I've watched literally a crap ton of it over the years. Honestly I really really wish they had quit while they were ahead, because anything past seasons 9-10 are pretty underwhelming.SocorroTortoise wrote: ↑4 years agoHermes_ Sounds like you're having a rough week. How does Simpsons hold up if you weren't watching from the beginning/growing up with it? I think I've seen a couple episodes, the movie a while back, and a handful of assorted other stuff but it was never a regular thing for me. Any merit to going back to it now outside of the cultural touchstones?
As an aside, I'm being surprised by UPS right now. Ordered some computer parts Sunday and they're supposed to be delivered today with the slowest shipping option.
In terms of how the golden era seasons 5-6 to 8 hold up, I personally think a lot of it is still pretty hilarious. I think at its zenith it holds up better over time than the closest comparison, which is probably Family Guy. That's just my opinion though. I like family guy, but I think a lot of the 'best of the best' is still pretty topical, and has kind of aged worse. Simpsons is guilty of this too, but the touchstones in its best of the best are most enduring. And that's the beauty of the show; I got into it as a kid of like, 8, and found it pretty funny. Rediscovered it as a teenager/more adult person and found a whole different layer of comedy in the same show. There was a depth to the comedy there that you don't see in a lot of other stuff. That's gone now, their hey day has ended, but at its best it was pretty damn transcendent.
