anyway it has the same cost and theme as Moraug, Fury of Akoum but I bet I can guess who gets used more

Anyway pretty nutty card with the right support, but not as crazy as I initially thought it was.

obligatory "eww UB"...though if it wasn't marked UB I honestly wouldn't have noticed.

Thursday, May 16th 2024; Vault 101: Birthday Party

In theory it's a fair bit of tempo over three turns, but it's slow and has a ton of deckbuilding and setup cost to really pay you off, plus it's pretty telegraphed. And sagas are unlikely to synergize with the rest of your deck if you're doing some sort of voltron thing, which is what this seems to encourage. So very niche at best imo.

Autoattaching equipment effects are strong but always wind up more awkward than people think. Like it takes a board state to line up. Deferring it a turn with the saga is kind of helpful in that respect but the timing still requires you to have a dude out first or be happy attaching to the token.

Overall seems like a cool fairly fun card that probably winds up a lot worse than it sounds. Getting from the bin is nice..

In my Xavier Sal, Infested Captain deck, I bounce sagas back and forth between chapters. Creating an extra body to sac and having two chapters with the same good effect is always incredible for him. I feel like that deck has a lot of mill, too. Alas, he cannot use this card, so I just get to ponder what could be. Maybe curses...

I think Vault 101 is pretty weak. Equipping things is often an as-needed or on-demand sort of thing, and the timing on this card isn't great. At least it gives you the good grace to put a human out to equip something to, rather than needing you to table this and a creature to realize the full benefit.

Obviously, there are niche cases where it's really good, like Argentum Armor where you cheat some truly enormous costs, but I feel like these are magic xmas land scenarios with cards that are borderline unplayable.

Idk, I'd jam it into Kellan I think. Seems fine to get my stupid Megaton Hammer onto something of I don't have Puresteel ready. I think people are confusing niche with bad as the two while they may share similarities, are in fact not the same.

Vault 101: Birthday Party looks fine but underwhelming. The floor is pretty bad - a 1/1 and a food token for four mana. The ceiling is pretty high though - recurring two expensive auras or equipments from your graveyard for free is pretty good, and getting a discount on something from hand isn't bad either. I would say my primary concern is the fail rate - how often do you have multiple pieces of equipment in your graveyard? White isn't exactly known for its Entomb effects... and if you are dumping a bunch of stuff in your graveyard to reanimate, you're probably more interested in Dance of the Manse, Open the Vaults, or some other form of mass reanimation.

I could see it in Dogmeat, Ever Loyal, and there are other enablers like Goblin Engineer and equipment-to-hand tutors like Kellan, the Fae-Blooded // Birthright Boon. I don't think I would run it without a lot of expensive equipment and some self-mill though.

Not actually a broken card, Brainstorm and Ponder are broken cards and Dreadhorde just exacerbated it.

Outside of Legacy and Vintage, I actually think it's pretty cool.

I always think this card is going to be awesome but then it never lines up. I think I'd only want to run it if your commander actively provides pump, because I'm always missing a piece.

Even in Xenagos, God of Revels the pump to 2 was not reliable enough and my build runs *tons* of <3cmc instants/sorceries. The magical christmas of hitting Farseek was just not good enough :D

I think Dreadhorde Arcanist is pretty much only for equipment decks. You can get a cheeky Sword to Plowshares or similar without any help, but I think there's room for it to be better. Honourable mention for Glamdring and Runechanter's Pike.

Idk, it's been pretty solid out of Torbran with a Gauntlet of Might. Reasonable flashback of a Searing Blood almost akin to a second copy of Sword of Once and Future. Ironically the sword actually enhances the guy, but the guy is cool to just cast another bolt or chain lightning honestly.

Dreadhorde Arcanist is a sweet card. It's a bit tricky to make work in EDH because most decks don't run a large number of one mana spells. It is possible to pack your deck with Ponder / Brainstorm / Preordain / Lightning Bolt... but you're never going to reach the density you can in Legacy (and the card quality once you get out of the top 10 or so will also drop significantly). That said, I do like the idea of it in decks like Narset, Enlightened Exile that can pump it - if you can get it up to 3+ power, the ability to flash back more expensive stuff (and trigger prowess again) is quite nice.

I'm not sure if it beats other recursive options in a vacuum, but it is cheap - two mana for a card that lets you cast stuff for free is pretty nuts. Wildfire Devils and Mysterious Stranger are two similar options I'll call out, but they're pretty inconsistent.
