There are some cards in the new set such as Great Desert Prospector that make powerstones. These state that they can't be used to cast non artifact spells but does that wording include not using the mana for activated abilities as a whole? It feels a little heavily short handed if that is the intention.

@TheAmericanSpirit In principle your answer was correct, but for future reference please don't give unsure answers. (See guideline 3.2)
The reminder text spells out the whole restriction. Mana from this mana ability can be spent to pay any cost except that of a nonartifact spell. This means activated abilities, costs paid during the resolution of a spell or ability like cumulative upkeep, whatever.

A wording like "Spend this mana only to cast an artifact spell" would mean, well, just that, but that is not at all the same as "This mana can't be spent to cast a nonartifact spell."

Given the wording, I am pretty sure you can spend the colorless mana to pay for any cost except the mana cost for nonartifact spells. For example, you can activate the ability of your Barrin, Master Wizard with powerstones, but you can't cast him with mana from powerstones.

It feels like it shorthand implies that but I feel they could have specified that better. Thanks for the clarification Void.
