was planning on using
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... drive_link

That panoramic art idea is pretty cool. I'm trying to make proxies for my other decks, so I'll probably not get around to something that involved but I'll keep it in mind.

Yeah its tricky, the only Sunforger cards I thought the names were good are Kill Shot or Rebuke. But the "attacking creature" doesn't fit that well for Kyubey actions. Although he is passive-aggressive personified. I'm probably overthinking things for you.

I got a couple of games in a few weeks ago and I'm extremely happy with how the power level of this deck landed. It's pretty squarely in precon territory which is what I was hoping for. It's got a fair amount of removal and card advantage but can't really close out the game without just turning magical girls sideways.

One game I got to Body Double Kaervek the Merciless and then give him indestructible with Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa and life with Shadowspear. That was extremely solid but turned me into the archenemy and beat stick of the table. Cyclonic Rift into Recurring Insight draws a lot of cards.

Another game I played Urabrask, Heretic Praetor which made the newer players absolutely lose their minds. It basically didn't do much but draw me an extra card but they went craaaaazy. Anyway, I survived long enough to stick Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and just let it carry me to victory.

I will say, the art chosen for pretty much every proxy is an excellent representation of the rules text on the card. I know nothing about the source material, but the scenes chosen for each card match the printed text better than pretty much every secret lair and reskin that WotC has done with any outside IP that is even close to the anime genre. Great job on those.

It's funny for me whenever I hear people discuss "what would your dream UB look like"? Since, I've made it myself.

Glad you really like it! Also, the anime is 10/10. Seriously go watch it, I think it's on Netflix. It's only 12 episodes.
