Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

@Tomatotime Yes to all of that. I tried to express a similar sentiment earlier in this thread about whether or not Modern was becoming a sort of "new Legacy." In that case Modern would be a format where there are massively powerful decks that many average players would consider unfun/unfa...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Going forward in terms of Modern, the player base will have to (if it even can) come to a consensus about what standard of play we should even be pushing for in Modern and sculpting the format towards. There appears to be an identity crisis that has been occurring in Modern this entire time albeit p...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

I can't emphasize enough that the community conversation must shift away from bans and towards the abject failures of design, development, and Play Design this year. I get that people want Modern (Standard, Pioneer, Legacy...) to be "fixed" and that might mean a number of bans on 2019 car...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Dark times for modern, sadly. Urza decks ~ 30% of the metagame across 4 different variations and big mana ~25%? So, if one wont play an urza deck(this should be a mistake), he should play big mana. Midrange at 10% on a GDS deck that received many powerful tools and happens to beat the deck to beat....

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

But this is not what we need. I don't want another 1-2 years full of fun and then nothing or nothing playable anymore. Give me a little bit less fun, but give it forever to me. Okay but it doesn't matter if that is the concession you want to make if the other people at your LGS aren't willing to. A...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Yeah, yugioh style. Hey, we generate 2452 mistakes, sell cards and after we Bann them and community is happy. What you think happened with yugioh and this strategy? By the way, they still don't ban. Veil and leyline instead of nykthos, because they need it on theros. Yeah, seems great and carefully...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

I do understand that without continued support, Modern will fade sometime in the future. What I fail to understand however is, what gives people the confidence that WOTC will manage Pioneer better than how they managed Modern over the last 12 months? Are the people managing Pioneer not the same peo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Modern was and maybe still is the most popular constructed format. But if we want this format to survive and still be popular, 'acceptable' is not good enough, not when Pioneer is vastly more accessible and looks to be more enjoyable. Why would anyone pay top dollar to play an 'acceptable' format w...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Just because WOTC wants your money doesn't mean they care about supporting a format. I think this is something that is going to take people a while to figure out. There is a fundamental difference between monetizing a format and actually supporting it. It is kind of rich how Wotc will put out a set...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

How it can't be same degenerate soon, if cards like oko and once upon and green leyline.... Are printed? It feels like a joke to me when powerlevel rise 100% and same time people think Pioneer will be fair and they don't make mistakes like in modern. This format will not survive half of time modern...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Guys, it is the same modern 2 months ago. Pioneer has even half of same pool of modern. In 6 months people sucked playing Pioneer too and they realize this is our game, no matter if Pioneer, modern or legacy. I don't understand why some less time ago people talked about the most loved and played fo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

not referring to anyone in particular.. but there's so much ban mania it almost feels like satire. It is inevitable, and as Pioneer events start taking off the ban mania in Modern will escalate in response. This is because in Standard and Pioneer, it is well accepted that bans improve gameplay for ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

This weekend Dutch Open Series hosted the first Pioneer event. Around 80 people showed up. Modern had 120 people while they used to have 200+. Around 70 people attended Legacy, more than usual. I saw a lot of people who used to play Modern make the switch to Pioneer, also some made the switch to Le...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Modern didn't get to this sorry state overnight, it took years of banlist mismanagement and cards printed that support degenerate, non interactive strategies (looting, hogaak, etc). CAN wotc even fix this mess now? Honestly I would say no, easily. The amount of drastic action that would be required...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

1st. If Twin policed nothing, then it REALLY didnt need a ban. 2nd. Twin absolutely did have a limiting impact on Tron. It also, in combination with BGx, was able to keep the creature based decks from taking over, as we saw Humans/Spirits/Mardu do for a period. Twin policed plenty of decks, before ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Thanks, that's what I suspected. To me, this sounds like a revisionist reading of history. Just because no broken deck emerged in modern for some time does not mean these two decks were successfully policing anything. They would not have prevented eldrazi winter, tron, hogaak, or anything. I agree,...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

I don't know if having format police is necessarily even a positive goal for us to strive towards in terms of Modern. I think the main flaw in the logic of format police is that it basically says that an arbitrary selection of decks is considered above the law so to speak and are treated as sacred c...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 08/26/2019)

On the other hand, Wizards has done a terrible job at managing unbans. Many unbans could have happened years earlier and I'm sure there are still cards on the list that would be totally fine. Well okay, what do you think Wotc could unban that would actually make Modern less of a gold fish combo bas...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 08/26/2019)

As for decks like Tron and Lantern Control, I don't know why you think Pioneer will ban so-called "unfun" decks like those. By all measures, Pioneer so far appears to just be building off Modern ban lessons (Felidar and Twin, Oath and Ponder/Preordain, Leyline and free things/rituals). Th...
