Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

See as much as people ask in these threads for them to ban Astrolabe I honestly don't think they will do it in either Modern or Legacy simply for the fact that it allows cheaper manabases . There's quite a few cards you could bane before banning Astrolabe anyway Not true for Legacy if you wanted to...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Should we list all the decks which can kill on or before turn 4 with a perfect opening 7? Not even perfect opening 7. Perfect Top 10 cards on the play, using all of them. 4 lands 1 snare/opt/SV/Astrolabe whatever 1 remand 1 twin creature 1 FoN 1 random blue card to pitch 1 Splinter Twin Obviously s...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

But I actually do care about planeswalker points. I don't remember the last time I didn't have Byes at GPs. I do remember when it went from 3 to 2. But maybe it's better this way? I do know that I personally chose to pay $55 to play a Pioneer Pro Tour Qualifier rather than a 3 round $25 Modern tour...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Data is never the issue. Incompetence is. So much this. Hiding matchup win-rate data is not going to reduce ban mania or induce stability. The decklists of top 8/16/32/54 whatever are still going to be released. Now instead of having a granular view of all decklists (or as many as karsten can colle...

[Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Was it small? Is Paris. Do we have numbers? In the past, CM events have the same turnout as a small-to-medium SCG event, if I remember correctly. 200 players for Modern, which is around 3x smaller than the worst-performing Modern GP in 2019 as indicated in KTK's article. For what it's worth they ar...

[Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

There's no drawback, only upside. So what exactly is being underestimated here? That 5 cards is a lot less than 7? That having two cards less than your opponent is a huge disadvantage? That if your opponent kept his 7 it means that his hand was GOOD *and* that he has 7 cards, not 5, like you? The o...

[Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

you guys are also underestimating the drawback of putting back cards on the bottom of the library. if i mulligan twice, that's like getting hit by a turn 1 mind rot. And you get to see a fresh 7 and choose the 2 weakest cards to toss. Which is miles better than having to mulligan twice, seeing 2 le...

London Mulligan is great in Limited, great in Standard, great in Pioneer, fine in Legacy, don't care/don't know about Vintage or Pauper. It is also fine in modern, in every deck except Tron and/or Dredge. Limited, yes. Standard, no. Pioneer, no. Modern, lol no. Development is based on principles wh...

Stupid cards like Swords to Plowshares deserve stupid threats like True-Name Nemesis and Ancient Tomb+Chalice.
Good luck playing any fair creature deck with STP in the format.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

For me, Legacy is dead. I can not find a single FNM in my whole country where events fire. You can't kill what's dead. That's why I believe Wizards made a great movement in cutting all Legacy GP's and SCG's are being cut also, as I can see. I would be even happier if they try to mess around with it...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

Astrolabe really just needed to not draw a card, or can only filter using snow mana. The recent really egregious WoTC mistakes could all have been perfectly fine and fair cards to have if they didn't get 1 too many abilities tacked on. Like if Hogaak didn't have convoke, or if Urza had any 1 of his ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

This Oko-Urza-Titan slugfest is soooo annoying to watch. At least we get to see a Yawgmoth or Bant Snow Control/Snowblade from time to time. The GP coverage was much better in terms of games and decks. I have found that the SCG meta in general always seems to be much more inbred than GP metas. They...

Day one meta breakdown for the GP. Edit: Commentators on both SCG and CFB streams are not even hiding their disdain for Oko right now. Will be a right travesty if it doesn't go. Also 1000ish players which imo is on the smaller side for a North American Modern event, although it might have to do with...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

There's some problematic cards right now, but out of the issues in Modern that's about the 5th or 6th most pressing issue to the formats long term sustainability, behind Arena, Pioneer, playing in Paper, reprint logistics, and poor design choices. I've been thinking about this a bit more. Given the...

Do you have historical evidence to back up this claim? I find it hard to believe that you have the confidence to make this claim when 2019 Modern is in the lousiest state it's been since Eldrazi Winter.
