Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Creature combat is the best part of magic as a game compared to other similar games. There's a reason we devote 6 phases to it. It's the part where the most decisions and interaction takes place, it's the most skill intensive part of magic. Good magic formats are about creature combat. Creature com...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Well, at the same time, while I see claims about the interactivity of the format, at least currently (we don't know how the field will look post Field of the Dead ban), control decks are non-existent. If you take a look at the control decks that have developed so far, the most successful one, i.e. U...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

I want to say here, however, that while I am happy with the banning of Copter in Pioneer, and I had called it at my playgroup (hence I had preferred to make the MonoB Vampires and not the aggro version), I also feel that the power of Copter in Pioneer shows very a fundamental problem of the format, ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

GP Legacy had 900 more players than GP Modern a week ago. Legacy looks pretty good at the moment. I am only worried about the amount of Oko's I am seeing and Veil of Summer maindeck. It makes a ton of sense to have maindeck Veil of Summer in Legacy where the most played interactive card is Force of...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

Outside Grixis control (and maybe UW, can't remember) Twin Not that I care about this discussion, because frankly, I can't be bothered any more about bans/unbans discussion, I just want to play the %$#%$#% format whether Urza or isn't the best deck, I just want to toot my own horn a bit and say tha...

B&R is up: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/november-18-2019-banned-and-restricted-announcement?tij No changes in Modern. Massive bans in Standard (Oko, Veil, OUT) and more in other formats (W6 in Legacy, Oko in Brawl, Narset in Vintage). Great announcement overall and it unde...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Noticed that this thread and the pioneer thread are both talking about bans. I guess the hammer really is the go to solution for a lot of things. Well, if there are the same people talking in both threads about largely the same topic then it is expected. Truth be told, we haven't seen much discussi...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Is anyone expecting something to happen for Modern on Monday? I have not paid that much attention to the meta this month. I still feel like Urza is objectively the best deck, but I'm not certain whether it's oppressive. In general, whatever is going on in Modern has been somewhat overshadowed by th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

Jund, or Junk. Because a true Midrange deck that thrives on Discard, Removal, and attrition, works in tandem with the Tempo/Counter/Removal deck, to police the diversity of a format like Modern, and keep 'turn 4' as an actual rule. If a UWx Midrange deck was a non-meme...well sure? I doubt such a t...

Re: Deck Choice V. Format Satisfaction

1: Most control decks. Most frequent lists are UW control/stoneblade, Grixis control, Faeries. Back in the day I used to play more Jeskai, and sometimes Esper. Basically if I can cast cryptic command, I am in! 2: Well... control 3: 4. I enjoy the format quite a bit. There is nothing that is really o...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 08/26/2019)

For some relevant context, I played GDS last night, I had 7 free Creeping Chills thrown at me over the span of 2 games. and lost to runner, runner Titans after Thoughtseizing two of them and aggressively Thought-Scouring/Snap-Scouring three Valakuts and two Pacts. This game is stupid. Well, for wha...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 08/26/2019)

I have a few borderless copies. It's nuts in GDS. Might not be terrible in TiTi Blue Moon either, but I'm kind of over losing to all the good decks with trash piles. I've seen it be insane in GDS but I can see i being okay in TiTi decks as well but I don't know that deck well enough to say for sure...

Surprised Maelstrom Pulse is only 3 dollars now.

It used to be a 15-20 dollar card..
Did it? I remember buying a foil (although several years ago before the reprint) for 12-14 euros.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 08/26/2019)

The Simic Urza build is a mix of a control deck (Cryptic, Explosives, Oko) and artifact synergies with a combo finish (sounds familiar?). This deck relies mostly on the egregious mistake that is Oko to combat the normal hate and it hast mostly the same weaknesses as Whirza, Stony/RiP and big mana. ...

All they are doing is buying themselves a few years. Soon you will have the State of Pioneer threads with people screaming about this or that card oppressing the format. Sigh. This will be true for absolutely any format that will be made. Every standard format has it, extended had it, modern has it...

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand once again this thread has come full circle. Ban whatever is good at a given point (from Shadow to Tron to Urza), unban Twin because it never should had been banned. It really has become exhausting to follow this thread, and I like discussing this topic. Can't imagine if you don't an...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 08/26/2019)

I wish I had as much faith as you do. I do not think the timing of bannings was perfect. I do not think Bloodbraid Elf ever needed to be banned. I do not think that Bridge from Below needed to be banned instead of Hogaak. After Twin was allowed to go on for so many years, I do not think the timing ...

People know what Wizards wants them to know . If WotC wants you to believe that Preordain, Bridge from Below, or Green Sun's Zenith are serious offenders to the Modern format, while Urza, Mox Opal, Ancient Stirrings, and similar cards are legal, that's what we have to believe . Green Sun's Zenith w...

Well, for what it's worth, we have 7 different decks in the top8 of the SCG, and 14 different decks in the top16. Urza might have been strong, but the conversation was definitely not out of this world, seeing as only 2 Urza Ascendancy decks made it to top6. Noteworthy inclusions in the top16 are Esp...
