The turnip or white turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa) is a root vegetable commonly grown in temperate climates worldwide for its white, fleshy taproot. The word turnip is a compound of turn as in turned/rounded on a lathe and neep, derived from Latin napus, the word for the plant. Small, tender varieties are grown for human consumption, while larger varieties are grown as feed for livestock. In the north of England, Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall and eastern Canada (Quebec, Newfoundland and the Maritimes), turnip (or neep) often refers to rutabaga, a larger, yellow root vegetable in the same genus (Brassica) also known as swede (from "Swedish turnip").

We see this use as early as 1656, in a book of poems that refers to a "poor turnip-eating Clown." We also see it in Charles Dickens's "Pickwick Papers," published in 1836. His character Sam Weller refers to himself as a "soft-headed, inkred'lous turnip."
The two couples are neighbours in Norfolk, where the Cambridges have their countryside bolthole, Anmer Hall. They're part of a "set" (an aristo term for friend group) of wealthy 30-somethings who the press has dubbed the Turnip Toffs. Toffs, for those not fluent in Tatler, are usually titled, always rich British people.

National net wealth, also known as national net worth, is the total sum of the value of a nation's assets minus its liabilities. It refers to the total value of net wealth possessed by the citizens of a nation at a set point in time. This figure is an important indicator of a nation's ability to take on debt and sustain spending and is influenced not only by real estate prices, equity market prices, exchange rates, liabilities and incidence in a country of the adult population, but also human resources, natural resources and capital and technological advancements, which may create new assets or render others worthless in the future. The most significant component by far among most developed nations is commonly reported as household net wealth or worth and reflects infrastructure investment. National wealth can fluctuate, as evidenced in the United States data following the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent economic recovery. During periods when equity markets experienced strong growth, the relative national and per capita wealth of the countries where people are more exposed on those markets, such as the United States and United Kingdom, tend to rise. On the other hand, when equity markets are depressed, the relative wealth the countries where people invest more in real estate or bonds, such as France and Italy, tend to rise instead.cadp_ wrote: ↑3 years agoNonsense Filter

In economics, capital consists of human-created assets that can enhance one's power to perform economically useful work.[citation needed] For example, a stone arrowhead is capital for a hunter-gatherer who can use it as a hunting instrument; similarly, roads are capital for inhabitants of a city. Capital is distinct from land and other non-renewable resources in that it can be increased by human labor, and does not include certain durable goods like homes and personal automobiles that are not used in the production of saleable goods and services. Adam Smith defined capital as "that part of man's stock which he expects to afford him revenue". In economic models, capital is an input in the production function.NinjaCaterpie wrote: ↑3 years agoVery Big Turnip

A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations. It is not intended for use on an out-of-control fire, such as one which has reached the ceiling, endangers the user (i.e., no escape route, smoke, explosion hazard, etc.), or otherwise requires the expertise of a fire brigade. Typically, a fire extinguisher consists of a hand-held cylindrical pressure vessel containing an agent that can be discharged to extinguish a fire. Fire extinguishers manufactured with non-cylindrical pressure vessels also exist but are less common.

Classical architecture usually denotes architecture which is more or less consciously derived from the principles of Greek and Roman architecture of classical antiquity, or sometimes even more specifically, from the works of the Roman architect Vitruvius. Different styles of classical architecture have arguably existed since the Carolingian Renaissance, and prominently since the Italian Renaissance. Although classical styles of architecture can vary greatly, they can in general all be said to draw on a common "vocabulary" of decorative and constructive elements. In much of the Western world, different classical architectural styles have dominated the history of architecture from the Renaissance until the second world war, though it continues to inform many architects to this day.Cythare wrote: ↑3 years agoTursona

Hoplites (HOP-lytes) (Ancient Greek: ὁπλίτης) were citizen-soldiers of Ancient Greek city-states who were primarily armed with spears and shields. Hoplite soldiers utilized the phalanx formation to be effective in war with fewer soldiers. The formation discouraged the soldiers from acting alone, for this would compromise the formation and minimize its strengths. The hoplites were primarily represented by free citizens – propertied farmers and artisans – who were able to afford a linen armour or a bronze armour suit and weapons (estimated at a third to a half of its able-bodied adult male population). Most hoplites were not professional soldiers and often lacked sufficient military training. Some states maintained a small elite professional unit, known as the epilektoi ("chosen") since they were picked from the regular citizen infantry. These existed at times in Athens, Argos, Thebes, and Syracuse, among others. Hoplite soldiers made up the bulk of ancient Greek armies.Stapler wrote: ↑3 years agoThe Mushroom Princess

The collectible card game Magic: The Gathering was first released in 1993 with very few restrictions on how players could construct their decks (which cards to include, and how many copies of each card were allowed). The game evolved over time, and different formats were developed which each had different constraints for how players could construct their decks. Constructed formats, for instance, allow players to build decks in advance using cards from their collection, although only a subset of cards are allowed. Another major development was the creation of officially sanctioned tournaments that offer prize money. These official tournaments created an incentive for players to continue to buy cards for new sets, and helped establish a long-term future for the game.

Whereas turnip possesses an effective sporophytic self-incompatibility system similar to that found in B. oleracea, Brassica napus is generally self-compatible. This may reflect early natural selection for self-fertility during evolution of the species since the chances of establishment of the rare natural hybrids between B. rapa and B. oleracea would have been enhanced if they were self-fertile. Crosses between self-fertile swede plants therefore have to be made following emasculation. However, naturally occurring self-incompatible swede plants have been found, functional S-alleles have been introgressed into B. napus from turnips and self-incompatible plants have been produced by resynthesis of B. napus.Sporegorger_Dragon wrote: ↑3 years agoRuta-Baga, Turnip Matriarch

Flavor text: "Enough is enough!"
IIW: green Plant token with 0 power.
Perhaps because turnips were considered suitable eating for barnyard animals, they came to be associated with dullness and stupidity. A "turnip-eater" was considered a stupid person; a "turnip-head" a peasant or a country bumpkin. And "turnip" itself became slang for a simpleton or a fool.Lorn Asbord Schutta wrote: ↑3 years agoSudden Turnips

Until end of turn, each nonland permament becomes colorless Food artifact, loses all abilities and gains ", , Sacrifice this permament: You gain 3 life.".
Just when you think that you have seen all.
IIW: Double-Faced card containing on at least one side powerful spin on one of Power 9.
We see this use as early as 1656, in a book of poems that refers to a "poor turnip-eating Clown." We also see it in Charles Dickens's "Pickwick Papers," published in 1836. His character Sam Weller refers to himself as a "soft-headed, inkred'lous turnip."
The phrase "to give a person turnips" means to jilt someone, or to get rid of him or her once and for all.Lorn Asbord Schutta wrote: ↑3 years ago

, : Create a Food token. (It is colorless artifact with ", , Sacrifice this permament: You gain 3 life.")
Whenever you sacrifice your third Food each turn, target creature gains haste until end of turn.
"That's my work, madam, I help papa at field with these turnips, pecking the slowly from soil. You have to eat them much to not be hungry, but all our family loves their spicy taste."

IIW: Santa has the flu this year and Rakdos is here to save Christmas
The two couples are neighbours in Norfolk, where the Cambridges have their countryside bolthole, Anmer Hall. They're part of a "set" (an aristo term for friend group) of wealthy 30-somethings who the press has dubbed the Turnip Toffs. Toffs, for those not fluent in Tatler, are usually titled, always rich British people.
San Antonio rock band Turnip has recently been making noise in the heavy music community. Their crushing guitars, banging drums, and soaring vocals take cues from an assortment of genres, including but not limited to southern rock, doom, sludge, blues metal, and many more. As heavy metal and hard rock have been growing increasingly stale, the band takes the juiciest bits and cooks up a fresh sonic stew. Turnip produces a special brand of desert rock that is as oppressive as it is meditative, painting rugged pictures of final duel stare-offs between spur-janglers.

I was literally the only person to do the alternative challenge, and so I suspect I may have just won by default.
I'll judge somewhere around this time tomorrow. Considering that I'm attempting to put together a set around the idea that the home plane of the Slivers (y'know, pre-Rath) has some kind of horrible three-way battle between Slivers, Eldrazi, and Nephilim that involves hybrids of them, if anyone has objections to me using any entries for this challenge as part of that set, please let me know. (Declining will not affect how I judge your card, and credit will be given to anyone whose designs I use.)
