Welp, I'm out of this month. It's been fun, I'll definitely keep an eye out for September. If only I'd italicized my reminder text and been able to come up with some suitable flavour text! Ah well, you live and learn!

I don't understand the reasoning behind Subchallenge 1. Mana symbols exist in the rules text of multiple cards (not including all the lands), though Force of Nature was an oddity listing "GGGG" instead of in its text.
May your games be chaotic and your decks be rogue.

You mean from a mechanics or flavor point of view?
If you mean mechanics, that subchallenge is there to discourage players from designing a card that has a monoblue mana cost but also has other additional colors in the rules text. Is Torch Drake a monoblue card? Technically yes, but it's really an Izzet card in spirit. And yes, I could have said "your card has no nonblue mana symbols in its rules text", to allow mana symbols of the same color of the card (I don't think there are cards in Alpha with offcolor mana symbols in their rules text), but then how about or blue Phyrexian mana? To avoid that kind of problems and make the subchallenge clearer, I went with the "no mana symbols allowed" wording.
If you mean flavor, I admit it's just one of the weak points in the story I've tried to tell with this round, and not the only one. In fact look at how many times I've had to say "picture this" or "image that" because I needed something in the challenge that doesn't really make sense with what Alpha actually was, exactly like your Force of Nature example. I tried to justify that with alternate universes and different timelines, but the real reason it's there is the mechanical one. I've tried to find some flavor for it. Maybe I didn't manage to do it in a good way, but at least I've tried.
Oh, and by the way, I'll take this chance to specify that if you do the same trick as Force of Nature, typing U in the rules text without writing it as a mana symbol, not only it does NOT count for subchallenge 1, but it's also a serious Quality mistake, so please just don't do that.

I was looking for a flavor reason, not a mechanical one. It's an MCC; challenges are the host's discretion. It just felt out of place.
Kind of like the restriction of "Make an Alpha card, but base it on M20 sensibilities." Creatures sucked in Alpha. Spells were king. Savannah Lions was as a Rare through 9th Edition, and now it's in Pauper from Masters 25. And it's not good enough to see play in that format, because it doesn't do anything else. I played Counterburn in the early days, and I was one of the few that thought Manabarbs and Mana Short was funny (rarely happened, only ran one barb). A lot of folks want Counterspell in Modern; I want Power Sink so they're forced to tap (again, Manabarbs). Unfortunately, due to the errata update on Manabarbs, that trick no longer works with Mana Short, but would with Power Sink.
There's also a difficulty with balancing, because Alpha had mana burn - M20 does not. My initial submission was a PW that had a Tolarian Academy-like ability, though it only generated instead of . That's still a monoblue card. But, mana burn isn't a factor in card design anymore - would it be for an Alpha replacement? Rather that deal with that, I changed my design completely.
Finally: why was this Round narrated by Hubert J Farnsworth?

That's exactly the idea that I was going for. I built the time travel story on top of it. The loose theme of the month is "the beginning". Round 1 was the beginning of this site. Round 2 was a vehicle starting its march. Round 3 has to do with the beginning of Magic as a game, that's why Alpha is involved. And round 4 will be about another beginning, which I obviously won't mention here because spoilers.Sojourner Dusk wrote: ↑4 years agoKind of like the restriction of "Make an Alpha card, but base it on M20 sensibilities."
Honestly I don't know. I didn't even think about him while writing that paragraph. Actually, I didn't think about him until you mentioned him here. It was just a stylistic choice that for some reason inspired me. I've watched a few Futurama episodes, but not too many and I'm not a huge fan, unlike the other creation of Matt Groening, The Simpsons, which I absolutely love. Maybe it was a subconscious inspiration? I don't know. Finally: why was this Round narrated by Hubert J Farnsworth?

Looking for a volunteer to run the September MCC. If you've done this before, so much the better, and if you have not, there is an excellently detailed set of guidelines and I am available if you have any questions or need any guidance. I will personally be overseeing the DCC and CCL next month so no additional help is needed on either of those other contests at this time.
Psst, check the second page of Custom Card Contests & Games! Because of the daily contests, a lot of games fall down to there.

No problems, it happens. As I always say, real life comes first. I just wish it happened in a different round, not the versus one. Hope to see you again next month.

I might be a bit delayed in my judgings, this round. The college workload is bizarrely heavy. More so than during previous semesters.
Alright, I managed to finish my Round 3 Judgings before the deadline. (Now to go and continue working on homework.)
Also, I would offer to handle the MCC for September, but that would effectively be suicidal on my part.

For my projects (Jeff Lionheart, "One pierced heart, two mindful horns", republished articles from my series "The Lion's Lair", and custom sets), see Leo's content index (Last updated on April 25th 2024 - Added TLL #5).
After I'm done republishing my articles I want to reprise the series focusing it more on editing, wording, and templating. Suggest potential future article topics here.

Yes, this will be the last call for organizer. Should no one volunteer I'll take over (I have a fun idea in any case).
Psst, check the second page of Custom Card Contests & Games! Because of the daily contests, a lot of games fall down to there.

Question about the current challenge: Can it be a colored artifact?

Excellent. I'll see what I can come up with that feels sufficiently Phyrexian.

May I request that new threads for the MCC are always announced with a post in here? It's not easy to tell between multiple rounds of MCC (at times for two months in parallel), DCC and CCL etc. whether a new thread has gone up at all.
Request for clarification (MCC Spetember Round 1): Does "Pay(s) N life" have to appear capitalized as shown or is "[...] pay 100 life [...]" also fine?

Yeah. I don't see why not - please do pay attention to months and round numbers but going forward I'll try to link new threads here as well.
No, capitalization is not important; the life payment doesn't have to appear at the beginning of a cost, it just has to be used somewhere in the card's abilities.

Yes, X is a (variable) number.
