Re: Ghired, Conclave Exile - Triple Dipping Naya Lards

Got some games in with some of the cards I've added. Skyhunter Strike Force was solid as a cheap Overrun. Note: since it gives melee to the creatures, so Harmonic Prodigy will double the trigger on any attacking shamans or wizards (Ghired, mostly). Outcaster Trailblazer was great! I drew it on a tur...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

Here's where I step in. Hot Take: Time Walk isn't actually a good card on it's own. It's a two mana draw a card. It gets good based on other complications on the board (combat applications, planeswalker activations, misc activated or triggered abilities) et al. Just because a card is "Power 9&...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

If you have the choice between playing something an having an opponent draw a card, or playing nothing, the latter is often not the more beneficial decision for you. Do you turn Rhystic Study into an opposing Time Walk ? The higher the power you're playing at, the riskier not paying becomes. If you...

Re: SCD: Rhystic Study

It is very, very difficult to know if you are actually increasing your odds of winning by defecting. And you shouldn't defect just to "play your cards" if it isn't actually helping you win. People have a massive bias toward taking actions in games even if it doesn't move the needle. Think...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

Regarding "draw philosophy" I care less about volume of draw and more about quality of draw. I would choose to see three and draw one over drawing two in most situations. I also consider adding a useful card (zombie, flashback spell, etc) to my grave as card advantage. Varina provides tha...

Re: [MH3] The Necrobloom - Field of the Loam

Squandered Resources / Seasons Past // Aftermath Analyst is a pretty compact combo made up of all pretty strong cards (and goes easily infinite with 7+ lands, then presumably dredges more). Although this might be a little swing for the fences :D -- but if we're avoiding instant wins, well, don't do...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

@pokken You can easily get back Gary with Chthonian Nightmare on its second cast by storing the energy. In my deck it gets back every combo piece except Gary and the Archaeomancer zombie. I think this one is a lot better than you might think. It's definitely highly playable here, but might not be t...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Journeyer's Kite

This was a near-staple alongside Mind's Eye in the dawn of Commander (I delineate here Commander from "EDH"), where it was a key way for non-green decks to hit their land drops every turn. It's not quite "strictly worse" than Thaumatic Compass // Spires of Orazca but close to it...

Re: Varina, Lich Queen - Esper Zombie Midrange

Any of you folks have a budget version of Varina? There's a weekly league that I am considering with a $150 budget cap. I was thinking Yuriko, but then thought Varina could probably get under that cap without giving up too much of the game plan. The biggest pain is losing a lot of untapped fixing, ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Journeyer's Kite

I have never felt like spending 5 to get a land was worth putting Kite in a deck. I've been tempted by Thaumatic Compass a few times, but it has never made the cut. The only decks I'd ever want to be playing that are draw-go control decks that are hungry for land drops and even they typically have b...

Re: [MH3] The Necrobloom - Field of the Loam

Can't you cycle-dredge-cycle with a single cycling land? I don't think you need 2. Discarding the land is part of the cycling cost, so by the time you get to draw a card, the land is already in the yard to dredge back out. Exactly! Add a Bone Miser for large amount of B when cycling Barren Moor The...

I have found The Meathook Massacre to be an exceptional finisher-answer for a Field deck. You can just hook for x=2 and kill everyone after attacking usually.
I'll second this. On a few occasions I've played MM to kill my own army of zombie tokens from Field or Scute Swarms in my Smeagol deck.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Vadrik, Astral Archmage

Day/night is the most tedious mechanic they've ever made and I hate, Hate, HATE it. I think they should errata the new wolves to work like the old ones. At least with the old ones I could sometimes squeeze more value out of Cult of the Waxing Moon during my opponents' turns. How is the old mechanic...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Vadrik, Astral Archmage

They should have errataed all the old werewolves to have Daybound instead of having 2 slightly different abilities that cover that same subset of cards across multiple sets. Anyway, I don't like this guy very much. It's very same-y: cast some buff spell, then cast a bunch of Ancestral Recalls, then ...

Re: Let's get ugly with Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds - curing terminal EDH brain - dedicated to my buddy 3drinks

Wouldn't it be better to drop your token producer before Ghired? It has haste and gives your other creatures the ability, so it doesn't need to sit around a turn to do something, and playing it without something to copy just seems.like you're begging for a single removal spell to wreck your tempo.

Re: making multiple monocolor decks

was building Uyo, Silent Prophet intending to play and fork a single powerful spell each turn, but a lot of those powerful spells are either board wipes or theft spells which a) makes the deck fairly modal and b) all the theft makes it feel too reminiscent of the Callaphe deck, even if I'm using no...
