Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I totally get the flavor of the card, but The Balrog, Flame of Udûn is terrible. With that (again, super flavorful!) drawback this needed to be bigger (Ward, Menace, better stats) and/or be cheaper (4 MV). As it stands it's awful in limited since there's so many random legends around and awful in co...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Kederekt Leviathan

It''s only in the last ~5 years or so that I can say every color has a better 0-mana discard outlet if they're trying to do Hellbent/Madness/"whenever you discard a card/a card is put into your graveyard from anywhere" nonsense and in fact, I'm not convinced every color can be better than ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Transcendent Message

If you are tribal, this is Distant Melody and Kindred Discovery with extra steps and thus not very good. If you are in the market for an X-spell for a midrangey deck, chances are you'd rather use your creatures for attacking and blocking and Pull from Tomorrow . Blue Sun's Zenith , and Stroke of Ge...

Re: RRR: Rashmi Ragavan aRtifact Lantern Control

I'm worried I'm reading the card wrong. As far as I can tell you only get the treasure when you cast your first spell on your turns. I'd love it if it was every turn! No, this is correct - R&R only trigger off the first spell you cast on your own turn. That said, I myself read R&R incorrect...

RRR: Rashmi Ragavan aRtifact Lantern Control

I think in our haste to dismiss Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy as a weak card headlining a truly atrocious precon (legit playing with it in hand, it's one of the worst precons they've ever put out), I at least missed the back-up commander Rashmi and Ragavan . This card seems fairly strong for two reasons. ...

Re: Human tribal suggestions

Human Tribal support has emerged in Selesnya thanks to Innistrad (already covered) or in Mardu (mostly Orzhov with a splash of red) from Ikoria with folks like Jirina Kudro , General Kudro of Drannith , Jirina, Dauntless General , or the Silvar, Devourer of the Free + Trynn, Champion of Freedom duo....

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - The Bringer Cycle

Generally speaking these were sorta butt on release and are awful now. 9 mana is awful for a 5/5 trample with an upkeep trigger these days, and was untennable then. In casual constructed and standard these basically demanded a 5C deck. I do recall liking Bringer of the Blue Dawn a bit in a 5C Shrine...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Fumble

Fumble looks powerful but niche - two mana Unsummon is meh, but stealing even a single piece of equipment for two mana is a bargain. If you can blow out a voltron deck and steal multiple, that will probably knock them out of the game. ...unfortunately, the two most commonly-played pieces of equipme...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Fumble

This card looks so strong on paper, but it definitely needs the right deck - a tempo-y deck that wants to stick creatures and disrupt opponents. I don't currently have any decks like that, but I can see as I make tweaks and upgrades to Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir that maybe this would be disgusting. Rea...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Filter Out seems interesting - for one more than Hurkyl's Recall you get to also recycle enchantments or randomly nail superfriends decks. I think you'd want to be a deck that was planning on breaking Recall for nonsense with mana rocks though; not a staple by any means.

Re: Non-staxy color hosers

Compost , Insight , and Carpet of Flowers are more about rewarding you for your opponent's colors than crippling your opponents. These are honestly strong enough that you barely need to hack to get value (and that's known of Carpet, hence the price tag) The same is true for Warmth , Roots of Life ,...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Skyclave Apparition

Yes, I also need to pick up a ton of Skyclave Apparition s now that they've rotated from Standard and dropped to a reasonable price. This is the best " Fiend Hunter because... - It hits any nonland perm, admittedly only ones that are 4MV or less, but that covers a lot in modern EDH. - It never ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Phyrexian Arena

I don't think Arena is quite obsolete but I've found myself ever colder on it for sure. It's slow for sure, and Black Market has a lot more versatility. It's at its best in slower decks that care about enchantments or devotion (typically monoblack or Orzhov), and is no longer the staple it once was.

Re: Sword of Once and Future

Dirk's list matches my own pretty closely especially the top 5. I also like Sinis point - I've found in modern EDH that spending a total of 5 mana to play and equip a sword is awkward and clunky outside of dedicated equipment decks unless the Sword specifically synergizes with your plan. So my list ...

Re: What role does Sculpting Steel *actually* fill?

Good thread as these are cards that I find myself still mindlessly running that, as Sinis says, have probably aged out of the format - not just Sculpting Steel but pretty much any copy effect that can't clone degenerate commanders. I'm increasingly cold on sibling effects like Mirrormade , Copy Arti...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Shriekmaw

A pet favorite of mine - love my Lorwyn foil. I play this everywhere, almost as much as Mulldrifter. As noted, "non-artifact, non-creature" is a major limitation and if you don't care about creature count this is more or less strictly worse than the suite of good black removal ( Infernal G...

@Dragoon lol I realized that after I posted it (while watching the limited resources rare review), but too slow for you to call me out. Re: To Battle! Battles in Commander

I was looking to make a Commander Battle deck, but I wanted a list of cards that could transform them without creature attacks. Finding cards that deal damage to permanents (not just planeswalkers and players) is difficult. Removing counters is a way, but so far selection is minimal. Do people have...

To Battle! Battles in Commander

Had a chance to do a play-at-home prerelease on Friday. Small sample size is smaller than normal, but I gotta say - I was sort of underwhelmed by Battles. I started thinking about where and if any of them are good in EDH as well and figured we'd start a thread about it. Rather than review them all, ...

Re: MoM commander breakdown

Nice review I and others seem more excited about Rona, Herald of Invasion because she can combine with Pestilence effects to build your own Omniscience . That seemed to be missing from your estimation of her, and to me it bumps her up a bit. I definitely think she's better than Vohar, Vodalian Desec...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast

Alright ya'll, help me understand why this Daretti is $22. I know on paper he looks like he checks all the boxes - a 3MV 'walker that +1s to protect himself, -1s to remove threats, and has an ultimate that is achievable at standard pace and generates crazy value. But for the life of me I haven't bee...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants

Ajani is underwhelming for sure. - There are plenty of 'walkers that do +1/+1 counters better. Ajani, Caller of the Pride comes down a turn faster as does Basri Ket . At 4MV, admittedly Ajani Steadfast , Ajani Goldmane , and newcomer Archangel Elspeth all have to minus instead of plus for counters b...

Re: Phelddagrif: Show Weakness to Hide Your Strength

MoM is upon us. As a combat-centric set introducing the battle type, not a lot here for us but a few things caught my eye and I wanted to talk to the Cult of the Hippo about them. - Sunfall is absurd, right? Seems like it strictly-betters Hallowed Burial and Final Judgment and functionally betters P...
