Re: Phelddagrif: Show Weakness to Hide Your Strength
In that specific example playing Preordain is probably a mistake, in my opinion.

Re: Phelddagrif: Show Weakness to Hide Your Strength
It's easier to believe that we're beatable if we've just been draw-going than if we've been scrying and filtering and etc. Your opponents would need brain damage not to expect a grip of counters and removal at that point. Well, a) have you played with randoms lately? and b) they would likewise need...

Re: Slogurk, the Overslime: It Came from the Mists
Here, I'm cold on it, but I think in most other controllish lists it could do a lot of work. It compliments a cantrip suite with Ponder and friends but I think here we need the cycling land synergy more than anything else.

Re: Phelddagrif: Show Weakness to Hide Your Strength
the discard clause single handedly disqualifies it imo. I mean, if it bounced itself without the discard it would be a little silly. I don't think the discard is a big deal, but I don't think the card really does anything here. What are we ramping into? Why do we want to drop so many lands into pla...

Re: Is Old Busted Still Busted?
Uril, the Miststalker and especially Mayael the Anima were never good exactly. We just didn't know better. It's more complicated than mere power creep, our understanding of the format has evolved since the 00's and as a result, decks are faster and more consistent than ever. Sure, more powerful opt...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Winota, Joiner of Forces
Great design, bad execution. It's good to see Boros get strong options in the command zone but Winota is just another in a series of obnoxious kill-on-sight commanders printed during that time frame. On the other hand, encouraging combat isn't the worst thing. I just don't have a lot of fond memorie...

Re: Kirkusjones presents: DirkGently's polite debate corner aka the Thunderdome
Edit: Do you consider your Slogurk list a voltron deck? The overslime grows on its own, so perhaps I am wrong if so. It's complicated. It wins via commander damage and the rest of the deck supports that strategy, albeit glacially, but there are no equipments or auras since The 'Gurk grows all by it...

Re: Kirkusjones presents: DirkGently's polite debate corner aka the Thunderdome
Not really a point for debate, but I am curious in light of the recent conversation about whether or not Dirk considers his Phelddagrif list Voltron. Certainly, there's no suiting up, but it does structurally rely on the same model of attacking with your commander until everyone is dead. Controltron?

Re: Non-Basic Land Soft Hosers
In general I find that just catching up to ramp players is the most fun option, vs. trying to prevent them from playing. Making %$#% enter the battlefield tapped is a nightmare for everyone to keep track of and people really suck at it. I dunno, I think Root Maze effects for nonbasics are great too...

Re: Slogurk, the Overslime: It Came from the Mists
would Oversimplify be a good board wipe? the tokens it leaves behind might be unfortunate, but it's the cheapest "real" board wipe in these colors I had completely forgotten about this card. Definitely worth testing. Exile is great, and while the token is problematic and doesn't at all sa...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Cliffside Rescuer
Highly efficient fetching did kind of jack up the dynamics of playing 3+ colors, I can't really argue against that. I guess that's cool if you're only concerned about efficiency but not great if you care about there being some kind of incentive for limiting yourself to fewer colors. There should be...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
To expand on, what is simics space for removal? counters stappled into creatures? I like the idea of more mass polymorphs or mass fights. For Slogurk specifically I want something like this: Spill Over [sym=1][sym=g][sym=g] Sorcery Target creature with Trample you control deals damage equal to its ...

Re: Simic Kellan Thought Expirement
See, this looks much more interesting, you've got removal, wipes, protection and I expect you to have to make some hard decisions while piloting this deck. (I will say the draw section looks suspiciously heavy when you have draw in the CZ, obviously it's good to have some if Thalia kicks the bucket...

Re: Simic Kellan Thought Expirement
Well, I got 3 games in and lost all three. lol I took his advice to heart with a second Thalia and The Gitrog Monster deck. That card is such a ridiculous four drop that you don't have to build around them at all. Only instead of parlaying that into constantly dropping game ending bombs, we're goin...

I'm testing Braids, Arisen Nightmare and I'll +1, Cabal Stronghold is a wastes. wish I heard @TheGildedGoose I'm tinkering with a Korlash, Heir to Blackblade list for %$#% and giggles. I grew weary of Torment of Hailfire . I can post it later, as I'm actually kind of proud of it. I don't know if is...

What argument is there for unbanning Gifts Ungiven ? A 4 mana instant to find you A+B combo and 2 ways to recur whatever went to the yard, or 4 pieces of interaction to protect the combo you're already holding, just screams oppressive, repetitive gameplay to me. How is it any different than any num...
