I'm VERY intrigued. Is this pure variant format stuff or a regular mechanic in your mind?

It depends. I consider behemoth on a level with Contraptions. How would you categorize them? There are rules to use them in Limited and Constructed, same for behemoth. I also don't consider them acorn. In that sense these are "regular mechanics" - unlike conspiracies, vanguards etc.
