Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Mage's Contest

Monday, November 18th, 2019; Mages' Contest mages' contest You gotta ask yourself, do ya feel lucky, punk? Do ya? Did I fire seven shots, or just one? I just want this card in a modern frame honestly. Such a cool effect. I'd rather have special edition prints of modern cards I old frames. Old frame...

Re: Alternative card counts - 60, 80

Well, it seems like it would be a lot more consistent and leave room for fewer oddball cards. It would increase the value of having a strong commander because its easier to find the support cards for it. If a less random, more streamlined format is what your going for, its a great idea. Otherwise, i...

An underplayed all star. Remember, they can attack, so sometimes you can curve them into a sword and attacking turn 3.

Re: How would a commander with adventure work?

You have the choice to send your commander back to the command zone when it would change zones. Therefore if you cast it for its adventure, when the adventure resolves you would have the choice to put it into exile or back into the command zone. The same principle that applies if your commander get...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Bind

The fetchland thing is a good enough fail state (just like shadow of a doubt) because the cantrip makes it worth it in multiplayer, but not enough to justify this. This is another meta dependent card for when your facing lots of important activated abilities. It stops a number of combos for the turn...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Gemstone Mine

I always love these things when I play with Thawing Glaciers .If you're spending a wasteland on these over a Cradle. Maze, or Volrath's Stronghold, you probably could do with another semester's worth of threat assessment class. Or you just don't have them in your meta, or have land recursion. I don...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Gemstone Mine

I used to see this all the time, back when Rav bounces were more common. In practice, it didn't usually go the the graveyard and stay there. Either it got bounced and replayed or it got recurred from the yard. It's a classic, but nowadays it should be relegated to certain decks, specifically prolife...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Rhystic Tutour

The problem, as has been stated, is that there are too many tutors that are far better that you can use for 3 mana or less even in the decks that this is actually good (and it is actually good in stax/land denial when that 2 mana is hard to come by). Many of these, however, are also really expensive...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Smokestack

Again, similar cards that play in the same design space, but different on several levels. On a meta level about the thread, Im not sure how I feel about this. Yesterday the cards were significantly different to the point that they really should not have been posted together. At most mental and spell...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Mental Misstep

This is really 4 cards that are only semi related. Each could have their own discussion day. Especially Disdainful Stroke, which in lower power metas counters most things. It's basically a catch all hard counter for big threats. It hits most finishers, many combo pieces, and lots of mass answers. It...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Roil Elemental

Very swingy but needs either reliable protection or a cheap, preferably free, sac outlet. Getting this bolted doesn't feel as bad when you can just feed all the stolen creatures to goblin bombardment or Sadistic Hypnotist before you lose them.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Wash Out

Less fun and more dangerous with painters servant. You really have to be floating Mana to land threats after it resolves or your just doing an annoying reset.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Ash Barrens

EDIT: If they ever banned tutoring, which I hope they do, this card is the only one I would miss. Cards like this (tutoring for basic lands or basic land types) aren't really in the same category as Demonic Tutor , Vampiric Tutor , and friends. Neither is Diabolic Tutor or Beseech the Queen or &quo...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Ash Barrens

It's a great card. If you run basics in two or more colors, it fixes your Mana when you need it to and enters untapped when you don't. It's on par with the new super evolving wilda that gets you the basic untapped when you have 4 or more lands. There's going to be times you use the latter to get an ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Zuran Orb

The orb and claws are pretty different. The orb being entirely free makes it more powerful in decks that want to sac lands and gives it combo potential. The claws costing 1 per activation are pretty weak there by comparison. But the claws are unique in being an all purpose repeatable sac outlet that...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Dig Through Time

Dig is great. One huge thing I haven't seen discussed much is that it's still really good when you don't do the full delve. Even delving a few cards makes it worthwhile since you don't need to fire it off until your last opponents end step, so you can keep that Mana open for other things and just po...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - AEther Vial

In the right deck its insane value. I like it because it's a KOS very powerful play that isn't an auto include. Many decks cannot make effective use of it, but it's great at supporting low curve creature decks and giving them that extra push. It's more swingy, but less reliable, when you use it as a...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Abzan Charm

Conditional removal for 3 mana, an instant speed sign in blood for 3 mana, and a weak pump spell for 3 mana. None of these are worth it on their own, but the first two as options get it just around playable, with the last being negligible outside of certain decks. I'd pretty much only run this in de...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Jeskai Ascendancy

Hands down best of the cycle, untaps are so useful, looting is great, and it even has a built in way to win in combat. Good for your combo needs, you card draw needs, your jeskai aggro needs, just fantastic all around. Whenever I see a cycle card come up I also like to discuss the rest of the cycle ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Timetwister

Timetwister is strong enough to be an auto include, but it isn't a must include. For most blue decks, it's very good but replaceable, either with a fixed version or just another good card. Even in the decks it's best in, there are enough versions of the effect that it's not absolutely needed. That, ...

Re: Rankle, Master of Pranks - Is he the new Braids, Cabal Minion?

If by new braids you mean the new mono black stax commander of choice, yes. He's fixed braids. Drop him turn 1 off of rocks and he'll be punishing, but he won't auto win, and there are strategies that can ignore him.

Re: Underused Cards in EDH

Soul Exchange has competition from just too many better cards. Victimize costs 1 Mana more, gets twice as many creatures back, and doesn't exile so you can later get back the critter you sacrificed, making it actually good in decks like Meren that aren't just trying to reanimate something huge asap....

Re: Underused Cards in EDH

I think Act of Authority is underplayed because it came out before a lot of people were playing commander. Also, in more cutthroat metas, not being an instant hurts it. Most EDH decks aren't cutthroat though, so it's a surprise that AoA is in only 1% of all decks. True, but it still matters even in...
