Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

The trick with dredge according to MaRo isn't that it allows for non-traditional gameplay (although it sure doesn't help that decks exist with no lands and only a plan to Dredge), but that the levers on it are pretty hard to manage from a development standpoint. - The mana cost of the spell matters ...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

2008 was a year for Morningtide, Shadowmoor, Eventide, and Shards of Alara. That gives us the following mechanics as potentials: - Prowl , which feels like a slamdunk for a detective set on a one-off card. - Evoke didn't first appear in 2008, but it did last appear in Standard in 2008. Not impossibl...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Shivan Harvest

Yeah hard to add more - I too have had this on the maybeboard for a few decks like Kresh the Bloodbraided or Korvold, Fae-Cursed King aristocrats, but it has all those issues. The rate is mostly good, but... - If I care about a sac outlet, I typically need those to be 0-mana and this loses out to Go...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Luxior, Giada's Gift

I wonder if anyone has ever killed a player in a game of commander by swinging in with an equipped Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded ... Dang it, now I have to add this to Daretti Superfriends to try... real talk, I think this card is fine. Outside of the stupid Druid tricks, it seems best in a deck that's...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Zedruu the Greathearted

Man, did we want Ruhan of the Fomori and Zedruu the Greathearted 's first types switched. I wish we lived in a world where we got a control Giants Zedruu as a giant and an aggro American Minotaurs deck with Ruhan, but at the time it made sense to have an aggro giant for Lorwyn Giants to splash blue...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Organic Extinction

Like with Hour of Reckoning this costs too much if you aren't ludicrously far ahead, making it a bit win-more even in decks that can leverage it. Admittedly, it is much easier for this to be "10 mana win the game" than it is for Reckoning to be "7 mana win the game", but even so....

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Off-topic in that I don't know where else to post it, but I was just too amused by how the game turned out. Got to play a game over the weekend of three precons (1-8th Doctors, 13th Doctor, and the Galadriel precon) versus Tuvasa the Sunlit that was also a Planechase game. Long game, lots of words, ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - The Court of the Monarch

These are all sorta medium - turns out gaining the monarchy without a body to immediately defend it isn't quite as good. I will say I probably should actively seek a copy of Court of Ardenvale for my Quintorius, Field Historian deck though; card seems fairly sick. Get monarchy into the game, I often...

Re: What basic lands do you run?

I have had a funny trajectory with basics, going from "I don't care as long as they've all got the same border" to "I only run full-art lands" to "I want to run old border lands with a penchant for lands from Urza's Saga and Tempest that still have the "t: Add a G"...

Re: Wow @MTGSally really did go off a cliff since our move here.

To make myself feel really old - I remember MTGNews and was even briefly a mod there, if you can believe it. So I've been around for two sinkings of MTG websites. I jumped to Nexus way faster than I made the leap to Salvation though, likely because of how convinced I was that it was the end and to n...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Vanishing Verse

If Vanishing Verse was in different colors, it might be a stellar card. But in Orzhov, I find this a pretty tough sell personally. 9 times out of 10, a creature is what you want killed, and Orzhov has superior spells for cheaper ( Swords to Plowshares , Path to Exile , possible Deadly Rollick and Sn...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Cartographer's Hawk

I feel like I'm legally obligated to have an opinion on this card, and my opinion is it's underwhelming - slow, fragile, conditional. Knight of the White Orchid sees more play partially because of its immediately, and partially because its typeline lends itself to both Human and Knight tribal, which...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Losheel, Clockwork Scholar

Currently running this in Lurrus of the Dream-Den Tempered Steel, where as one might surmise it's fine - the deck does like to rumble and can trigger this every turn although it's quite awkward that Lurrus can't recur Losheel itself. It's a narrow band of decks that are Wx aggressive lists with a he...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Sticky Fingers

I generally prefer the artifact/equipment we've picked up in this niche (most recently Diamond Pick-Axe but also Beamtown Beatstick ), and I prefer the huge power boost off of Madcap Skills for a more aura-focused R/x deck that wants Voltron kills. None of these are cards I play heavily. From what I...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Subterranean Tremors

I've tried this in a lot of decks, and it's a case where I have found the added flexibility isn't worth the lower rate. - If I want to kill creatures, I find Chain Reaction and Blasphemous Act do the job better, to say nothing of Rolling Earthquake . - If I want to kill artifacts, I find that the as...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Liliana, Death's Majesty

Planeswalkers are interesting in Commander, as I find the two different places I play most often (my house with family and friends; a friend house with their kids and extended family) have two different attitudes that seem to be the prevailing ones: 1) Planeswalkers are silly little cards and so as ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Hallowed Burial

We're at a time of peak wraths. After Wrath of God and Day of Judgment were the gold standard for so many decades of Magic's 30 years, the last 5-6 or so have seen an absolute flood of absurd boardwipes. As noted, that takes one-time staple Hallowed Burial from top of the heap to rarely played. - If...

Mighty Emergence and other cards that allow you to put counters on Rex immediately provide some card draw while also making him hit harder.
Yeah, was thinking Master Biomancer and effects like that too. The Ozolith is an option to bank counters for later.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - The Filter Lands

I've generally been really underwhelmed by these because they're so awkward on turn 1, and like TheGildedGoose I often misplay them as well which is a minor but obnoxious concern. I tend to go out of my way to not run them. They're clearly better than a tapland (a Temple, a Gainland, etc), but in ma...

Re: Black Friday Pauper Commander Tournament at LGS - What Should I Play?

Not that you need more options, but I know if it were my tournament I'd be brewing up Erinis, Gloom Stalker + Street Urchin . Clearly that deck is worse when all the fetches and loam tricks and Strip-lands are not legal in the format, but a repeatable machinegun creature that grinds out value and ra...

Re: Me, the Immortal - way better than Skullbriar

Fun list! Any thoughts on The Ozolith ? Despite the wording on it, I believe what happens is Me keeps her counters and you also put them on The Ozolith, allowing you to "double" the counters on Me or just make more "Me"s out of the rest of your creatures. Less exciting for Me, pe...

Re: Black Friday Pauper Commander Tournament at LGS - What Should I Play?

I have a Quintorius deck and folks definitely sleep on him - he's a strong commander, one who frequently surprises people. I will say that I think it's an uphill climb to make him work in Pauper though. While a few of the best enablers are pauper legal (namely Relic of Progenitus ) many of what I'd ...
