Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

There's also SCG Team Modern happening this weekend. Not unified so there are no deck restrictions.

Lack of coverage is something that the magic community as a whole has been lamenting. So when we finally get one and it's like this...

It's a pretty bad look.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

You seem to be under the impression that we think bans are the only way. I assure you that you are sorely wrong about this. WoTC needs to have short, mid and long term plans for Modern, and they need to execute all of these with very little margin of error. The only area we disagree is what has to ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

The bolded bit above (emphasis added) could not be more wrong. Modern has survived numerous periods where the format sucked. Players kept coming back. Players even showed out in force to Hogaak Summer GP despite widespread knowledge the format was profoundly broken. Historically, Modern has always ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

The main takeaway from that for me seems to be that nobody was playing Extended outside of the times when they HAD to play it on the GP/PT circuit.

And Modern, for all its flaws hasn't sunk that low.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

Technically, you don't win a control deck with interaction. You're either faster than it or go (way) above it, you don't fight something to its strengths and expect to win. So, your example works against you. Exact same thing can be said for Urza. Go over it with Tron, go under it with infect. Play...

Wow, cardboard that costs hundreds of dollars a pop are harder to move, who woulda thought. Sounds almost like people put more time and consideration into big purchases over small ones.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

This take is wrong and will not save Modern. We have two clear historical examples of this. The first is 2016 Modern, which was largely unhealthy for most of the year, resulting in an Eye ban after a horrible February and March, and then a GGT/Probe ban after a horrible September through December. ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I know that 2019 was the year of ban mania, both legitimately and through unwarranted player outcry, but we really need to stop discussing bans and unbans. Modern has a much more existential threat in Pioneer's presence on Arena and Modern's (so-far) absence on that platform. I also know that many ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

PS: These Urza/Oko/Astrolabe decks are an absolute abomination, and cards (cardS) will be banned. Remember when Twin was banned for stifling Blue diversity. Wonder what WoTC thinks of Oko now when almost every blue deck is splashing green for Oko (and to a lesser extent veil) Is Veil of Summer real...

MFW when Abrupt Decay, a general purpose permanent removal spell is somehow considered a narrow card when it's about Twin.

A Birthing Pod deck can somewhat be a serious contender. (and by serious contender, I mean around the strength of Stoneforge Mystic decks)
Stoneforge decks are not serious contenders. Oko decks are. The only relevant Stoneforge deck is good because of Oko not Stoneforge.

In other news. Oko just got banned in Pioneer too. Alongside Nexus of Fate. https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/december-16-2019-pioneer-banned-announcement/ In the case of Nexus of Fate, WoTC also demonstrates willingness to ban cards not just on power level but also on potential for...

Re: Plague Engineer Good to have but not something that was really needed. If there's something that Modern was NOT lacking, it's ways to deal with small creatures. Updated post-ELD MTGO picture. This is only Challenges, Premiers, PTQs, and other higher level, non-curated events with T32 data available. N=368 decks, which isn't a terrible sample to get a metagame picture, but is also more limited than even a single GP. At least this has the benefit of spanning...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

More broadly, because there are lots of planeswalkers running around it makes sense to pack mainboard hate. Planeswalker removal is often underpriced compared to creature removal/direct damage. I don't see planeswalkers going anywhere in the near future so we have to adapt. Outside of the narrow sp...

The fact that people think Griselbrand reanimator is a creature deck in Legacy does not give me hope for any discussion moving on at this thread at all.
You have some serious comprehension issues if that's what you believe that's what people are thinking.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

That's not a bad idea. I struggle to think of decks that are linear and interactive, and I imagine those measures (if separate) would be highly correlated. I'll probably collapse them or just keep them focused on measuring interaction. Sultai Whirza and 5C Humans. Amulet Titan and various Death Sha...

Man, some of y'all have some serious misconceptions about Legacy. For the bunch of you that are so against gameplay and strategies that revolve around creatures, then I'm sorry but Legacy is still not going to be the format for you. It might be a brainstorm + ponder feel-smart format but it still re...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Can't say much more than that's just straight up incorrect. Plenty of card games have stack interaction (hint: Heartstone is not the only other cardgame), all card games have resource systems (and MtG's outdated land system is its biggest weak point). If you think that putting everything sideways i...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

I actually don't mind Veil in Legacy, I think it's a great equalizer. For a format with so many broken blue cards, I find it hilarious that people are complaining about a great blue hoser while Legacy blue players have been reveling in riches for so long. The main problem in Legacy as always being: ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Sorry, I forgot to include mana costs on those when I rewrote the post, 1WUB or 1GRB. Certainly strong, but that's the level of value that high mana answers need to generate to justify being played. I gave another example earlier, WUU exile a spell + draw a card for a 3 mana option. At 1 and 2 mana...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

That is exactly how good answers should be. Low-cost, relevant against a lot of things but not everything. Bolt, Decay, path and Push answer a very wide range of threats while trading even or up. Expecting your cheap, efficient answers to be relevant against everything the field can throw at you is...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

I think we have been conditioned to believe our removal is efficient, but when tested in actual matches and formats, it's surprisingly narrow across the board. Bolt, Decay, and Push don't reliably interact with a bunch of format threats including big mana creatures, planeswalkers, and big-butted cr...
