Excellent flavor, I love it. Only tiny problem I see, is that a zombie is supposed to be like dead-alive, and this is always dead, so why zombie? This could have more backstory, maybe like make them do an heroic sacrifice for value.

They are zombies because their creature type doesn't really matter. It'd be stupid for them to be humans if your commander is an elf, and it'd be stupid for them to be elves if your commander is a goblin, and so on, so I just picked a creature that is sometimes used to override the creature's race. Thus Zombie.
