Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Answers suck, threats are too good, planeswalkers are too good, there are too many strong permanents, and stack-based Magic can't keep up. Disagree on this portion. Answers are good enough. The answer cards in Modern can keep up with all but the most egregious creatures and planeswalkers. We have v...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Any deck can win, but back to back 5-0 leagues? And not just 2 back to back. Keep demeaning them, but I'm not talking about one-offs here, which you keep ignoring. It still wouldn't mean anything. Mediocre decks like Bant Spirits make these 5-0 league dumps every day simply because they're differen...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

I get you but still not too convinced either way. If WoTC wants MTGA to be their main competitive/premier play platform moving forward, not having a complete card pool to test a format with on the platform itself hinders that. If it needs to be done 1st in MTGO before it gets added to Arena then it...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Re: Urza and GP Columbus T16/T64 There's tons of Sultai Whirza across these brackets (T64 here: https://www.channelfireball.com/all-str ... eck-lists/). There's 2 in the T8 with one missing on breakers as GK noted, 5 in the T16, 6 in the T32, and 10 in the T64. That's the kind of increasing convers...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

gkourou The Saturday and Sunday PTQ's have only one Urza deck each in their Top 8s Also, I'm seeing plenty of Jund going around. As for the Top 64, yeah concerning numbers, but I don't expect anything to happen till February (?), I assume GP Austin will be the deciding factor in their decision. Bee...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

I think one can definitely argue that a long term goal of Arena is to have full card support from RTR forward. But, it's worth noting that the jump from that to nearly full Modern support (essentially, the point at which most cards that see competitive play are available) isn't that much larger. Th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Make red elemental blast and blue elemental blast legal in modern. Color restricted hate cards are good (both in casting cost and target) because they stay in the sideboard and only come out when things get out of hand. They never made black, white, or green versions of the elemental blasts but I c...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Without wishing to discuss twin further, I played Probe, and as I recall most did. Without wishing to say you're lying, because Twin DID use git probe in earlier iterations. However, claims like this are very easily fact checked. And Twin variants have mostly moved away from running it in 2015. May...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

I get that there are people who dislike twin and have a negative view towards 2014 and 2015 for whatever reason, but y'all should really stop trying to disparage those times by presenting false information about Twin or the level of interaction present in that time frame.

Actually, the final is Jund vs UW Control
Did you jump to this conclusion by watching the broadcast of a past event? Because as of this post, the top 8 just started.

Edit: Top 8 according to a mod on twitch chat: 2x Jund, Scapeshift, Devoted Combo, UWG Control, Urza Oko, Nogaak, Eldrazi Tron

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Hell, 2014-2015 Modern was in no way shape or form any fairer, you just have a nostalgia about Twin (and maybe Pod). You had Tron, Storm, Scapeshift and T2 Infect kills. Remember, BGx had Deathrite during that period. After came the Cruise/Dig era. Then Eldrazi Winter. Where's that famous "Gol...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

pretty crazy announcement!

Did not expect W6 to go in Legacy, always seemed like WoTC gave cards a longer leash in Legacy.

Disappointed but not surprised with nothing for Modern.

Even more surprised and slightly disappointed that OUAT is still legal in Pioneer.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Nah. Legacy is a great format but the cost of multi-coloured mana-bases in paper is just too prohibitive for it to ever be bigger than Modern unless the reserved list goes. An 'affordable' non-blue competitive Legacy deck still runs about 1-1.5k USD. UW decks get away with running just 1 dual but th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Probably a hot take but Modern is probably a little too far gone even if design philosophy swings around and distributes power fairly between threats and answers because outside of a MH-type set, Modern-level answers have to be dripped into Modern through standard. Bans will be needed, followed by s...

[mention]Tzoulis[/mention] Nothing wrong with my line of thinking. It's the same as yours. I believe whatever you say will happen sooner or later whatever they do, It's the nature of power creep and non-rotating formats. I simply stated my reasoning as to why Pioneer would be easier for WoTC to mana...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Yeah, yugioh style. Hey, we generate 2452 mistakes, sell cards and after we Bann them and community is happy. What you think happened with yugioh and this strategy? By the way, they still don't ban correctly. Veil and leyline instead of nykthos, because they need it on theros. Yeah, seems great and...

And they have been banned, which shows their willingless to address said pushed or busted cards. So what's the problem?

Pioneer may be good, or may end being a bust. But being better than Modern is a low bar to overcome.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

What I fail to understand however is, what gives people the confidence that WOTC will manage Pioneer better than how they managed Modern over the last 12 months? Are the people managing Pioneer not the same peo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Discussion is based around bans and unbans because right now all eyes are on a shiny new format. A format that WoTC is actively regulating via banlist updates. Initially, I was highly skeptical about Pioneer succeeding. I thought it would end up just like what Modern is now, a bunch of fatigued, enf...

It is as KTK said w.r.t development level, threats in general have gotten stronger, leaner, more consistent, more resilient and are ridiculously varied. There are more and more high value 'must-answer' stuff at almost every point in the curve and the answers are just woefully lacking. WoTC threw a p...

Vs Dredge, you can disrupt their neonate or use denial their reunion, then denial their flashback spell, use a spot removal on one of their creatures, then try to kill them with TBR. I'm not sure how you can disrupt a neonate, unless you mean discarding it before they get to cast it. so that means ...

After the 4 Chills game 1, Game 2 I was literally attacking for lethal with a Shadow and an Angler, after getting rid of his only blocker when he was at 3 life (I was at 7 life myself). At instant speed, he cycled the red cycle land to dredge and hit Narcomiba, Chill, Stinkweed Imp. Cycled his seco...
