Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Aside from astrolabe, what else about snow is an issue? Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single card in Ice age, Cold snap or MH1 that is an issue in any format because it is snow. Dark depths, but that could just as easily be non snow, and is an issue because it combos with stage and hex...

All conjecture, but I think anyone expecting MH1 level mistakes will be proven wrong. If I were WOTC- I would be aiming for "safe" and fetchlands plus big EDH mythics would be the way I would aim for. Maybe a return to Snow.
Safe and snow do not belong in the same sentence.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I love Painter's Servant . I played Imperial Painter for my first few years of Legacy, so it has a place in my heart. It would be cool to see it in Modern, but I just don't know how all of that would work. I guess I'm asking for a decklist, lol. I don't have a final list yet, and testing basically ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Tempo has at times been playable, but outside of Treasure Cruise was never top tier. I do feel like the format is open enough to brewing at the moment, but as a paper player it's rather difficult to do right now. Been trying to make Painters Servant work since Oko personally. Aether Gust has been a ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think if you played Legacy you would realise just how much more cheap mana there is there cf Modern. I've played a lot of Legacy, not much lately since we don't have a local scene for it so it's dropped off a lot in the past 2 years but I still have my decks... I'm just limited to what I've got b...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I don't think that higher levels of land interaction does reduce mana costs in Legacy I don't think you quite recognize the impact Wasteland has on the format. It's removing lands from both sides of the table, in a 6 turn game, if both sides make 5 of their land drops that's 10 lands on the board. ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I have to disagree there, even aggressive decks would prefer Swords to Plowshares, the only time Path is better is when the opponent can't get a land. 1 land is often times worth considerably more life than whatever Swords provides is worth, as it lets the opponent do more things faster. Just the ba...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

yea that fact is something that I feel does come up when comparing the formats and is why tron exists in modern at the numbers it does. I just wish we could get a Wasteland Variant that costs 1 to activate. I feel like it would allow the format to gain better Land removal but yea one of the best pa...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Swords is twice as good as Fatal Push is about all the swords discussion on swords above, and I would stand by that. That does not mean to say swords alone will beat a wurmcoil deck, nobody was claiming that- re-read the comments and you see explanations as to.why removal is not good enough, not cla...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I mean, they pretty much explained that it was polarizing the meta, by making it Aggro vs Field of the Dead decks, so not really anything new. Also, they DID specify increasing win rates with the addition of Hour of Promise. This isn't something novel or new, so I don't know how you came to that co...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

So Historic just got a new ban announcement today. The ban itself isn't that important but their reasoning was interesting. While its overall win rate is rarely at the top, its matchups are extremely polarized. The win rate wasn't the highest, there were multiple decks better than it, and it wasn't ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I'm a player that hates getting countered. Especially when it's a counter with upside. However, there is an important distinction I want to make. I've noticed Wizards has made most of the pushed counterspells lately focus on non creature spells. But that still brings up removal. The problems with r...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I thought MH was great. It did have a few notable misses and some power issues but all in all it's the sort of set Modern needs. It even brought us several new answers. They still have development problems though, that I think are going to linger for a long time. Bans are out of control because of p...

The tech giants are spending billions under the assumptions covid protocols in place for 10 years That's not why they're doing what they're doing. Yes, don't be too down cast. The large companies have enjoyed up shifts in productivity. Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

If it makes financial sense for those companies to keep work from home for the next 10 years how will a small LGS operate in the same world? Different business models. Office work that doesn't deal with walk in customers can be done remotely. Tech companies are well suited for significant amounts o...

When will this even be allowed though and what will the game even look like at that point. Facebook, Apple and Google have implemented work from home covid protocols for their entire companies for the next 10 years! Ten years is an eternity in MTG. Sets and formats will come and go in that time. Pu...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Paper will recover. Edh is built on paper. Community driven formats will continue in paper I'm not really in agreement on this point. My main reason is that this relies on having places to play. When most of the game shifts to digital you lose a lot of the drive to organize community formats and pl...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The old 3 weeks to bottom price maxim no longer holds, it is more nuanced now. Cards like Force of Will can rebound a day after release whilst cards like Bob might head south for a couple of months, but generally for cards like Noble I would be pulling the trigger in a week or two. It's a lot harde...

Forgot to say this. Hard to believe Noble Hierarch is only 15-17 dollars now... it used to be a 50 dollar card. I guess double masters reprint + low activity of the format due to pandemic helped bring the price down waiting for it to drop a little more.. then might get some. :) A lot of cards are r...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Temples are good in some decks. The new land set is 6 lands iirc. 6 lands is a really strange number. There's 10 dual color pairs, 10 tri color pairs, 5 4 color pairs, 5 1 color pairs. Makes me think it's either a set of tribal lands (feels odd for Zendikar), or a set of single colored lands plus a...

Zendikar Rising releases September 25th. Spoilers likely start in 3 weeks or so? Confirmed no fetchlands in main set, but MaRo said he's getting "a land cycle he has wanted to put into a set for many years." So at least it's not another lump of Temples? In all fairness, Temples are great ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I wouldn't buy the full art foils, I believe Uro/Mystic will be banned within 8 months or less. It's possible, I'm watching the meta for a bit longer before deciding. Right now the decks still seem decent but not too good. As always though, that can change. We're at least 4 months out from regular ...
