What Is the MCC?

The MCC, or Monthly Card Contest, takes place over four rounds each month. The first round each month is open for anyone to enter, and further rounds will only be open to contestants who advanced past the previous round.

Each round will have its own challenge with two optional subchallenges that the entrants will be asked to complete with their submitted custom card, and that month's pool of judges will score each card, with only the highest-scoring contestants per judge advancing to the next round.

In the third round, contestants are paired off and each pairing is judged by two or more judges, with the contestant in each pair with the highest total score advancing. The final round sees all the judges score all the finalists to determine the month's winner.

This thread is for general discussion of this contest. All posts that are not entries or judgments in the round threads will be considered spam.

I have been in contact with void_nothing working behind the scenes. I think I can say publicly that I have given them my complete availability to host the first MCC (August) if I'm needed to do that. Also, there should be no changes to the rubric at all, so no need to worry about that.

EDIT: Ok, so now it's official. I will be the host of the first MCC here on MTGNexus. Round 1 should be up tomorrow night.
(I'm hosting the last MCC on MTGSalvation and will host the first here. Have I unlocked some kind of achievement? Have I kinda entered history in a way? Nah, I'm just glad that I get to do what I enjoy|)

EDIT 2: And the first ever judge signup thread is up. Now I can say with confidence that Round 1 will indeed be posted tomorrow night. Get ready! It begins!

EDIT 3: "Tomorrow night" has come, and as promised, here's the beginning. Welcome back to the MCC, everyone! Welcome home!

Clarification request: does reminder text count? Thinking specifically about suspend and fading/vanishing, but might be relevant elsewhere as well.

No. It has to be actual rules text. Adding this to clarifications.

How is it that Sphinx of Foresight would not meet the main challenge? It's third ability (below flying) reads "At the beginning of your upkeep, scry 1." That's a triggered ability that uses your exact required wording.

I assume what is meant that "At the beginning of your first upkeep..." and other not-exact-words abilities don't pass - so a better example would be Chancellor of the Dross or Providence.

Also, you should format your text cards accordingly to the brand new MTGNexus MCC Guidelines and FAQ. Again, expect deductions in Quality otherwise. The recommended card formatting is in paragraph 4. As I've said before, if you have time and will to read that document in its entirety, I invite you to do so. It should be useful to everybody, hosts, judges, and players. And speaking of players...
The sentence I've bolded should say "section" instead of "paragraph".

Should we also add the "cardtext" tag as a potential for card formatting?

First, a note for everybody: as of now, there are a couple cards submitted that have abilities that trigger "At the beginning of each player's upkeep". Those technically do NOT pass the Main Challenge. As I've written in the clarifications spoiler, it has to be literally "your upkeep" or "each upkeep". Any other variations, including "each player's upkeep", do NOT pass the Main Challenge.

Now for some answers.

void_nothing's answer is the correct one. I was talking about the first ability saying "first upkeep", completely overlooking the fact that the Sphinx has a last ability that would totally make it pass the Main Challenge. I'm going to remove it from the examples and substitute it with the other ones that void_nothing mentioned.

In Italian those are called "paragrafi" (paragraphs) and not "sezioni" (sections), that's why I did that mistake. Good catch, and I'm sure it won't be the only one. In fact...

That's one of the first things that I actually thought about when I started writing the document and then I completely forgot to write it in. My current intention is that the classic card text formatting (the one I detail in section 4) is preferred, though obviously judges should not penalize you if you use the new "cardtext" tag that has been built specifically for custom card creation.

Please keep giving me feedback on the guidelines document. I think I will collect all the typos and feedback I can before making an update to fix all typos that are certainly still there after multiple revisions on my part, and implement the feedback. It would be useless if I updated it for every little correction only to discover more little corrections are needed. Let's get a good number of those, and then I'll put them in place all together. In the meantime, thank you all again and keep the feedback coming.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but what's the difference between "each upkeep" and "each player's upkeep"? What has an upkeep other than a player? There are multiple cards with each wording (Asylum Visitor and Baleful Force for example), but until now, I've never really thought about why that is.

"Each Player's" will later refer to that player, while "each upkeep" is unrelated to the player whose upkeep it is.

I accidentally liked your posts instead of quoting them. I still have to get used to the new layout.

Anyway, I have two answers to Flatline's question, depending of the context of the question.
1. If we're talking about real MTG, Cardz5000's answer is the correct one. There is no functional difference, only a difference in wording that depends on whether you reference the player later in the same ability or not.
2. If we're talking about this round of MCC, I have chosen to be as strict as I can on the allowed wordings to have the letter of the challenge be as well defined as possible to minimize potential problems. Does your card literally say "your upkeep" or "each upkeep"? Yes, it passes. No, it doesn't. If I allow players to use variations on the allowed wordings, which is also perfectly fine, it's just a choice of the host for the month, I open the doors for players to go well beyond the intended limits of the challenge. That's all. Maybe in another round or another month, I or some other host will make the other choice, and it will not be a problem in any way.

Oh, and by the way, as I often say to my students in my real job as a high school teacher, there are no stupid questions. Every question, no matter how obvious or apparently stupid, is born from a desire to learn and understand what you don't know or understand yet. Having a question means you care, and asking them is a highly dignified act. So just keep asking questions and keep exploring the unknown. It's exactly this drive that makes science (in my specific field, I'm a chemistry teacher for those that might not know) or knowledge in general advance, and it's one of the things that defines us as human beings.

Thanks cardz and bravelion. I was talking about the reason it's worded differently, not about why you've chosen to setup your challenge as you have. I probably could have figured it out for myself rather easily, which is why I called it a stupid question. A lazy question is probably a more accurate description. I also believe that there are no stupid questions. I have a saying at work, "doing something 'stupid' is far worse than asking something 'stupid', so it would be stupid not to ask".

I really, really like this. I think I could steal it to say to my students, especially while in the chemistry lab... Doing stupid things there can be quite dangerous...

I think it was a preview event for Hour of Devastation at some convention if I recall correctly.
It was Gencon 2018, as part of the Magic 25th Anniversary celebration. I was there watching, and a Jhoira cosplayer that happened to show up was allowed to suspend Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh on turn 2 with her ability. Spoilers, Nicky B won that round.
Thank you for filling in the details that I wasn't remembering. And by the way, I kinda envy you for having been there... I remembered watching the streaming from home, but didn't remember what it was exactly.

I'm very happy with the player participation for now. There are still three days before the deadline, so I hope it gets even higher!

Well I've never entered an MCC on Salvation but I figured "sod it, new forum right?" and threw my hat in. Realised I'd potentially stuffed the wording slightly when I was walking to work this morning but hey ho, we live and learn.

Entry below - should there be sufficient other entries to necessitate me judging, it won't be counted.
That's exactly what's about to happen. We have 25 valid entries as of now (not counting yours), and more could come in the almost 8 hours that are still left before the design deadline, so a fourth judge will certainly be needed.

I can't remember such a high participation with four judges needed in a very long time. The CCL and DCC also have a level of participation that I can't remember in years. I like this a lot, and that's a wonderful premise for custom card contests on MTGNexus. A huge thank you to everybody that entered any of our contests this month, and the MCC specifically.

I'd be happy to score mellifluoresce's judge entry.
Feel free. I was planning to do it myself, but then I'll let you do it and I'll take the bracket with one extra card instead. 25 submissions means 3 brackets of 6 and one of 7. Brackets are now in the round thread.
