I literally typed out a whole paragraph in that post about how Dryad Arbor isn't vanilla because it has a mana ability, but then deleted it. Now you bring it upvishamon wrote: ↑3 years agoI wouldn't consider Dryad Arbor vanilla 🤔Sporegorger_Dragon wrote: ↑3 years agoI would say no. It's a unique corner case because the mana ability on basic lands is not usually written out.
Indeed it is not. And neither is Transguild Courier.

Well. this was a great turnout.
Without abilities, designers had to rely heavily on base stats and flavor to make their submissions stand out, and in this you've all succeeded.
As a result, this round is going a lot more subjective than my previous judgements, but hey, Nexus Flamingo.
My own preference would be to flavor this as a baloth!
The Memknight concerns me with its power (hah!). I mean, we are no longer in an era where Jackal Pup is too good, but giving every color a Savannah Lions?
Here's that unique negative toughness, and together with the flavor text they emphasize that this is something that should not be alive.
If you had just submitted a 3/3 with no mana cost, I would have skimmed over it. But the addition of that flavor text is what sells it. It's typical classic MtG gobbledygook that is absolute nonsense but makes you nod your head and pretend it makes sense.
Excellent use of flavor.
That in itself is an incredible story, and fits with being an otherworldly entity from the Blind Eternities, which are described as being the "nothing" between planes and thus are literally the lack of reality. This thing can't exist in our conventional reality.
Impressive what you can do with a single symbol. In a way, it's a counterpart to vishamon's entry above.
Both seem to justify this card, which slots right in the middle.
I do appreciate the flavor justification for the bizarre stats
*laughs in Doran, the Siege Tower*
A smart design, since the Locus subtype still allows it to contribute mana indirectly, basically acting as 4 more copies of the posts.
Clever reference to the Post's unsettling art, too.
All your submissions were great, but I feel the two that stood out the most were vishamon and Meggido.
Vishamon made me think more, but Megiddo conveyed so much with a single symbol.
I'm gonna give the win to vishamon, because their entry was unique, while there were a couple of other entries that had negative p/t.
Winner: vishamon
HM: Megiddo
Next prompt: Unusual type lines. (IE: Enchantment Land. Instant - Arcane Trap, etc.)
For some of you, there will be a strange sense of deja vu.

I think the flavor text is a little off for Force of Barbarism. You have Garruk exclaiming about freedom and being wild, but this thing dies unless you take care of it. Maybe a quote from a red planeswalker would have been better?Cythare wrote: ↑3 years agoForce of Barbarism

Again, I love me some biology, and the flavor is nice, but the typing really doesn't work within the rules as they are now. You really need a new card type, like tribal, to allow Lesson and Fish to be on the same type-line.
Now this is though-provoking. I see no toughness, just a minus/negative sign. Does this mean that, no matter what, this thing will always have negative toughness and can't actually exist on the battlefield?

Not much to say here, same issue with the Biomancy Lesson above, also flavor is a little redundant because Arcane is already the magic of the kami.
It's remarkable that this is one of the more plausible creatures so far, presumably made from the cartouches of the fallen. I think I'd like to see it more in red, though.

This is a Mel card, a designer's gimmick! Watchwolf exists, and so does Grizzled Leotau, each with a combined p/t of 6.
Both seem to justify this card, which slots right in the middle.
Qlippoth is basically the go-to for quasi-demonic eldritch horror now, huh, and this is a good attempt of an MtG version, presumably on a plane where these run rampant.void_nothing wrote: ↑3 years agoBroken-Husk Qlippoth

Hah! I was going to post a creature with Pi power (a Fractal, maybe?) in my own thread, but was still trying to figure how to put a Pi symbol.
