Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Oriq Loremage
Yeah, this has enough potential to set up combos I will absolutely try to kill it before the turn cycles, and most people I play with agree. Repeatable tutors are spooky.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Pearl Lake Ancient
One of the classic control finishers. Outclassed of late by Nezahal, Primal Tide, but I've seen in obnoxious simic landfall piles to enable that.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Daring Apprentice
Having to tap to counter that spell makes it a lot less useful, even if it is a hard counter. I've seen this in U/B/x or U/W/x reanimator decks that try to play permission with it, but it needs some kind of haste-enabler for that. There are enough good tap-and-sac creatures though that abusing them...

Re: Who wants to talk about spite scooping?
Personally, I think the politics are more interesting when theft effects are contingent on the other player surviving. There's an Ixhel deck in my meta that played like a big "get along" shirt, trying to keep everyone in the game until it got a critical mass of stuff and could take everyon...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Goldbug, Humanity's Ally
These feel weird and hack. They read ugly, they look bad, and they play awkwardly. I don't get why they made the cards based on a childrens' cartoon some of the most fiddly generals this side of competitive Breya, because no-one has a good time while the guy who only watches childrens' shows flips t...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Perish
These also tend to create "targets of convenience" where if, say, the blue player is ahead of the table, but someone in Gx has a decent board, the player who draws this tends to fire it off anyways for card advantage. So while they can be good, I find them irksome.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread
This is what I was referring to earlier with the format acceleration; cEDH trickle-down is very real and fundamentally corrosive to the format's original intent. See, but I explicitly said that wasn't the case. It wasn't that casual players started cribbing tricks from the cEDH tables to play casua...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread
Just my own anecdote: there was a dedicated cEDH group at a store I used to go regularly, and if anything I saw the opposite dynamic. The cEDH players tended to be a bit more regular in attendance, but kept pretty much to themselves. With a couple of them, they seemed to have a bit of a superiority ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
On the new Smothering Tithe , there is a reference to 'The Goose Mother', which seems like a likely card name. I believe we already have its art, from Maro's teaser https://assetsio.reedpopcdn.com/magic-the-gathering-sdcc-maro-teaser-goose-hydra.png?width=1200&height=1200&fit=bounds&qua...

Re: Is Mass Artifact/Enchantment Destruction BM?
I think that unlike most MLD, artifact removal is acceptable because it only targets a niche of decks. While everyone runs lands, not all decks get blown out by Vandalblast. Furthermore, those effects are standard across most playgroups, most even somewhat experienced players have seen mass artifact...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Kuon, Ogre Ascendant
This was synonymous with black stax in my first playgroup, until the deck got hated out. Still holds his own, I think, in bitterblossom-ish tokenstax decks that can easily flip him the turn they cast him.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Nemata, Primeval Warden
Tuesday, July 4th, 2023; Nemata, Primeval Warden Nemata, Primeval Warden Honestly, I don't get the hate. You get a stax piece that's also an engine + payoff in the zone, that's pretty sweet. Yet, this card is bulk and sees no play. Why? Incidental stax, except at higher powerlevels, is generally a ...

Re: Expropriate
Yeah, T&N has fair uses, which has kept it off the banlist, and when it's not, it and Thoracle are probably the most (in)famous instant wins in the format. Expropriate *isn't* technically a win, so it dodges around rule-0 conversations at the start of games. It adds nothing of value and further ...

IMO, New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Rogue One are the only really good pieces of Star Wars media, with Mando being "good for Star Wars" but not really holding up to Cowboy Bebop or similar space westerns.

Re: Is it feasible to have a custom mix of focus colors for a hypothetical wedge set?
Nah, not at all. The original Abzan was white focused, and while some people got annoyed with it at the time because it wasn't what they wanted from a wedge set, there was nothing mechanically unbalancing in it. Personally I think it'd be interesting.

I cannot otherwise understand why they needed to make them both incredibly brittle, ...

Re: Is Oathbreaker Already a Dead Format?
I feel they picked a super weird time to make oathbreaker an official format as it's popularity peeked several years ago at this point and I don't know if I ever heard of people playing it at stores at an official level Maybe I'm cynical, but my bet is that Studio X had a fight with the RC over wan...

Ah yes, the secret group hug card that only helps a random opponent who is playing a deck even more graveyardy than yours. I've generally seen this paired with effective gravehate, general graveyard abuse (think Rise of the Dark Realms) or played for a combo the same turn. Just dropping it for incr...
