The glorious flavor win of J. Jonah Jameson has single-handedly increased my interest in the Spider-Man set.

I'll never give any human spider a slot in my decks, really don't like this crossover, but I'm always impressed by how designers translate characters from source materials from outside the Magic lore to MTG mechanics. Hats off even though I'll never play this card.

UB haters I gonna get so mad at me but Jonah's card this is the most flavorful card I have ever seen in the history of all mtg cards in my life

You put a suspect counter on a creature (gives it menace and can't block) he always sees spider man as a criminal and the menace matters with treasure tokens he calls spider man a menace all the time and literally the daily bugle gets publicity/profit from those articles.

But really the real anger from haters is I'm legitimately excited for the spider man set

One of the things MaRo has said repeatedly is that they always make sure to have a good number of people who love and know the property designing the sets (for example, he loves Spider-Man and is on the Spider-Man set). Say what you will, but the people who make the sets put their heart and soul into making sure it is the best set it can be (even if there are some misses).

WHOA! pleasant surprise marvel gave maro the thumbs up for teasers

https://www.tumblr.com/markrosewater/79 ... man-teaser

Maro's Spider-Man Teaser
Before previews for Marvel's Spider-Man officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I'm only giving you partial information.

First up, here are some things you can expect:
• a new artifact Food
• "mind swap" as flavor words
• a new card with "Rocket-Powered" in its name
• some new counters – ingenuity and film
• a five-color Spider-Man
• a reanimation spell that can reanimate a number of creatures never used before
• a card that keeps the "legend rule" from applying to Spiders
• a card that lets you exchange life with another player
• a character, other than Miles, from the Ultimate universe
• a famous Spider-Man meme is made into a card (basically they are doing a art with the two Spider-Man's pointing at eachother)

Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:
• "Exile those tokens when Mysterio leaves the battlefield."
• "choose a card type other than creature."
• "Look at the top nine cards of target opponent's library,"
• "You may cast this card from your graveyard by discarding a card in addition to paying its other costs."
• "Whenever a creature you control with menace attacks, create a Treasure token."
• "You don't lose unspent red mana as steps and phases end."
• "If you do, draw X cards, then you may put a permanent card with mana value X or less from your hand onto the battlefield."
• "loses all abilities and becomes a green Lizard"
• "Until next turn, he becomes a land and gains "T: Add {U}."
• "Whenever you attack with two or more Spiders,"

Here are some creature type lines from the set:
• Legendary Creature – Symbiote Spider Hero
• Legendary Creature – Human Mercenary Hero
• Legendary Creature – Human Detective Hero
• Legendary Creature – Mutant Advisor
• Legendary Creature – Sand Elemental Villain
• Legendary Creature – Human Shapeshifter Villain
• Legendary Creature – Human Warrior Villain
• Legendary Creature – Vampire Scientist Villain
• Legendary Creature – Insect Villain
• Legendary Artifact Creature – Robot Villain

Finally, here are some names in the set:
• Parker Luck
• Pumpkin Bombardment
• Radioactive Spider
• Rent Is Due
• Spider-Verse
• Spiders-Man, Heroic Horde
• Wall Crawl
• Web of Life and Destiny
• Web-Shooters
• With Great Power…

Tune into Marvel's Spider-Man debut at 3:30 pm Pacific Time on August, 29th 2025 on twitch.tv/magic.

"Look at the top nine cards of target opponent's library,"
It just hit me just now with that one

I will be shocked if this is not Black cat/felica the "nine" cheesy reference to "9 lives" because she's a "Cat Burglar",

However it could be a coin flip if she will have the "hero" or "villain" type

She steal… but she pretty much very quickly fell in love to spider man and she converted to hero quite a bit because of that of trying to win him

"Exile those tokens when Mysterio leaves the battlefield."
For this one this might be the first in history but I can actually predict what he will do

Mysterio techniques has always been optical illusions with special effect devices and stage illusions also he also a master hypnotist and magician

So with this I'm like 100% sure the tokens will be Illusion tokens that are copies of him, and the ability of exiling them that's what happens when you nail the real mysterio

And this is my guess of how he will work he probably creates X illusion tokens, and if you try to target mysterio it will auto redirect the spell and it chooses at random a illusion token or the real mysterio, also if he attacks all the illusion tokens attack with him on the same player he's attacking. And same case here if you try to block mysterio, it will likely randomize if the creature ends up blocking the real mysterio or a illusion token.

Still waiting for Mr. Aziz :pensive:.
So you mean Mr Aziz the guy who works at the pizza place or Mr. Ditkovich Peters landlord?

Either way I think both are movie characters and don't show up in the comics which means they won't show up at all.

J. Jonah is ok. Seems like suspect is low hanging fruit, and a pun besides. Getting a treasure when a menace creature attacks is cute.

I generally hate this set and am glad most of the cards kind of suck. UB should have really been a separate game that uses the Magic system, which would have let the designers go even more nuts because they wouldn't have to worry about their designs interacting with cards from Magic's entire history, while also not turning Magic into Fortnite.

I'm genuinely interested in Anti-Venom though, and will pick up it's Universes Within version if it drops on MTGO. He's a mono W reanimator commander with an absurd casting cost and a neat static ability. One major knock? He should have removed poison counters somehow. I know, MARO has this bugaboo about poison needing to be permanent, but one hard to cast legend being able to at least remove a couple would have been fine. It would only ever matter in EDH, and having your poison win randomly stopped because someone was running the white symbiote is the sort of crap that should happen in commander.

Every day I wake up, remember The Soul Stone is a card, get angry, and go back to sleep.
Eh, I'm with Tomer on this one. I have my problems with the card, but it's primarily about the fact that it's going to be a new absurdly expensive hyper staple. I actually don't think it's that crazy in terms of power creep, just because rocks probably need some help and both modes are mediocre.

It only taps for Black after you put Black into it so it's not even real Mana fixing. Plus Debtors' Knell hasn't been a playable card in years, and I doubt that changes when you give it flash and you have to Exile a creature to it.

No, the real problem is that it's a new $50 card that has functionally zero deck building requirements. Basically The Soul Stone is to Black Mana rocks what Trouble in Pairs is to card draw engines, except it's not as hard on the power creep because it's not strictly better than pretty much every other card in its color and class like that is.

If this was being printed as an uncommon I would have significantly less problems with it, but that's not where the game is right now.

This is my only problem with it. It goes in every Bx deck with mana rocks. It's going to be yet another boring, ubiquitous card that also happens to cost a million dollars.

Thematically………I feel like it should have been for each creature you control.

The boost is great, but I just worry about the clapback from that second ability (I'm looking at it through the lens of Killian, Ink Duelist).
