Welcome one and all to Crazy Bill's Merfolk Zoo! I know y'all have seen some merfolk in your time but these Merfolk have given up the the Water and I think you will grasping at your pearls at the oddities we have your y'all today.
Well folks that concludes our tour. I've been Crazy Bill and I'd love to know your favorite. Oh you liked the Oasis Stalker that was discovered by Cythare? Same. Make sure to visit our gift shop were you can find A weapon fit for a farmhand for your children to commemorate this tour.
First up we have the uncommon Undergrowth Ranger. Found deep in the jungles of Arcavios it was discovered by a Witherbloom alumnus, Krishnath. Being able to weave the jungle's vegetation around it it can be hard to pin down in a fight and as such is one of the most ellusive predators of said jungles.
Next up we have a Hyrdothermal Vent Dweller! Discovered by Famed Biologist Sporegorger Dragon, these Volcano dwellers can be found on Shivan of all places and are known to hunt Dragon eggs from in the lava tubes themselves. While not fire immune, they are resistant to the heat and flames just a little bit but extreme heat seems to send them in to a blind rage. I wouldn't even want to find myself with one in nature.Sporegorger_Dragon wrote: ↑3 years agoHydrothermal Ventdweller

From the Jungles of Ixilan we have the Deeproot Shaman. Discovered by the Dread Pirate and Anthropologist, Chetoos, these merfolk are known to be avid explorers, the Shamans of the Deeproot tribe are best found on long quests to find their purpose in life. I'd hate to have to gone on one of these quests only to find out that my life's purpose is underwater basket weaving.
By god its time for the eternal rebels of Amonkhet, the Oasis Infiltrators. Discovered by Gold Merchant and Recording Artist, Cythare "Folklore" Swift, these Merfolk have been known to worship the Eternal Oasis, in direct violation of most of Bola's Laws on the plane and as such are nomads in their lands.Cythare wrote: ↑3 years agoOasis Infiltrator

Now up nexts is the Depths Stalker. While you may not be able to see it in the inky blackness of its housing, the infamous Mushroom Miner,Togs, first discovered these Shadowy merfolk stealing his lunch of a tuna salad sandwich in the underdark of Faerun.
From the Great Plateau of Zendikar, we have the Steppes Talker. Famed for their ability to commune with the spirits, they were discovered by Lorehold graduate Megiddo and his Eagle Companion, Foles. Seances are common for these sages to preform thus why they are not recommended to be household pets.
The Deeproot Mystic of Ixilan are very similarly related to the Deeproot Shamans except the mystics are held in a special place of honor for being some of the few land dwelling merfolk that can channel the mana of their ancestral river homes. Discovered by the Sociologist Werepanther Vishamon, they were compared heavily to the Evles of deep shadow of Dominaria or the Pilgrims of Avacyn on Innistrad in their disertation.
The Skysea Privateers of Kaladesh are notorious bandits of aether and goods . Discovered by famed burlesque judge and self proclaimed lord of the Mantises, NinjaCaterpie, these sanctioned raiders are one of the few parites on kaladesh not involved with either side of the civil war and were often hired by both sides depending on the week.NinjaCaterpie wrote: ↑3 years agoSkysea Privateer

okay now we are back on track with the Magmatic Diver. These elemental Merfolk are in fact immune to the fires of volcanos and can be found in the caldera of Darigaaz as his servants and guards. Rediscovered after ages of believing them to be extinct by Geologist Spacemonaut, these merfolk have been known to have limited mind control over other elementals which looking at our audience means we need to get moving before they notice you, The Boulder.spacemonaut wrote: ↑3 years agoMagmatic Diver

Finally we have the bogborn Wanderer. Created by the Night hag Lookingupanddown, these are one of my favorites we have in our collection. They were created to help assist in gathering brewing supplies from the murky depths of the swamps and bogs but it is a little known fact they also are excellent Salsa dance partners.lookingupanddown wrote: ↑3 years agoBogborn Wanderer

Would be funnier if Billy Jo was a girl, but still pretty damn funny flavor text.
Remember, good flavor text is engaging, great flavor text is hilarious.

Mermaids are just the more modern version of Greek sirens, but if this is a Legends of Tomorrow reference I forgive you.

Kinda, but not really. Mythologically they really are quite distinct. The Sirens were originally often depicted as Hag like creatures, or bird people similar to the more well known Harpy. The Mermaids didn't really appear in western mythology until the renaissance and were always depicted as fish people, many scholars believe they were originally based on early depictions of sea cows and manatees. The conflagration of the two mythical beasts didn't really happen until the age of cinema.Phyrexian Editor wrote: ↑3 years agoMermaids are just the more modern version of Greek sirens, but if this is a Legends of Tomorrow reference I forgive you.

The Polish Syrenka has had a fish tail since at least the 1400s. Originally portrayed as a Siren (with bird torso) in the 1300s though. By the 1600s, the syrenka is a full-on mermaid (though sometimes she has two leg-tail things like the Starbucks logo, rather than a single fish tail starting at the waistline).Krishnath wrote: ↑3 years agoKinda, but not really. Yes, but the actual mythological Siren is from ancient Greece and Mycanae (sp?), which existed almost four thousand years ago, so you know. Not the same origin. The Mermaid didn't really exist until after Columbus's expedition to the new world. In modern pop culture, they are often interchanged, but mythologically they are different. It's the same with the Mermaid and the Selkie, not the same mythological critter, but very similar.vishamon wrote: ↑3 years agoThe Polish Syrenka has had a fish tail since at least the 1400s. If I wasn't clear at first, the syrenka (Warsaw's mascot) was originally a siren - straight up the Greek mythological creature. By 1459, her portrayal became more fish-like, having scales instead of feathers and a fishy tail. The Polish word for a siren is syrena.
While a proper "mermaid" may not have existed in European mythology until the 1500s or later, my point was more that your claim that siren and merfolk weren't conflated until the age of cinema is somewhat belied by the fact that the Polish word for siren and mermaid (syrena) has been the same since at least 1622.
