Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Koma, Cosmos Serpent

I'm not a fan of this card. It's a big, splashy sea monster that appeals to Timmy but plays oppressively. But at least it's no Aesi.

Re: Aftermath commander roundup

Set boosters are pretty sweet, they're value tends to be way over a draft boosters because your more likely to get multiple rares plus alt art %$#%. Definitely worth it if you just feel like cracking packs. Both products serve different purposes. It also opens up space to not follow the rarity rules...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Priest of Forgotten Gods

It's good. In a 4 player pod, if everyone has a creature out, you trade 2 creatures to take out 3 creatures, draw a card, add BB, and bleed your opponents for 2. That's a 4 for 2 that also adds mana and attacks life totals, and the 2 "cards" you go down are probably less valuable than the ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Xanthic Statue

New creature Karn ramps it out then gets boosted by it's high CMC, and it has a Karn quote, so Karn tribal.

Not everything has to be good to have a home. Sometimes Karn just needs to get +3/+3 from remembering that birds %$#% on him.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Backdraft Hellkite

It's really not a heavy lift to give this haste. Your obviously already leveraging your graveyard, so you might as well have Anger in the deck giving everything haste, while lightning greaves and swiftfoot boots are still staples. I feel like the bigger problem is that haste isn't going to help you ...

Karn can't actually ramp out Eldrazi, his mana can only be used on artifact spells.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Hushbringer

I think it's a lot better in something like hate bears than actual stax. I also don't think it should push you off of running the effects yourself either. It's an answer, and one that should stay in your hand until you need to deploy it (because it's clear Brago is about to snowball, for instance). ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Hushbringer

Excellent card. It has a leg up on similar cards because it stops death triggers as well, so it nails TWO archetypes

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - The Epic Cycle

Swarm: 8mana for a bunch of snakes kinda sucks, since your aren't going to be able to leverage it very well and can easily be blown out. You can set it up with Cathar's Crusade or a sac outlet or Purphoros ahead of time to make use of all the snakes, but it's extremely easy for a single spell to wip...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Endless Detour

Its 3 mana though, of 3 different colors, for at best the same effect as Memory Lapse. Yes, flexibility has a cost, but the cost is too damn high. Memory Lapse is a good not great card that is, as you said, typically ran when you're already deep into counter magic and can reliably use it to buy a tu...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Endless Detour

I loathe this effect generally. Giving the opponent the choice of putting it on the top or bottom makes them crappy, and unfortunately they are typically way overcosted. Doing one or the other, or being able to choose for yourself, is great. Putting it on the bottom is basically exiling it, while pu...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Pain Distributor

Only worth it if you can break symmetry. Paying 1 life to add one mana of any color is a deal most people would take, repeatedly, if they had the choice and the "victims" of this card will nearly always wish they could trade away more life for more treasures. Group hug is always risky, but...

Re: Have cheap +1 CA draw spells really "aged out" of the format?

Explosive vegetation always felt like a bad Skyshroud Claim even back in the day, unless you ran it solely for budget reasons. It was 4 mana to go up a card, and speed up 2 lands, but being limited to basics and being slow always hurt it. Kodama's Reach and Cultivate were better most of the time, an...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Brightflame

When this was printed, before Blas. Act and others, and life gain was overall a better way to slow down combat decks (no Craterhoof), this card was actually pretty good. I didn't play against it much, but it was a respectable wipe at the time. Power creep makes this look a bit sad, but it had it's ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Brightflame

Such a cool card, but also terrible. The promise is one sided mass.removal that gains you a buttload of life, but the reality is unreliable mass removal that usually won't do enough and often will splash back on you, all for way too much mana.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Phyrexian Arena

Phyrexian Arena: Once a staple, now a valid budget option for a control deck. How many cards will you draw off this? If you get three more upkeeps, it's a draw 3 for 3 which would be a solid spell, but spread out over there turns it's just meh in today's environment. Because you have to wait for the...

Re: Sword of Once and Future

I see the first ability as the main attraction and the second as gravy that is enabled by the first. The second ability makes running a lot of cheap card draw, especially cheap looting effects, better by making them freely reusable. The surveil is where the action is though, as both card selection a...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - The KTK Elder Dragons

You mean DTK. These are all really generically solid. Silumgur is Sower of Temptation but for 2 mana more, and it steals planeswalkers, and it has a relevant body that is harder to kill. Sower was once a staple, and while that time has passed and Silumgur will never reach the same levels it's a nice...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Shriekmaw

It still serves a purpose on occasion. It's actually relevant to hard cast it from time to time, but the main draw is that it's a 2 mana kill spell that can be rezzed for another go. It's particularly nice in decks that care about creatures dying, since you get a death trigger on top of your kill sp...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Sphinx Ambassador

Distract your opponents with awkwardly large winged kitty titties. Even more than it being a big Timmy card with a splashy effect that will die to doom blade, the blue cleavage is what shows this card's age. I feel like back in the day pretty much everything aimed at nerds tried to throw in some fan...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Tendershoot Dryad

Kill on sight, those tokens add up quick. Your opponents untapping with this risks them dropping Hoof and giving them all +5/+5 and trample, and that's if you have nothing else and they somehow don't get city's blessing. Pooping out a creature a turn also triggers and enables sooo much, from sac eff...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants

3 lifelinking 1/1s every upkeep is pretty nice, that provides a lot of utility and makes the ultimate useful in numerous decks, though useful it different ways. That's three white critters for Teysa to sacrifice to exile a creature every turn, 3 etb triggers a turn, a minimum of 3 lifegain triggers ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Shriveling Rot

Its a nasty card in sacrifice decks when you can sac a bunch of tokens while you have grave pact or Dictate of Erebos. Having this dome all your opponents for around 20 while you take like 6 shouldn't be that hard, but the question is how much is that worth? Generally such decks are going to have wa...
