Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Eternal formats are theoretically diverse given their card pool. That's why I don't mind that decks be linear in pre-SB games. They can't possibly predict what they will be against. When they can it's a symptom of a skewed meta. So it's normal that they optimize their pre-SB deck to be as efficient...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

So I've been out of the loop with Modern for the last few weeks, playing and watching a lot of Pioneer. Where's the discussion on Oko in Modern at right now? Is he most likely fine once Urza is gone? I could be wrong, but the last Oko discussion I saw in this thread is people saying his price is ri...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

That being said, it is interesting about the design mistakes that ktkenshinx is discussing. Some of these design mistakes are not apparent right away, but become more apparent (after bans and such). Many of these are just mistakes waiting to happen or already happening. Which cards do we want to sp...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Destroy target creature or planeswalker with 4 mana or less, draw a card at 2 mana sorcery seems to strong? Or is this what we need? It depends. That would be the sort of removal spell that at least trades at parity again. Or perhaps 3 mana, but untaps a land on resolution. But, the question you th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

The solution to fast combo and linear decks is not to bring more. It's to create better answers and better sideboard cards. Or weaken them a bit with some bans. TBH, I'm not of the opinion that things are as bad as many claim. GP Colombus was imperfect but not a disaster. I think we are closer to a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Mtgthewary ...what exactly are 'we' going to react to, and how? If you mean Wizards, well they are reacting faster, the issue is as its been for a very long time. Modern is not a priority of balance, and any testing they do is minimal and incomplete. Proof? Eldrazi. Hogaak. Urza. W6 (Legacy) Oko (S...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

At the time Twin was banned, we didnt play Probe. When people say 'I wish there was more interaction' they mean BGx, and URx. They mean Discard, Removal, Counters. They mean Abrupt Decay, Bolt, Remand, and IoK. They mean Cryptic Command. They dont mean 'I cast my chalice on 2, thats proactive inter...

What deck does that today? What deck says "You have to interact with me or lose"?
Almost all of them. Very few decks give zero consideration to who is sitting across the table from them.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Most good interaction in the format is proactive rather than reactive, but that doesn't mean it's not still interaction.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Is it though? Because as someone who exclusively plays(ed) interactive decks, this definitely does not feel like that is the case. Definitely. The most interactive decks in the format are gone (Pod/Twin), but out of the other decks, basically every single deck has adopted some interaction. Most do ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Except said Pioneer format has it's own major issues in different ways. As stated previously in the thread the Pioneer format is incredibly unhealthy right now and dominated by solitaire based decks or hyper aggro. The format has no answers and it will continue to get worse with how wizards track r...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

It's a positive thing that multiple people openly express their concerns about Modern, being in a bad shape. Pioneer dredged those issues, indeed. It's the broken format, where more bans will keep hapenning. 2019 is not the only thing to blame in Modern. In fact, I consider this a terrible statemen...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

First is the notion that bans solve this problem. These are short-term fixes that just patch small issues until the next issue arises, at the considerable cost of confidence, buy-in, and format unity. Bans invalidate investments, create fear, and lead to an environment where players don't try to ad...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Interesting point regarding Brainstorm. To a person like myself, who does not play legacy, Brainstorm seems like a central part of the format. In that sense, I think you are very right about the need for a consensus in Modern. There are cards which probably "should" be bd banned from an o...

Painter's Servant

So I'm messing around with an idea right now. Mostly curious if anyone else has some good suggestions here. The idea is to use Painter's Servant to name a color, and then use the named color to generate additional value on my cards. So far I have identified strong packages in red and blue for color ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

I'm watching oko's price almost hourly because I'm going to pick some up for use in other formats. His price is actually ticking up since his banning, he is now up almost $3. Do you guys think we will have enough demand in other formats to keep his price this high like field of the dead has proven ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Control loses out on cards oddly enough, not counters. The speed of Counterspell would be nice, but like I said earlier it's great against Tron for that reason. Aggro decks couldn't care less if you counter their stuff or remove it; infact, they might prefer you counter it so it changes their math ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

There are very rare exceptions, but those are not 'answers' so much as new brew's to fill a void. When a 'best deck' ends up coming around, the answers simply dont exist, they would be found. Not really. We have never seen answers found quickly to best decks. We have occasionally seen answers found...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Same reason no ban hit Modern. They let problems fester in Modern/Legacy/Vintage, far longer. I think the whole 'brainstorm solutions' is a thing of the past. Players have become so much better at iteration, at just grinding out reps, that the solutions if not found quickly, just don't exist. I rem...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Twitter is really the best way to get a more holistic view I find. And what's that saying when Twitter of all places is where you're trying to carry out nuanced discussion on a format or discuss more theoretical topics? On the subject of easy communication, I want to relate this to data. It's no se...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

I can't emphasize enough that the community conversation must shift away from bans and towards the abject failures of design, development, and Play Design this year. I get that people want Modern (Standard, Pioneer, Legacy...) to be "fixed" and that might mean a number of bans on 2019 car...

Re: [Official] Modern Prices Discussion

when can we see the price of stoneforge mystic stabilizing? I'm not sure when to get my set maybe wait a month or two? people are still very hyped to buy. SFM price is at an all time high now. Considering there's a return to Zendikar in about a year, and Wizards usually reprints an unbanned Modern ...
