So I have had a lot of fun playing in the "battlecruiser" tier on the PlayEDH discord and I wanted a single place to maintain my decks that are centered at that power level. I've started with each commander pre-con (currently C18 & C19) and I'm working on more.

Thought Process

These reconstructed decks are designed to be compatible with playing against the precons but are more focused on their goals. In terms of "numbered power Level these are likely a 4.

Tier List References

From EDH Unchained Discord "Low Tier" (3-4)
-Precons are the default power level for a 3.
-The cards synergize but not fully. The deck's goal is unclear with support lacking.
-Quality is often sacrificed for theme.
-Combat is the main wincon. Backup wincons may be present.
-Combos at this level are slow. They are unreliable and mana intensive(10* cmc total).
-Ramp tends to be solid quality but insufficient quantity.
-Interaction tends to be solid quality but insufficient quantity.
-Tutors are inefficient (4+ cmc) and uncommon.
-The mana curve is clunky/high (range of 3.5-4).
-Hug/political cards may be in the deck.
-The deck stalls out/runs out of steam when games go long.
From Command's Quarters
A Casual Deck wants to win but is not as tuned as it could be
A Focused Commander Deck is as tuned as possible within a budget
From The Command Zone
Focused 5-6
-Precons from the early years were unfocused.
-These decks have focused plans and they basically know what they are going to do and how they are going to win.
-Has the tools to enable the win it is designed for.
-Has room for some "bad" cards.
-tries to have the cards work together.
-Makes sure to include interactions
-Decent Mana Curves
Re-Constructed Design Parameters

  • Budget Target: $100 USD [75-125] Using TCGPlayer as a Price Mark.
  • Mana Curve Target: 3.75 [3.5-4.5] Very Deck Dependent.
  • Low Sodium: Most High-Salt or STAX type cards are heavily limited.
  • Basic Non-Basics: Expect 25% + tap lands depending on colors.
Precon Specific
  • Keep the heart: at least 50 cards should be obtainable in the Precon the commander comes from.
  • No Alt Commander: Each foil commander should have a unique spin on the deck. Might still be included if they sync heavily.
  • Reduced Cycle Use: Each of the color cycle card do not need to be in the deck if it doesn't fit.
  • Cut Money cards: Each super useful in-color card can be cut for better synergy.
Omitted Cards [/list]
Design Checklist
  • Card Draw: 5-10
  • Rocks: 1-8
  • Land Ramp: 3-8
  • Spot Removal: 3-5
  • Mass Removal: 1-3
  • Grave Return: 1-3
  • Grave Removal: 0-1
Future Considerations
  • Deck Variance: Every card should at least have one home.. hopefully. Not every deck needs a sol ring.. even though it's good
  • Conquest Cut Pack: Conquest is a variant I'm hoping to look more into and have a 20 card cut list to make them Conquest playable.

Commander 2019

Anje Falkenrath MADNESS

Anje Heavily Synergizes with madness above all else.
Some Graveyard Return is needed to keep discarding creatures more viable.
Anje MADNESS

Commander

Approximate Total Cost:

Ghired, Conclave Exile POPULATE

Ghired Shines best not with a lot of tokens but with very special or bigger tokens.
Ghired POPULATE

Commander

Mass Removal

Approximate Total Cost:

Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer MORPHS

Kadena needs so many morphs and some additional manifests.
Kadena MORPHS
Approximate Total Cost:

Sevinne, the Chronoclasm FLASHBACK

Sevinne isn't specific to flashback so I also include Vadrok and additional cast from graveyard options.
Sevinne FLASHBACK
Approximate Total Cost:

Commander 2018

Aminatou, the Fateshifter MANIFEST

Aminatou initally looks like a top deck matters - but she is more of an enabler of this more than an exploiter of it.
Her flicker -1 Makes her very effective as a manifest commander - employing it better than Kadena.
The deck tries to limit the spells count to maximize manifest odds.
Aminatou MANIFEST

Protection

Bombs

Fetchland

Approximate Total Cost:

Estrid, the Masked TOTEMS

Estrid wants a wide array of Creatures each enchanted rather than a single giant stack.
Heavy use of Totem Armor specifically is the theme for this build.
Estrid TOTEMS

Commander

Approximate Total Cost:

Saheeli, the Gifted AUTOMATION

Saheeli makes a lot of value out every artifact on board. However this usually makes her a target
Many other artifact copiers makes more threats than can be handled normally.
Saheeli AUTOMATION

Commander

Removal

Approximate Total Cost:

Lord Windgrace AWAKEN

Land Sacrifice ends up with way too much value and hard to deal with at this power level.
Using Man-Lands and other awaken mechanics can still be a heavy focus on Windgrace's land return.
Windgrace AWAKEN

Commander

Rocks

Approximate Total Cost:

Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign TOP DECK

Yennett is a much better user of the Top deck concept.
This deck has many scry and deck fixers.
Every card in the deck is a odd mana cost.

Old Tribe Cycle

I was looking at the Periodic table of Creature Types and it reminded me of some older creature types that has a lot of weak synergies that would be interesting deck builds.

Brigid, Hero of Kinsbaile KITHKIN ANTHEM

This is a very potpourri deck as Kithkin has many different mini themes within it.
Brigid KITHKIN

Mass Removal

Land

33 Plains

Land Ramp

Approximate Total Cost:

Llawan, Cephalid Empress CEPHALID COLORS

This deck uses Llawan as a partial Cyclonic Rift - lots of looting and self mill for a Lab-Man side option.

Ihsan's Shade DAUTHI SHADOW

Dauthi do not have a great commander but shade are a decent similar creature type.

Zirilan of the Claw VIASHINO DASH

The Viashino have a large tie to Dragons - the aim for this deck is to use them in some interesting ways via some sacrifice or clone mechanics.

Thrun, the Last Troll TROLL REGEN

Thrun is a very good voltron commander so this deck has a fair amount of good enchants and equipment.
