Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
There's some noise that the translation on Splendid Ultimatum might be off, and that it says something along the lines of "Deal 5 damage to up to one creature, up to one planeswalker, and up to one player". Definitely adds some upside to it, on top of drawing the 5 cards.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
The mana empties between phases, so you'd still need another wubrg to restart the combo, so you're not actually getting anything "extra" out of the combo. I didn't say you get extra mana afterwards. My point is that, with zegantha only, you get unlimited attack steps but zegantha remains ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
But of note, if you have any mana creature like a Birds of Paradise (just need to attack with the Bird initially), you can get infinite mana in your combat phase. It's even better than that - with infinite mana you can eventually stop using zegantha to activate najeela, just use the floating birds ...

Re: Zirda, the Dawnwaker (Let's Brew!)
Samut Loam deck? Oops all lands? How does it work with equipment equip-cost-reducing cards? Null Rod prevents equipping, so sure is an activated cost to equip. If the full text of Equip was written out on cards then they read as for example for Equip 3: Equip 3 ( 3 : Attach to target creature you c...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
That makes a lot more sense, so rather than a 2 card combo, it is more like a 3 or 4 card combo. Not nearly as scary as some other cards. I mean all you need is a goblin fireslinger to win the game. It's 3 cards but 2 of them are in the CZ and the third is (pick one of countless options). All you n...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Kaheera is the first Companion of real interest - she'd be playable in the 99 of Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist but I'm also 99% sure the deck needs to make zero or close to zero changes to just run her in the Companion slot instead. Although question - how do changelings like Mirror Entity interact w...

Re: [IKO] Ikoria Name and Number Crunch
This has now got me wondering on last 2 mythics. Once again there will be no balance either way. Either we the last of the cycle (legendary blue and green and legendary white and red mythic) and no blue mythic. Or we get a blue mythic and we don't finish the cycle. The only balance I can see is if ...

Re: [IKO] Naraset of the ancient Way
I was wondering if the Narset on Channeled Force looking like a 40-45yo lady was just a fluke, but with this getting spoiled today, I realized that the events in War of the Saprk didn't really agree with her skin complexion... I mean... Compare her with Narset, Parter of Veils or Narset's Reversal ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
I cannot view the article as I'm at work, but I'm going to assume it doesn't allow you to mutate for free so that lower's it's power a bit for the specific deck I'm thinking. It just says cast, so I'd assume alternate casting costs (as opposed to additional costs like kicker) would work with it. Th...
Re: New set
I was talking to one of my friends online about the Mutate mechanic from Ikoria as well as the new set in general and he told me that the new mechanic isn't as confusing as people are making it out to be it's just that they need to improve their reading level. He compared it more toward Evolve thou...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Best use of Jegantha uses I can see are: najeela, the blade-blossom . infinite combat steps. Yikes. That seems potentially pretty busted. At least you have to put your cards on the table right away. How does this go infinite? Najeela untaps creatures that are attacking, Jegantha has to tap to make ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
"Put those" makes me think I am moving them from one place to another. Reminds me of the "partner with" reminder text, of which I'm still not a big fan. I guess that answers my undying/persist question, though! 90% of the time, if you think it moves the counters off the old card...

Re: Best targets for Mutate?
DISCLAIMER: As of now, no official rules interactions have been posted for mutate, so an official ruling is not possible. However, based on what we've seen so far and the nature of the cards you mentioned, we can guesstimate. Mutate applies on the battlefield but when changing zones the cards separ...

Re: Otrimi, the Ever-Playful (Let's Brew)
Say you put otrimi on the bottom of a regal behemoth or something, then clone it, it's another regal behemoth that has otrimi's text? Yeah, it works this way Building on this, if you're already planning on running a bunch of the non-legendary mutators, you can use that combination to put the mutate...

Re: Otrimi, the Ever-Playful (Let's Brew)
My 8yo son has decided that otrimi is the pre con he wants, and I've been trying to warn him it won't be nearly as straight forward as the gishath deck I built him. Well, it will be a chance for him to least about x for 1s I suppose. I agree with darren about the need for bounce to mutate as much a...
Re: New set
I don't think mutate is all that complicated. Let's say you have a Wind Drake on the battlefield. Current creature: 2/2 with flying. In your hand, you have a card with mutate, Say a Pouncing Shoreshark , now you have two options, you can either play the card normally, and get an extra creature, or ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Lurrus of the Dream-Den is adorable. I'll need to wait for the full companion-in-commander rules to be revealed before I render judgment though - I think it was said that the commander counts, but not entirely sure. In which case Teysa would unfortunately be immediately disqualified. Even if that d...

Re: Best targets for Mutate?
I'm starting to think.... Mutate's biggest weakness will be removal. The bigger the mutate stack, the more vulnerable you get. According to the article on the Mothership today , this is not the case. Mark stated the following: Let's assume this scares your opponent, and they cast a black kill spell...

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned
I can't for the life of me figure out why WotC didn't have companions hang out in the command zone before they are cast. The command zone already exists in every format, because that's where emblems go. The biggest drawback would be that it could create confusion about which creature is your comman...
Re: New set
To be honest, and as I already stated, I don't feel knowing these interactions for Standard really matters. As you rightly pointed out, there are very few of these things that will pop up there. What does matter is Commander (and other "casual" games). These things absolutely will come up...
Re: New set
This was the point of this exercise though. The number of weird corner cases are plentiful and there are even more on Eli's Twitter so not all are completely intuitive without more than a base level of understanding of the rules (or memorization of all the different answers given). The flip side is...

Re: Tayam, Luminous Enigma (Let's brew!)
If you're already planning on running Saga's , it might be worth poking at enchantment animation effects, such as Starfield of Nyx or Opalescence. If you can make your Saga's into creatures, you can make them repeatable with Tayam's abilities, which feels like it should be fairly strong.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
The mardu one...well, it's late and I'm tired, so maybe I'm missing something, but it looks incredibly bad. You don't even get a starter human so you need to make an attack first without protection. I guess if you're playing a bunch of other humans it's kiiiind of ok? But yeah I could see cutting b...
