This weekly contest is broken up into two phases--

1. Monday-Thursday is the "throwing down the gauntlet" phase:

During this phase, you can enter the contest by challenging up to three other people to a duel. To challenge another person, you can use the following format: "I challenge @[username] to a duel!"

Once someone has been challenged, they can enter the contest before 11:59p on Thursday PST by accepting the challenge. To accept a challenge, reply with a design prompt that both duelists will follow in the next phase.

Each participant can accept multiple duels, but can only be involved in one duel per person per week.

2. Thursday-Sunday is the "challenge accepted" phase:

For each challenge that was accepted, the duelists must each post a single card that fulfills the prompt. Designs are due before 11:59p PST on Sunday.

If one duelist posts a design for a duel and the other does not, the one who did automatically wins that duel.

The contest thread for each week shall be posted with a public poll to decide winning duelists of the previous week. The poll runs three days.

Ties count as 1 win for each duelist.

I challenge @LandellXil0cent and @folding_music, kindly reminding both of them to put a rarity on their cards. I've seen too many missing rarities in the poll from last week. I never vote for a card with no rarity, as rarity is a fundamental part of the card. There are things that you'd only do on a rare but never on a common for example. As soon as I realize rarity is missing, I stop reading the card and just move on, not only here but in any contest. For these challenges, I feel it wouldn't be a completely fair challenge if my opponent puts no rarity in their card while I always do. That's why I wanted to write this reminder.

I keep the third challenge for later.

I have my d20 with me as usual.

I honestly don't know about this! we're designing single cards here and imho rarity matters most when you're making an entire limited environment. At all other times I just think of rarity as a disagreeable part of selling the cards as products and don't *want* it to factor into the design

@BatBite Congratulations! You got a natural 20! That's the boss fight! But who's the boss we're going to fight?

Boss fight! Your opponent controls an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and no other nonland permanents. Design a card set on either Zendikar or Innistrad that can exile Emrakul for good without returning it. (Notice: original Emrakul has protection from spells that are one or more colors, you will have to find a way to get around that...)

we are not required to use the rock mechanics as long as our card designs feel like they would fit the vibe of the rock faction. we may of course create new mechanics for rock

i tend to agree with folding_music. rarity is a construct designed to move product. yes, it is the nature of the game, and feels ingrained, but if folks want to design for rarity-less environments that's their prerogative.

ive had long phases where i didnt put rarities on any of my designs. especially when i was designing for my custom cube, where technically every card was the same rarity.

i acquiesce in card contests because i know it affects the evaluations of many judges and voters.

one point towards rarity is the power level diversity has been good for the game actually, because it assures a range that allows for the curation of different environments at different power levels. power creep has been depressing over the years, but the bulk of most cards are still closer to the arbitrary level i deem to be correct

I somewhat get where Bravelion is coming from though - it's hard for me to evaluate a card with no rarity because rarity relates to balance in how the game normally operates. I've posted cards where the critique was less of the card of itself than the fact that the rarity was too high or low for what it was. And when I'm evaluating other people's cards, the rarity can be a clue as to where the designer themselves intends the card to sit balance-wise. Like would this be a prize powerhouse card to draw in a pack or would it just be a well designed casual decent card?

It's true though that outside the normal monetized context of MTG packs/boxes, rarity is also a financial limitation or something related to the gambling and collecting aspect of the game that has considerations of the monetary value of the cards built into it. In a purely homebrewed context, I can see rarity not mattering and just designing sets where balance is a more general matter of designing smartly.

I feel like I have a degree of trouble designing commons partly because, in the context of a whole set, it seems that to a certain extent commons is significantly just filler / chaff to justify the set's themes and mechanics. There can of course be some stand-out 1-2 mana commons that are technically powerful cards too. But commons inherently is significantly about filling a space for cards that would best fit a casual format, Pauper, or cheap weenie strategies, etc. Otherwise, MTG inherently has a financial buy-in barrier based on the combination of rarity and the potentially quite pricey market for cards, and a competitive format where one could easily have a deck worth 500+ bucks.

My stance on rarity is based around the idea of rarity as a game mechanic. And this is totally a thing - many games have item rarities. It is also often tied to money or "shininess," yes, and things in those games are created with the idea in mind of draining money from people's pockets. However, there are games that have rarities without these trappings. For an older example, Diablo 2 had normal items, blue items, yellow items, green items, and gold items. For a more recent example, Slay the Spire 2 has common cards, uncommon cards, and rare cards.

In terms of a mechanic, rarity exists to separate things out into different categories based on power, and then to control the likelihood of the player getting particular cards. In MtG specifically, it's meaningless in constructed environments, but very meaningful in limited environments. This can be a reason why commons would all be more or less worthless compared to the higher rarities, as splitting things out like that creates a power curve for draft. But I've always felt that the disparity is too great between commons and rares in MtG, particularly with there being weaker rares and stronger rares. A pack in draft can have a bomb that could win you an entire tournament, or it could have nothing worth looking at.

As far as cube design goes, you can still design with rarity in mind, even if you don't put little gold or silver symbols on them. Or you can design a cube with all cards being at roughly the same power level, to avoid the "I got a card that wins me the whole tournament" problem.

These are both design choices that can fit perfectly fine within the scope of designing cards for MtG. So, I take a fully neutral stance on the presence of rarities - if it's not listed, I just toss the card in the S category.

Its dwarven nature to mine, and its rock faction nature to kill bugs. Now they killed two bugs with one stone.

we are not required to use the rock mechanics as long as our card designs feel like they would fit the vibe of the rock faction. we may of course create new mechanics for rock

Sneaky Illusionist U
Creature — Human Wizard (R)
Multikicker 1U (You may pay an additional 1U any number of times as you cast this spell.)
When this creature enters, create a 1/1 blue Illusion creature token for each time it was kicked, then target opponent looks at the top X cards of your library, where X is the number of Illusions you control, and separates them into a face-up pile and a face-down pile. Adventurer's Dagger 1WB
Artifact (R)

{W/B}{W/B}{W/B}, T, Exile this artifact: Exile target nonland permanent. Activate only as a sorcery.
