Welcome to the DCC!
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post in the DCC Discussion Thread.

How To Play

How does this card-making game work? It's simple! Whenever your card receives a vote, you receive [1] point for the month. If your card ends up with the most votes for that day, you will receive [2] additional points for the month. In the event of a tie, each person who tied receives [1] additional point. At the end of each month, the person with the most points on the scoreboard wins that month, then the scoreboard is cleared for the next month. You can participate in as many or as few days as you want in any month.

Rules

  • Each day you may post any card you want. On the next day all of the posted cards will be put into the thread as long as your card didn't get disqualified - see the next point for more details. If you post more than one card in a DCC thread, only the first card you post will be taken.
  • When you vote, you need to make exactly two votes for two different people.  Vote for the cards that are listed in the first post, not other cards being posted in the thread.  If you notice that you've only voted for one person, include your second vote in a post, even if you're not submitting a card.
  • If you want to change your vote for any reason, post that change in the day's thread (you can include it with your card if you want). Changed votes in the discussion thread will be ignored.
  • Voting for only one person, for three or more people, or for yourself will earn you an asterisk by your name in the monthly leaderboard. So will failing to vote if you've posted a card. (We're not going to do anything about people who don't vote or post cards; that would be kind of silly.) This indicates that you're on probation for the next 21 days. If you're on probation and you make another improper vote, your card will be disqualified. Repeated disqualification is grounds for warnings and/or infractions for not following the game rules, so please don't do it.
  • Voting for everything in the poll will be grounds for a lifetime ban from the DCC. Don't do it. It just wastes the thread creators' time.
  • If you wish to post a render, please use the hyperlink option when posting your card and make the card name the image link. Renders are usually large enough to clog up the list, so submit a text-formed card and (optionally) a link in the name to the render.
  • This thread is just for your card submission. Take your questions/comments to our discussion thread.  If it's a question, comment, or complaint about probation, PM void_nothing and/or the month's DCC organizer.
  • When posting make sure that:
    • You have included all of the previous day's entries.
    • You update the leaderboard with the previous day's scores.
(An easy way to post the new thread is to hit the multiquote button on every post in the previous day's thread, then click Post Reply. Select everything in this post, copy it, and then paste it into the first post for a new thread. You'll have to clean up a few small things, like quote tags around the opening post and the previous day's cards.)

Notes of the Day

Alright, all cards for August are in. All that remains is for us to vote on this last batch to decide a winner for the month. Then, on the 2nd, Leo takes over posting.

Story of the Day: Emile had not had a very lucky last few years. He'd never had the cleanest record. Even when he was a teenager, he had been trading in illegal markets and reading books that were outlawed in whatever nation he was in. By the time all the misfortune starter, there were a few places in the world where he was a wanted criminal. He always pointed out that he never hurt anyone. He would break a few laws or trade some contraband, but he always went out of his way to avoid fights, if he could help it.

He tried to make an honest living, as best he could. He traveled as a trader between nations where he wasn't wanted, and tried to make honest trades. But, since he already had some warrants for his arrest, the routes he could safely travel were very specific. When war broke out in the Hundred Nation Plains, those routes became even more complex.

His safest trade route took him through the far north, taking a long arc around the largest nations that marked him as a wanted criminal. It made the journey much longer and more nerve-wracking, as he had to travel through a lot of wilderness. Because it was such a difficult trek, most of his compatriots decided to leave his company to go work for other traders, leaving him with just a skeleton crew. But, then, with so few of them, they had become easy pickings when slavers had happened across them in the lawless tundra.

He and his company had found themselves in chains and cages, carried even farther north. None of them had ever known anyone who had been this far north. Some of the slavers regaled them with stories about how the sun would set and not rise again for several weeks in this place. Others said that, if you went far enough north, you would eventually reach places the sun had never reached at all.

In the slave market, Emile saw things that were unlike anything else he had ever witnessed. Pale beasts wandered in front even farther north, speaking with the citizens of this little town, and making trades. Occasionally he and his compatriots would catch sight of a giant meandering through the mountains in the distance.

One by one, Emile's crew were sold off to whatever creature wanted them, until it was Emile's turn.

The purchaser was an immense figure, wrapped in thick furs and perched atop what appeared to be a sled made from giant bones. A writhing, wool-covered, worm-like creature was lashed to its front, pulling it along the rocky ice at the beck and call of the strange figure. Even the natives of this town were surprised by the appearance of the figure, as though they were sure what they were.

The slaver who loaded up Emile's cage onto the back of the sled looked at him with pity, before a fur curtain was dropped over him.

Further north they rode, the cold growing ever deeper. Emile could catch glimpses of the world outside the sled. Ice sheets and pale stone slid by, day after day. But then, the light of the sun stopped appearing, and they rode into darkness.

His captor didn't appear to understand that he needed food, and just left him in the cage as they traveled. There were torches for warmth inside the fur-covered sled, but, even with them, he began to suffer frostbite, losing a couple of fingers to it.

The captor seemed to somehow know when this happened, because it started paying more attention and making larger flames to keep the sled warm. It never said anything, but it also started giving him raw fish to eat, as though it had suddenly realized that he needed food.

Weeks passed. They traveled every day, and he began to wonder how there could be even more land to the north. Deeper into the dark lands they pressed. He began to hear things out there. He didn't know what they were, but his imagination summoned up the image of giants meandering the wilderness, ice cracking underneath their weight. There came shrieking voices in the air high above, their tone sounding confused and afraid.

He passed in and out of sleep. Dreams were the only place he found relief from the cold, the dark, and the fear. He dreamed that he was back in the black markets of his youth, trading for stacks of books and going for swims in the canals of his home.

But, one day, he woke to find that he was no longer in the cage.
