Maestros Ascendancy

Pretty excited to find a card to cut in Kess for Kess-cendancy.
Pretty excited to keep Bitterblossom and Dreadhorde Invasion in that deck.

Most of the preliminary lists I've seen are running stuff like Pitiless Plunderer and Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma to minimize costs.
Sure, but that seems like a lot of work to me. The spellslinger stuff seems SOOOO much more dangerous for anyone with a passing interest in breaking it. Basically all you need to do is play extra turns, and it's way more stack-based and thus harder to interact with.

I think it's a lot easier to accidentally turn Toolbox into something with lots of nondeterministic loops than it is to turn Angelo into turns. If you're planning to double Time Warp, you know what you're doing. Whereas with Toolbox I think a lot of people are gonna run further cost reducers, card draw and ETB creatures "for the synergy" without realizing they're making a machine that recasts Gary.

Gary? Gary seems super hard to use given you're playing 3c, colored pips can't be reduced by your commander so they're bad for you, and recursion will likely drain your mana. What board state are you envisioning here where Gary becomes an easy wincon?

Angelo requires running any extra turn spells to become a problem. Not some huge mana-intensive combo machine that can be easily removed, but any extra turns at all. Like one expropriate will accidentally the game from basically any board state with little opportunity for interaction. I don't see how you can consider this a lesser threat.

Yeah, Omniseer Arbiter is interesting. The shrinking ability slightly annoys me though, given that you'll need to recount your graveyard on every trigger. Yet another 'this works much better on Arena than paper' card.

Cut Your Losses is mildly cute as a double-Traumatize.

Mage's Attendant is very interesting, from a 'give white countermagic' perspective. If you're playing it at sorcery speed, then this is effectively a weak tax effect - your opponents have to keep an extra mana open. But if you have a way to flash it in or flicker it to generate Mana Tithe-ing tokens at instant speed, it can certainly go up in value. Needing to pay to tax is a bummer though. I'm curious to see if this ends up being a recurring mechanic.

I'm glad they allow another color to have more Counterspell options, consider even blue is capable of removing permanents now, and white is the obvious secondary color for counters. I think it'd be fitting to see more white counterspells, even if most of them are the taxing sort, like "Counter target spell unless the spell's controller let you draw two cards/create two treasure," that sort.

I feel like a bunch of decks can take advantage of casuality, specially the lower cost ones. It will be good value.

White uncommons rock. Mage's Attendant as a bunch of etb creatures is really nice. Wish Yorion companion was a thing. Also Rumor Gatherer is sweeet draw in so many strategies.

I think I'll run Elspeth in my Azorious planeswalkers deck but not 100% sure

Heads up: MagicSpoiler killed all hotlinking of images yesterday/today, so make sure you dont [img] from them (you probably shouldn't anyways, but now you can't). Upload or [cardimg] the cards instead. :)

Is it just me or is Evolving Door....kind of bad? Like, you don't even get to put the creature onto the battlefield; you still have to cast it even after sacrificing a creature.

It has too many specific things going on with it. It dreams of being Pod but isn't even Razaketh, the Foulblooded/repeatable Altar of Bone. That's fine, though. Don't give green more tutors.

It makes sense given the constraints. They've been burned by Birthing Pod before, and adding a whole additional sentence about needing to have a mana value of same/one more would have added a ton of words to an already crowded card. So they can't restrict it based on mana value, therefore they need to make you pay for it. It still gives you a theoretical toolbox, just one that takes a very specific type of deck to abuse. With there seeming to be some multicolored tokens around, sacrificing a 1/1 citizen to tutor up Jetmir, Nexus of Revels seems like it could be a neat play.

It's not great, and it's certainly not a staple, but it's hard for a repeatable tutor at less than five mana to be bad.

I think it's pretty solid. The sacrifice can be almost anything since the color requirement is so easy to work with, so it's almost just "1, t, sac a creature: tutor any creature into your hand (castable this turn only)." Repeatable tutoring like that could put together nasty stuff pretty quickly.

Witness Protection is hilarious. Reminds me of the secret agents in Psychonauts.

This set is looking solid, but my love affair with Neon Dynasty is keeping me from getting too excited. I'm hoping for plenty of spicy casualty cards, because my Grixis death trigger deck could use some love.

I like the idea of counter-types matter, because it encourages running a bunch of weird old garbage cards that don't really go anywhere else. On the other hand, stacking a bunch of esoteric counters on tokens seems like a book-keeping nightmare, especially because the tokens aren't the same, and they're garbage tokens so that deck probably wants to move the counters off them anyways, in varying amounts and directions.

Of course, Exotic Pets is probably unplayable anyways, so this whole thing is really just an intellectual exercise.

Exotic pets has to be the first 3cmc card that creates multiple unblockable bodies, isn't it? Seems at least relevant for derevi or other saboteur commanders. Plus it's an instant and can make them bigger etc. seems pretty bananas for limited at least.

Luxior, Giada's Gift looks.... very interesting. It can serve as soft protection for a planeswalker you want to get to an ultimate (assuming your opponents have attackers and not removal), or you can just double the effectiveness of +1/+1 counters. It's also fetchable by Trinket Mage.

Hostile Takeover seems worth consideration. I usually don't run damage-based sweepers because they tend to miss killing the larger creatures I really want to die... but guaranteeing I can still kill at least one big creature while saving one of my small creatures? Could be interesting.

Black Market Tycoon I guess functions as a janky Sylvan Caryatid in its ability to generate any color of mana. Banking mana across turns can certainly be relevant, even if it does cost some life.

Population Control is a Shatter the Sky variant for decks that want it. Probably slightly better?

Attractive Outlaw isn't good, but it is fixing for a color combination that usually lacks it. Definitely feels like a cycle though. I do like the design space.
