It's one of the two dozen or so Iconic D&D monsters, so most, but not all, DM's are familiar with them. We've gotten some of the other iconics already: Red Dragon, Beholder, Illithid, Purple Worm, Bulette, Displace Beast, Drider. So I am not really surprised to see it.

I just hope we get an Aboleth at some point, those are both awesome and scary as heck. If you thought the brain eating squid faced Illithids/Mind Flayers were bad. Imagine a creature whose origins lie in the time before time, the universe before the current one, and which even newly hatched, remembers everything its ancestors have ever done, including what the first thing an Aboleth ever ate was. As a species they are so ancient and evil that the words "antediluvian eldritch horror" is the best way to describe it.
