Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

Yeah, that's fair. It's only ever going to give you value from play. I think it's easy enough to include and just not play when it's not advantageous, that's where I'm landing at least. I'm not too worried about it's place in the curve, I've gone as low as I can reasonably justify currently. I do ha...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

They're definitely not going to be a land you want to see in your starting hand I think this is incorrect. They're great as a virtual 1-drop in almost every opening hand sequence. Some of our decks are thinking about playing Diregraf Ghoul for another 1 drop, playing one surveil land splits the dif...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

I think they're ok. Surveil is clearly great for us, but entering tapped isn't. They're definitely not going to be a land you want to see in your starting hand, which makes them a value play for Coffers or Field, and a Land Tax drop. I don't know if that's worth it personally. I certainly wouldn't r...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Airplane! meanwhile, leans much more heavily on wordplay and puns. Neither option is better but adds to my opinion that these movies aren't really comparable outside of both being relatively old comedies. Yeah someone said they were both Mel Brooks films a little while back in the thread, and they'...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

for example I have yet to figure out why people enjoy The Big Bang Theory, Friends, or The Office) The latter I can speak to, at least the british version. I haven't seen the American, and while I appreciate the writers and what they went on to, the british version is it for me. Anyway, it's meant ...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I think a factor in this was covid as well. Been talking with a friend on tv shows and its kinda jarring when you hit the covid seasons and seeing how the production of the show had to change around, stuff like how actors wouldn't get as close to each other in scenes or the lack of extras in what w...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Okay so does anyone remember how, four months ago when the Doctor Who commander set came out (it was only 4 months? Geez it feels like forever), I was pretty negative about the show? Well, I've now watched series 1-12 of the new show, every episode, plus a couple episodes of the old show, just so I...

Re: The One Ring

For what it's worth I'm still not quite on the ban hammer for this. It's very, very strong, but I just haven't seen it at a casual level, and I think I would be throwing eyebrows at anyone who argued it was in the right place in that scene. I think if we're comparing it to Paradox Engine , which ta...

I'll get the showcase stuff I think is pretty and comparable in price. I don't regret my foil showcase Birgi, God of Storytelling // Harnfel, Horn of Bounty by any stretch. It's a delight to look at.

Re: The One Ring

More than anything im impressed sun titan sees cedh play It doesn't that I'm aware of, but it probably only really needs the right commander to be printed. Something staxy that likes to beat in or what have you. Sevinne's Reclamation is all over the place though, big player in Mardu and Jeskai brea...

I think he could be a very sweet card in the right place, it's just that's a very specific place.
I read your GBU for the set and know you're not fond of this commander, but Ellivere of the Wild Court says hi.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

So, hilarious anecdote and possible scathing indictment of the myriad printings for each set we currently see. I'm about to drop into my LGS and just registering some cards for trade to offset the credit. One of them is Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider , the nonfoil basic %$#% version. Because no one can...

Somebody was moaning about having to mull 4 times in a game. Here is a direct quote: "Ug, I run 34 lands, how can I only draw 2 landers?" Dude, your EV is 2.4 lands in a starting hand, the odds of you drawing a 2 lander 3 times in a row is ~10% XD run more lands folks. The other side of t...

Having to euthanize our third senior dog in two years. It never gets easier. Ah that's awful. Losing a pet is hard, that's chosen family. Which in a big way is more meaningful, at least to me. It's even harder having to make that decision, too. We had a cat run down in front of myself and my then 1...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

I do like Get Lost. It's much more of a tempo change than a lot of other removal, most decks can't make use of a tapped Map token right away, and it's quite well costed.

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

Yeah, Toxrill, the Corrosive seems pretty toxic for this deck. I can only imagine if the slug hangs on for anything more than a turn cycle or two we are just s'd in the b. Thanks for reminding me of needing Altar of Dementia in here. Pretty sure I've got a copy floating around, I think it'll put in ...

Yeah, these two responses are pretty much on the money. A lot of getting blown out by a bog is overcommitting to your yard. We can't help it to some degree, our commander loots. But Bog and Deathrite Shaman and Rest in Peace and all that stuff is usually sandbagged until your opponents think it's 'w...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

What is your opinion on Soul Enervation . I think it might be worth a try at least. Although it is a little too high on the mana cost. This is probably better for Mono- B or Dimir. We have, it seems to me, sufficient low-cost pingers. Agreed with pzbw7z here, sadly. I think this is most likely to b...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

Welcome back pokken! Hope your hiatus treated you well. I believe you're right. The way the card is worded is specific to the creatures in your graveyard as it resolves, so presumably new creatures, or new instances of the same creatures, would not have the same ability. It's a shame, but I guess I ...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

What do you guys think of Case Of the Uneaten Feast ? Seems like at least on par with Liliana, Untouched by Death to me. Less to pay up front, we can almost certainly solve it right away, the only real issue the solve trigger resolving at beginning of end step. At that point you can activate the enc...

Re: Should I Rebuild Meren, or Something Else?

You could try Tayam, Luminous Enigma ? It's a pretty bizarre deck, but it's VERY resilient and grindy, plays a lot in the same sort of space as Meren, but maybe with a little more potential for variety. Tayam works at most sort of power levels, so you don't need to feel like you're spiking out if yo...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Afaik outside of cEDH combo with time sifter he's not that strong. The cedh meta is adapting to him, but he was dominant for quite a good while there. His draw is that he refunds most of his cost in treasure, is an A+B combo in the command zone, and is a flying 6/6 beater with ward 3, which is not ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I think white has gotten a lot of strong and interesting support cards recently - Serra Paragon , Ao, the Dawn Sky , and Halo Fountain all come to mind. If I have one complaint, it is that it feels like WotC hasn't figured out any staple designs yet. Most white cards that play around in this space ...

Yeah, I think this kind of fits better than most of the lords you could run, as well as Coat of Arms. You could even play around it for your off turns with Rhystic and Mystic if you so chose.

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

Yeah this is for sure playable. Not sure what it swaps out for yet myself, but it's definitely worth a try. Universal Automaton stays for me, just on account of being a combo piece with Liliana, Untouched by Death . Also, I totally did not click Mists of Lórien was a sorcery. Makes it a ton less des...
