I love the name and artwork for Sheoldred, the Apocalypse; it's imposing and grand, much like Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite. The mana cost and abilities are a bit of a let down though. The 'Apocalypse' is opponents losing nibbles of life when they draw cards? That enormous centipedal body is only a 4/5? It's a good card but the disconnect between its flavour and mechanics is a bit jarring.

Regarding set power level, I'll be fine if it's on the lower side. Have just finished retooling me deck roster, so am happy to not need to modify things for a while. Looks like they'll manage to bring interesting new effects without printing staples, which I think is a pretty good place to be.

A possible leak happened apparently the same way it happened before the last Dom set (via release notes posted by accident or something I think link to back up ) so i will put this in spoiler tags along with actual new stuff and not returning stuff since I'm not sure, . My own comments will be in each spoiler and be in ()

This set introduces stun counters, a new way to prevent tapped permanents from untapping.

Instant
Kicker {1}{U} (You may pay an additional {1}{U} as
you cast this spell.)
Tap up to two target creatures. If this spell was kicked,
put a stun counter on each of those creatures. (If a
permanent with a stun counter would become untapped,
remove one from it instead.)
Draw a card.
• If a tapped permanent with a stun counter on it would become untapped, a stun counter will be removed
from it instead. This is a replacement effect. (oh joy another counter on a card)

more about the counters:
If a tapped permanent with a stun counter on it would become untapped, a stun counter will be removed
from it instead. This is a replacement effect.
• Stun counters replace untapping for any reason, including players untapping tapped permanents during
their untap steps.
• If a permanent has more than one stun counter on it, only one will be removed each time it would become
untapped.
• Abilities that trigger when a permanent "becomes untapped" won't trigger if a stun counter is removed
instead.
• If untapping a permanent is part of a cost (such as that of Halo Fountain's first ability), you may pay that
cost by "untapping" a tapped permanent with a stun counter on it. The stun counter will be removed and the
creature will remain tapped. However, the cost will still be paid.
• On the other hand, if untapping multiple permanents is part of a cost (such as that of Halo Fountain's last
two abilities), you can't "untap" the same permanent more than once to pay that cost.
• Stun counters exist independently of the effects that created them. If a permanent has no stun counters on it,
it will untap as normal.
• Stun counters are not keyword counters, and they don't cause the permanents they're on to gain any
abilities. They won't be affected by effects that cause permanents to lose all abilities

• Powerstone tokens are a new kind of predefined token. Each one has the artifact subtype "Powerstone" and
the ability "{T}: Add {C}. This mana can't be spent to cast a nonartifact spell."
• You can use the {C} added by a Powerstone token on anything that isn't a nonartifact spell. This includes
paying costs to activate abilities of both artifact and nonartifact permanents, paying ward costs, and so on.
• Although all the cards in the Dominaria United set that create Powerstone tokens create a tapped
Powerstone token, entering the battlefield tapped isn't part of the token's definition. Notably, if you create
a token that is a copy of a Powerstone token, the token copy won't enter the battlefield tapped.

The Defilers are a cycle of five Phyrexian creatures, one in each of the five colors. Each Defiler has three abilities: a

• You may only pay the additional cost once per permanent spell.
• Some players may make the mental shortcut that the Defilers effectively turn one of the colored mana
symbols in the spell's cost into a Phyrexian colored mana symbol. Despite the similarity in function, this
ability does not cause the spells to have Phyrexian mana symbols in their costs. Sorry, Rage Extractor!
• The triggered ability will trigger whenever you cast a permanent spell of the appropriate color, no matter
what costs you paid to cast it. That ability will trigger and resolve before the spell that caused it to trigger
resolves. It will resolve even if the spell that caused it to trigger has been countered.

• The cost increase applies to spells that player casts even if they're casting them for an alternative cost. If
they cast a spell without paying its mana cost, they'll still have to pay {2}.
• Abilities that reduce the cost to cast a spell apply after abilities that raise them. For example, if an opponent
chose to draw an additional card as Academy Loremaster's triggered ability resolved, Argivian Phalanx (a

Uh, Hermes_, you already linked to the PDF, you don't have to list every single card on it here.

As an aside, whatever you might think of the power level, I'm loving they're bringing back all these old Legends legendaries with new revamped cards that are more playable. I am pleasantly surprised at some of the names that got a new card.

Welcome back, y'all. ;)

Holy bejeebus, Hermes. Are the occasional notes in the margins yours?

Anyway, my top takeaways:
Unofficial Spoiler Discussion
Damn, wotc really wants to push the legendary tribal thing. Unfortunately I'm not very interested in that. Or the regular tribal stuff (that elf that lets you pay G to draw seems kinda nuts though). Luckily there's a million billion legends so a few of them are more compelling for me.

Having a card that dictates its colors and its color identity is weird space. Can't say I'm a huge fan (I assume it's just to make it a good target for the 5c planeswalker?) but it seems harmless.

Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief is probably my favorite option. Ink-Treader Nephilim and...that red dude whose name I forget...are kind of insanely busted, so its nice to see a much lower ceiling, but similar vibe commander. All those 1 mana targeting cantrips are still pretty slick as a 1 mana draw 2, and I'm sure there's plenty of other shenanigans.

Rivaz of the Claw, despite being tribal, gets me right in my Zirilan of the Claw. Casting stuff from graveyard is cool when it's sufficiently un-broken, so hopefully that's true of this dude. There's gotta be some interesting etb dragons or something to mess around with.

Zar Ojanen, Scion of Efrava gets the "owned by the rules of commander" award. Although it is kinda funny to run junk like Unstable Frontier to try to make it work.

Verrak, Warped Sengir is an interesting new take. I imagine there won't be a ton of variance in how he's built, but it still might be interesting to give it a try. EDIT: oh god, it works with fetchlands. That is so gross. EDIT EDIT: I think a lot of people will build him wrong actually...he doesn't have any native synergy with a card like Doom Whisperer, the sorts of things he synergizes with are cards with significant other costs PLUS a little life payment. Stuff like Bloodsoaked Altar and Forsworn Paladin. Even stuff like Greed is pretty meh since he just saves you a mana per activation. EDIT EDIT EDIT: ooh, Priest of Fell Rites. Plus haste = insanity?

From a design point of view, nice to see all the little nods.
Like how the faeries are {G}{U} as a nod to earlier faeries being green.

Things that stand out to me include Scarzam, the Dimir Dragon tribal planeswalker. I had actually been thinking about Dimir dragons, with dragons recently bleeding a little bit into blue, and about how it would make for a wacky archetype.

The other that caught my eye is Xira. Now that's a real blast from the past, and leaning fully into the parasitoid insect trope. I very much like.

I'm sad that there's no new Slimefoot, although Nemata is an acceptable substitute.

I did not care much for Dominaria. In retrospect, the set felt a bit uncanny valley - it was trying to call back to an old era of Magic while reframing it through current artistic/design sensibilities. However, DMU is working for me. The cards shown on the preview are not wildly adventurous designs, they keep it basic, but they manage to make the basics come together in interesting ways. Raff, Weatherlight Stalwart is the card that started turning me around, I guess I'm a sucker for modularity these days. I can try to make go-wide and instants/sorceries come together, there's some swarming sort of stuff like Raise the Alarm or peezy-likes like Murmuring Mystic, but is there enough of the latter? What's the correct density of the former? Interesting thing to try to figure out in practice in building!

Also this may be a small thing, but damn are stun counters elegant. I can see people using counters of some kind to help remind themselves of stuff being frozen, and this just codifies that and introduces some interesting gameplay knock-on effects as a result. It seems that Magic is growing out of its recent clunky wordings a bit. For example, I'm also somewhat happy about Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary - "whenever X, pay something, get Y" is more acceptable to me than walls of text stifling the ability in some way while still capping it in practice.
Unofficial Spoiler Discussion
The stun counters and Raff are actually a great little demo for what's in store for the set, as per the PDF - loads of very elegant, simple designs and interesting bits of modularity. There are bits of callbacks, but the ingredients are reshuffled to feel fresh and enticing. Crucially, none of this is wildly overpowered. So far I see one include in one of my decks, and even that's not guaranteed. However, I am considering building like three of the legends, which is crazy talk from me.

It's interesting to see some of the ground covered in design. A bunch of Snappy-like spell recursion, loads of legendary matters stuff, including a cascade 5c commander that is actually not an eyesore. I like the instant/sorcery matters stuff, as it's simultaneously a nod to the busted stuff of yesteryear and to the low-power fun of STX. Loads of acknowledging of lands with land types, which is nice (and not at all related to the SNC triomes :P ). The use of kicker is also quite elegant in practice, calling back the original multi-colour sets while offering interesting bits of flexibility. Tear Asunder is not crazy, you get a Revoke Existence/Utter End, but it's just so satisfying.

Stuff I liked:
  • Academy Loremaster is a great design for a draw-go shell.
  • Cosmic Epiphany is an elegant late-game refuel for a caster deck.
  • Meria, Scholar of Antiquity is an endearingly imperfect bootleg Urza, kind of like a differently flavoured Svella that's actually kind of cool. Yeah, there's ramp and draw on the card, but they're both done lousily. I'm likely to give this one a brew.
  • Twinferno got me smiling. Where will it go where you can use both modes?
  • Baru, Wurmcaller works very nicely for me as it says the magical word "wurm" on it, and fills in some of the shortcomings of a typical wurm tribal deck in interesting ways. Watch out Saryth, there's a competing sheriff in town! :P
  • Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant is a card that I'm happy is getting made. It's nice to give a Faith's Reward at 5 for any colour that wants it, and you get an incidental extra turn hate piece in the process.
  • Moira, Urborg Haunt is how you word a hoop to make it sound cool. Progress on this front too, nice!
  • Primeval Spawn also has a safety valve on it, but somehow the entire design of the card revolves around this valve in a very interesting way. It's worded in a way where you can't help but start thinking how to get some of the mana off the cast, and then your mind goes to blinking it, but then you remember the valve... it just works for me, okay? :P
  • Rosnakht, Heir of Rohgahh is the aforementioned single include, it's going into my Feather.
  • Tetsuo, Imperial Champion is an interesting example of modularity, caring about big equipment... and instants/sorceries?
