Technically, we're starting with a card from the Planar Chaomander decks, but it's all part of the same spoiler season, so it's extra confusing. This card combines technically 3 mechanics together, landfall, surveil, and embalm. The landfall helps you set up plays, the surveil can put creatures in the graveyard to embalm later, and this color is rife with abilities to copy tokens, I like how this card comes together. My only note as a reviewer of cards is that the tap ability seems a little too easy. Maybe some mana cost with it?Mergatroid_Jones wrote: ↑3 years agoFrom a commander set.
Neferkasokar, High Minister
Legendary Creature- Human Advisor (M)
When a land enters the battlefield under your control, surveil 1.
: Target creature card in your graveyard gains "Embalm " until end of turn, where X is that card's converted mana cost.

IIW: Legendary enchantment whose name starts with G
In an aggressive heavy meta, this card seems dangerous, but if you can offset the self-damage, it's easily castable over and over. The jump start is there for when you want it a little cheaper, but as long as you keep filling your yard, you can keep drawing cards. The escape cost is also the only mode on this card where you get card advantage, rather than selection. A good mind game.NinjaCaterpie wrote: ↑3 years agoBurning Ingenuity
Instant (U)
Draw two cards, then discard a card. Burning Ingenuity deals 1 damage to you.
Jump-start
Escape - , Exile three other cards from your graveyard.

IIW: China made a new gacha game for weebs where all the units are cute anime characters dressed up as famous artifacts from Magic: The Gathering. Who's your favourite character?
Now that we have a card that can easily explore as much as it wants, I do wonder if WotC was right to limit how easy it is to explore in the original Ixalan block. Still, the abilities synergize well together, surveil setting up what you want to hit with explore, be it land drops or nonlands for counters. Excellent for filling up the yard for sultai decks.Sporegorger_Dragon wrote: ↑3 years agoJungle Wanderers

IIW: Plant creature token with 0 power
This card seems like a WotC mistake, on par with copy cat combo. The adventure is worded so that you get 4 power worth of tokens, 3 of it with abilities, for 2 mana, which is an amazing deal, and then 2 turns later, you already have at least 7 permanents for ascend, so you're practically there. Maybe a simple reword could have kept this card from becoming banned, reordering the token creation so it's back to front instead.Lorn Asbord Schutta wrote: ↑3 years agoLo!
I am really sorry for how it turned out and thank you @Megiddo for taking care of judging.
Questing Prince
Creature - Human Noble (R)
Vigilance
Ascend (If you control ten or more permanents, you get the city's blessing for the rest of the game.)
As long as you have the city's blessing, Questing Prince has first strike, lifelink and has indestructible as long as you control another creature.

Create a white 1/1 Peasant creature token. If you control a Peasant, create a white 1/1 Soldier creature token with first strike. If you control both a Peasant and a Soldier, create a white 2/2 Knight creature token with vigilance.
IIW: Seven deadly sins or Seven heavenly virtues
Ah, now this card is a much more fair way of repeating explore triggers, and if you can manipulate its counters, you gain even more life. A nice package that ties up neatly together. Maybe could have been a 1/2, though.lookingupanddown wrote: ↑3 years agoChulane's Apprentice
Creature - Human Druid
When Chulane's Apprentice enters the battlefield, it explores.
Whenever a historic permanent enters the battlefield, you may pay . If you do, return Chulane's Apprentice to its owner's hand. You gain life equal to twice the number of +1/+1 counters on Chulane's Apprentice.
Chulane and his students search for stories both old and new.

IIW: re-do a card banned in any format that isn't Vintage
A good piece of the black devotion deck in standard, helping to set up your draws and filling up the graveyard for escape shenanigans, as well as fueling its own recursion. Just a good value piece, not too over powered.PanchoPonceN wrote: ↑3 years agoMad Scavenger
Creature - Zombie Wizard (R)
When Mad Scavenger enters the battlefield, surveil X, where X is your devotion to black.
Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Return Mad Scavenger from your graveyard to your hand.
[2/2]
IIW: Something inspired by your favorite video game (please, include a reference).
Another decent black card, good aggressive card, though it was weird that WotC used regenerate again here, when they have since replaced it with "gain indestructible until end of turn". More surveil combination with graveyard mechanics, a good combination.
This card feels a little off. The main enchantment, plus a copy of Dragon Fodder attached if you kick it, but the main enchantment still feels very red even without it in the main mana cost. Plus, what if I want to attack with my Questing Beast, that doesn't get counted, but my pitiful Llanowar Elves gets to contribute, if something attacked? Feels off.void_nothing wrote: ↑3 years agoGlory of Discovery
Enchantment (R)
Kicker
When Glory of Discovery enters the battlefield, if it was kicked, create two 1/1 red Goblin creature tokens with haste.
Raid - At the beginning of your end step, if you attacked with a creature this turn, you may put a creature or enchantment card with converted mana cost equal to or less than the number of tapped creatures you control from your hand onto the battlefield.
Leave it to goblins to turn first contact into a shindig.
IIW: Drawbacks that can be played around.
If this was the idea that WotC had in mind for companions when soft-banning them with the rules change, it does make sense why they did it. It seems like they forgot that you can just play this in your deck as a 1 mana 6/6 as is. Really not sure how this got through R&D.
Anyway, now I guess I need to judge this stack of random cards selected from Planar Chaos 2: Plane chaoser. My choice for best card is...
Winner: Mergatroid_Jones, with Neferkosukar
Next: legendary enchantment that starts with G.
