Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Blame Wizards for that. Look at the past 12 months: 7 Modern bans 25 Non-Pioneer bans 34 Total bans Maybe they should stop printing stupid, busted, powerful things. I could also extrapolate this to show justification in Wotc putting more attention into Modern in terms of banning to get it's gamepla...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

So we went from allegedly banning around Opal, to banning around Urza? I was never one for sacred cows, Mox Opal being gone is fine by me and as may be shown, artifact decks still have legs without it (or at least Urza does). Bridge is fine. If you ban Bridge, then you must also ban other prison/lo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

In my opinion, declawing Urza would require 2 main things: 1. Banning Ensnaring Bridge, this card has been a thorn in Modern's side for too long as it is, banning it would be great all around. 2. Banning Thopter Foundry/Sword of the Meek - breaking up the thopter sword combo seems critical at this p...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

I fully agree Wizards has been opaque, vague, and dismissive about the significant design failures of 2019. This includes Oko. Compare and contrast the apologetic and transparent article about Skullclamp's failures with the corporate platitudes of Oko's: 2004: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

MTG arena just removed Historic ranked and continues to charge money for brawl as well. Even if Modern or Pioneer gets on this platform, wizards continues to show all they actually care about is standard. They literally punish people who make decks for this format by limiting when you can play thes...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

It would be pretty tragic if after all this effort to get bans made, Urza decks simply slot in Mox Amber to keep their gold fish, or for that manner, I wonder if Mox Tantalite will ever come into the Modern meta.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Like. what has changed? What new decks are going to flourish as a result? If anything, the only thing I am remotely excited about is Heliod/Ballista Twin. Maybe that's a reason to invest in Bant stuff, because that might not be a terrible package... assuming it doesn't get banned. I think what has ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

Never wrote something but a fiery reader. For me this ban mania Is and Will Always be the true cancer of Modern. There Will Always be a top deck. There Will Always be a deck that eveyone hates. Modern had the oportunity to create a rotation through meta. It had the opportunity to play the deck you ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

f Jund, Burn, Affinity, Storm, Elves, Pod, Twin, Tron was miserable, then yes, Modern was miserable and you should never have invested in it in the first place. 2015 Modern was the best format this game has had in the last decade, easily. I never said Jund was miserable, I never said Elves was mise...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

Not the first time, but I think this is a dangerous road to go down. They are offering up the potential to erase the identity of the format, and again, for what? So we can play some older cards? I'm fine with this approach in Pioneer, as it does not have an identity, but I'm a fan of DECKS. Modern ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

Also let me point out probably the most critical piece of the B&R: "While the primary motivation for this last change is the unfun play pattern, we also intend for this to be a small but meaningful balance change to Eldrazi and other Tron decks. We feel this is warranted based on the popula...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

Well they banned more than I honestly thought they would, I didn't think they would have the spine to get rid of Opal but they showed they got some guts at least, this is one fewer monkey the format will have riding its back until the end of time which is a load off on some level. At this point the ...

Paul is definitely not a good game developer. Melissa I'm unsure on, You're mixing being good at playing a game with being good at making that game. To add my 2 cents, Melissa was a part of the M25 set team which was widely acknowledged as a complete botch job, taking that as well as her Play Desig...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

They can, but they clearly dont. Or, even if they do, its just ban after ban after ban, which is terrible for everyone. Firstly, again, I fully acknowledge that Wotc is incompetent. Secondly, ban after ban after ban is not terrible for everyone, it is required (for eternal formats) to actually main...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

Comically enough, 'fun' is not objective. That doesn't matter, it is required for a game to be successful. There is a pattern here though, I will admit to that, and I would propose that if you are the type who would like to play Control or even Midrange, you are going to like the London Mulligan le...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

The point is, why favor it even more? Games lost to mull to the abyss ~= games lost to your opponent having the nuts. Because it is a game, going through the actual motions to play the game is better than mulliganing to 4-5 and just sighing in discontent and signing the slip. If Tron is nerfed, the...

There is, but when you can mull towards a hand you want, especially if you dont care if you have 7 cards. Anything that outright favors linear play, should be gone.
Modern as a format already favored linear play long before the London Mulligan even existed so I'm not sure what the point is.

I'll forever hate the London Mull. You want to craft your hand? Play Blue like the game was intended.
There is a disctinction to be drawn between crafting your hand, and simply having a higher chance of starting a game with something you can actually play Magic: The Gathering(tm) with.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I already thought about Astrolabe and I have to agree with Aazadan. If Urza and Oko get banned and Tron receives a significant nerf I already know which deck will rise to the top: 4c Astrolabe+W6 control. W6 alone is enough to bury any opposing midrange deck in CA while also shutting down any x/1 c...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

If, post Monday, all Tron pieces, (including Lattice, which I mainly aim for, wish it was expo map) are legal we should stop trying to change this, we should accept that Modern's identity is this format where a ton of 2-5% degen, uninteractive decks, collectively, each one at a small rate. Ya I agr...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I personally think Urza, Oko, Veil banned and an unban to be a really big change for the format(close to an overhaul). I hope Monday will see to something similar to this. The thing is the above is not actually a format overhaul, all it would do is undo SOME of the 2019 damage, it wouldn't even aff...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

This is why I think we need a reset of the ban list. Make it all legal (with the possible exception of cards that create non deterministic combos, because they provide inaccurate MTGO results), and then rapidly iterate on the ban list like was done with Pioneer. In theory this should better create ...

Thats exactly my point. You cannot cast your gaze back to when Jace was unbanned, look at the meta, and say 'hell no, Jace is too good!' Just as we cannot look to the future and say 'well in this future SFM is too good, and must remain banned.' The difference is that Jace and SFM were never legal i...

es we can. People thought AV and ThopterSword was too strong to come off. People thought GGT was too Strong. It took like 6 new cards to break dredge. People though Jace would break Modern. People CONTINUED to argue SFM was too Strong. Your opinion on the 'wisdom' of the community is far higher tha...
