Re: Wandering Into Victory - Maelstrom Wanderer Lands
Lol i swear I control f'd for time warp LOL! Happens to me all the time. Blatant Thievery is one of the ones I was trying to think of. Insurrection was the other, but that's a non-bo with the deck as it is. Probably be pretty sweet in an extra combats Voltron style build, though! ____ Updated the d...

Re: Wandering Into Victory - Maelstrom Wanderer Lands
First of all, thanks for your input. So, for most of the cards that you mention adding, they aren't in there simply because I don't currently have them and I don't normally run proxies for aesthetic reasons! However, since I'm likely to be playing this deck mostly online for the foreseeable f...

Wandering Into Victory - Maelstrom Wanderer Lands
So, I'm prototyping a bunch of Landfall/Lands decks right now because I've gotten a bug for this kind of deck and it's a good way to pass the time right now. I've got the following list inspired by pokken 's Maelstrom Wanderer Landfall deck. Commander (1) 1x Maelstrom Wanderer Land (42) 1x Alchemist...

Re: Automated Commander Power Level Evaluation
My intention with the curve multiplier is to come up with a modification for it to understand how many ramp cards you're playing and adjust the curve multiplier for that. It's just tough getting it right :) Good models that aren't over-fitted are a serious hassle for sure! Totally worth it, though....

Re: Automated Commander Power Level Evaluation
pokken - Thanks for the web interface! I've been doing a bit of monkeying around with assorted and I'm really digging how the curve multiplier works. As an example, I've got a version of your MW Landfall deck that I've been tinkering with on and off for a while that's a good 300 points weaker than ...

Re: What are your favourite mono-white and mono-blue generals?
I'd be remiss if I didn't plug Thassa as a fun mono-blue commander. There's a link to my primer in my sig. I hesitate slightly, though, since she's pricey even on her own. I'm currently brewing a Jalira, Master Polymorphist deck that could serve as a more budget alternative to the above. It's been k...

Re: Automated Commander Power Level Evaluation
Rumpy5897 and pokken - Thanks for putting your nuts and bolts conversation around the Python. As a Python neophyte who works part of their time in data analysis, it has been very enlightening! So, out of curiosity, where do we think the numbers map to a "1-10" Scale at this point? Or is i...

Re: Automated Commander Power Level Evaluation
This loops back to assessing the functional modules of each deck to get some sort of more grand vision. This is going to be the part that takes the most work, and, ultimately, where all the heavy lifting will occur. I wish I had more free time at the moment (home ownership kinda sucks, btw) because...

Re: Automated Commander Power Level Evaluation
My read on skimming your decks is that I might need to add some points for various creature tutor effects, and that animar's power level as a commander may be slightly underrated until I get the synergy data started. I didn't realize that creature tutors were missing until just now! I agree that An...

Re: First, Hit Your Land Drops (draft essay)
Unless it is core to the deck's strategy, the primary focus of a deck's mana engine should be on consistently hitting land drops. This is so very true. My Aurelia deck's "ramp" package is mostly your standard white cards that put lands in your hand and a couple of mana rocks and it does i...

Yeah, I'm really wishing I hadn't traded away my Riptide Lab when Inalla was the new hotness now. That definitely sounds like a powerful interaction. I'm definitely taking Eternal Witness under advisement! I will keep you posted with my progress.,

Re: Power creep in the command zone - interesting article
A lot of the new commanders have been 'feels bad, man' once I've played them long enough. Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer was the worst offender for me in the last year or so. I was really excited for an actual morph commander and in Sultai, but she's linear as hell. There's pretty much one build for her ...

Re: Uro, Titan who brings the Doomsday Aurora
Chain of Vapor is on my short list. Along with Rescue , oddly enough. Metamorph is a no-brainer since we've got Fabricate and Academy Ruins . I've yet to play a game with it (still waiting on some of the cards to arrive), but I've been goldfishing this more complete list compulsively, and I'm prett...

Re: What factors go into rating your deck?
In Legacy and Modern I've commonly referred to this effect as the "ships passing in the night" problem where decks feel like they're operating on axes that do not really intersect. Thank you for a concise way to describe this phenomenon! My friend has a Sultai infect/proliferate deck that...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Vanquisher's Banner
Pretty sure I'd rather have Eldrazi Monument or Gauntlet of Power. for the anthem effect for a 5 mana artifact. Evasion and mana-doubling are things I'd rather have in decks where anthems are likely to matter.

Re: Uro, Titan who brings the Doomsday Aurora
I'm so happy to have stumbled across this thread. I recently traded for an Uro to put in my Tatyova deck to provide a value engine, but I got to thinking about using Uro as a commander and my first instinct was coming up with bounce/sac engines to abuse the hell out of the ETB. Mirror of Fate came i...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Arcane Lighthouse
I think another oft-overlooked factor is how much (nonbasic) land search you have. If you're counting on drawing this naturally, then you're multiplying the unlikelihood of having it matter. Whereas if you have a nonbasic tutoring package (or, in a pinch, generic tutors), then you can search for it...

[mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Explore
People really do sleep on Explore . I know I was until I picked up Faceless Menace. I figured it would be a card to get cut, but it stayed in there. I liked it so much that it was one of the first cards I put into my Tatyova deck. It cantrips at worst, but almost always ends up ramping, too. I'm kin...

Bash, Borrow, or Steal - Thassa, God of the Sea
Theros Beyond Death Review This was a very exciting set for this deck, just as I had hoped. Thassa's Intervention - All builds can make use of big X spells and being able to dig deep is certainly welcome, but I'm not sure this is much better than Dig Through Time in practice. Counterspell mode is c...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Plasm Capture
Depends on your definition of 'playable'. I've used it to pretty decent effect in a playgroup that's not super competitive in a Lands deck that also has Mystic Snake and Frilled Mystic. YMMV.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion
Is the Growth Spiral each turn worth what you have to put into the rest of the deck? It's going to be rough going in my opinion. In the Command Zone? Probably not. I don't think Uro is going to make waves as a commander, but I think I want to play him in my Tatyova deck, probably as a replacement f...
