Re: Baldur's Gate review - what do you think?
I don't like Initiative for constructed play but it was fun in draft. I don't like venture/dungeons either though and Initiative avoided my worst fear for the set: a new dungeon accessible to all existing Venture cards, moving it much further into wish territory (cue Legend rant), The ancient metal ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Find better bait dude.
Anyway, I just hope this lowers the prices on Phyrexian Altar, that card had gotten entirely too expensive. The set as a whole continues to be far too high-variance for me to want any packs.

Re: Erinis: Scrappy Street Justice
I'm a bit leery of deathtouch machine gun decks, having built Judith very similarly. Even if you power the deck so as not to immediately lock out opponents' creatures, the recursion inherent to aristocrat-adjacent decks like this means you'll often be one of the first to bounce back after a wrath. I...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
At least the Initiative dungeon is pretty relevant as a game object. It'll make interesting things happen as long as exists, if nothing else giving some people free cards and changing the rationale for attacks. My pet peeve coming out of innistrad is all the incidental Day/Night cards. I have no pro...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread
Unfortunately, the discourse surrounding EDH is largely a dumpster fire. 75%? Optimized? Jank? It's all vague and ambiguously defined to the point it renders power level discussion meaningless. Does it need to be meaningful? It only matters for the people you're actually sitting down to play with; ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Can anyone tell me why Unwinding Clock is now a $30 card? I went to go and try and order it and was taken aback at how ridiculous the price has gotten. People increasingly want to play reactively, and this is one of the few nongreen cards that lets people do that without being choked on mana. Direl...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
I love that they're dialing back the powerlevel. This is the first direct-to-eternal booster set that hasn't printed something I dread. If it's not for you, well, they're printing a tonne of sets. Personally, I see some real solid commons and uncommons that I'd love to pick up. Don't you prefer this...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
The fact that an uncommon has you comparing it to a playable rare says something about the uncommon. Absolutely. If it wasn't clear by the rest of my post, I love the workmanlike, multifunctional commons and uncommons as fair, affordable cards that fill utility slots well. This card is just below t...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Somewhat disappointed Ghost Lantern doesn't give a counter whenever any creature dies. I don't think it would be OP, the color restriction and lack of tribal bonus probably balance out the bad Corpse Churn when compared to Blade of the Bloodchief , and it would have been a slam dunk in Syrix replaci...

Another flicker spell for Feather. I'd run just the adventure of this tbh, the rest is gravy.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
I don't think Pact Weapon is great, but I think that "you don't lose" line is nearly trinket text. It's a big voltron-y equipment that doesn't take mana to equip, and if your deck wants that, it's fine. It's gonna probably be card-neutral, which already puts it way above most big voltron-y...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Cartographer's Survey
It's an interesting idea, but mana fixing and ramp is one of the areas defined by trying to reduce variance, so a card that has variance as a drawback is gonna be fundamentally unattractive. Same reason some groups I've seen that are incredibly anti-tutor are still fine with cards that tutor land fo...

Re: Should cEDH spin off into its own format?
Huh, I remember the last time we had this thread, Dirk was saying my experience actually seeing cEDH pods running at local stores, and playing casual with some people from them was irrelevant compared to his own knowledge. I've seen one pubstomper who was too bad at managing his lifetotal to actuall...

Re: Syrix: Dark Phoenix
Any discard outlets that you've found particularly potent beyond Tortured Existence and Undertaker? I was worried that Skirge Familiar, which was in my maybeboard, was a bit too cludgy. Skirge is too expensive for this. I like real cheap effects so I can get something in the bin before casting Syri...

Re: Should cEDH spin off into its own format?
I know that's not most of the cEDH crowd, but damn are the competitive supremacists loud and annoying to deal with. Maybe the explicit acknowledgement of cEDH could also help cEDH proponents deal with any obnoxious casual supremacists, who I haven't run into that I know of, but who I'm sure exist. ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Cultist of the Absolute I'm not so sure about. Seems good to give +3/+3, flying, and ward to Tymna, and sacrificing creatures like Arena Rector , Academy Rector , or an ETB creature I can get back with Ravos seems good, but most of my creatures I don't want to sacrifice. That's the card that had my...

Re: Syrix: Dark Phoenix
Nice to see someone else building Syrix! One of the things I've found playing mine is that discard outlets are generally much better than sac outlets for this deck, because most of the creatures you want to loop are expensive, only recur to hand and/or don't care how they get to your graveyard. Rela...

Re: Should cEDH spin off into its own format?
I think, in addition to the previously stated benefits, that splitting the format will also make it harder for WotC to exploit. The more the philosophies, banlists and metagames diverge, the harder it is to make a ThOracle-like card that becomes a problem in both at once (for what it's worth, I only...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
I think the kind of decks that want BftBG also want ways to fill their graveyard, but it's not the staple some are making it out to be beyond graveyardy rakdos decks.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread
Maybe the weird NFT collectors are bringing their weird NFT collector logic to MtG after the NFT market fell over. This feels as though a couple people who don't quite understand how Magic works as a game have decided to run a pump-and-dump, or two stores' algorithms are hitting on each other. How r...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread
We are too complicated to be summed up, but I still maintain that this particular discussion is harmless. It can be a good way to start a conversation, I agree. But Goose and I chimed it when it had become the conversation. At that point it's phatic at best. At worst these sort of fantastical-reduc...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread
Glad it turned out for the best! Regarding the color pie thing, I'm with Goose. It can be fun to do if you silo the conclusions into a mental %$#% folder, but seriously building philosophy or self-concept on fundamentally unserious foundations is a road that ends in those people who vote based on Ho...
