Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

A friend of mine suggested adding a 2 Mana tax to casting a Companion from outside the game. Lurrus is way less broken at 5 Mana and that might prevent a ban being needed in Modern, which is looking increasingly certain. Lurrus would also still be perfectly fine in Standard at 5cmc since the decks t...

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned

I think your point about it there being more Lutri commander decks than decks with the other guys as companions is fairly apt. The other companions create weird gimmick decks and many of them are actively bad in addition to the weird deckbuilding rider. I doubt many of the decks will last the year....

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned

There is not a single human being on the entire planet, in the history of time, that got excited about commander because of rule 11. No, but "I'm excited to play this new Dualcaster Mage in my Nekuzar/Kess/whoever deck" is something I've heard from 3 people in the last 24 hours, and I informed all ...

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned

I support the RC's decision to keep the rules simple with "banned" and "not banned" as the only categories, and I think they make the right decision with this, but yeah, not going to object if I see it as something other than a 101st card. The problem here is that you're ignoring the third option. ...

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned

I think the rather serious deck building constraints from the others will offset the advantages quite handily. These don't come for free (other than Lutri, in Commander). Keruga, the Macrosage is likely going to be the least difficult to pull off in casual, but even then the payoff isn't much great...

Re: Lutri, the Spellchaser Preemptively Banned

So, I agree that Lutri is the most egregious card of the bunch, but I think all of them are inherently problematic from a Commander rules standpoint. Allowing some decks to have 101 cards and others not to do so is annoying, though not deal breaking on it's own. But having the card be cast able from...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

That Inverter/Oracle list is super neat, but the big concern is what will happen once people have the chance to tune it more. The deck has only existed for around a month even in theory, and it wins through lines that are super hard to interact on. With more tuning I could easily see a version of th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Honestly, I think the most damning parts of the M-files articles were that parts on Royal Scions. "Priority test" wut? Because you added an extra keyword to the second plus one and an extra drawn card to the ult? Are you flipping kidding me? This card has the same CMC, shares a color, and doesn't di...

Re: [Unofficial thread] - Theros Beyond Death Previews: Pioneer

If you catch 3 of their creatures with this Wrath, and they draw one card and you draw none, then you just gained Mana over them while hitting them with a 2 for 3. It's not an amazing card for sure, but it does have a significant advantage in that it's the only monoWhite 4 Mana unconditional boardwi...

Re: [Unofficial thread] - Theros Beyond Death Previews: Pioneer

Exactly. And by making it so they can't activate him the turn he comes down, you have forced a list of bad choices on them. Either A: they cast him and wait till next turn to do anything with him. This is effectively a timewalk. B: they cast him after playing another land/dork. If they are top decki...

Re: [Unofficial thread] - Theros Beyond Death Previews: Pioneer

Being unable to play Walkers on curve and still activate them is quite good. In many ways, if you think of each Walker ability as a spell, then this guy is basically littleThalia for Walkers which is not a bad place to be. The turn the Walker comes in to play is when it's the most vulnerable, and th...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

The new Archon goes infinite with Enchanted Evening, though you'll need a way to stop the chain as it is not a may ability. Should be fun for my enchantress deck regardless.

Re: [Official] Theros Beyond Death in Modern

the 2 cmc red enchantment looks really strong. Maybe this will help revitalize graveyard strategies in modern? Underworld Breach is a very good card. A friend of mine is looking at this for use in his UR Storm list, as it is almost a strict upgrade over Past in Flames for Storm. A little hard on th...

Notably, Constrictor and SpiritAnafenza both allow the combo to go off turn 4 while applying pressure with a 2 drop.

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

So the new Heliod + Walking Ballista is a two card, turn 5, mono white combo in Pioneer. Neither card is useless on it's own, but it wont just slide into any existing shell and function reliably. The combo will need a full deck to support it. So we are probably looking at a UW combo control hybrid....

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Isn't Atarka, World Render better than Terror of Mount Velus? Redundancy imho. In the kind of board state where one is good, the other will also shine. The difference is that playing both gives you a backup if one gets exiled or whatever before it could really be used. Both should allow you lethal ...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 11/11/2019)

I don't think there's anyone here who thinks that Pioneer will not get at least two more bans before it goes live next year. One of those bans is likely to be from Green, and one is likely to be Copter. And there could be more after the metagame settles and some of the combo decks get refined. That ...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 11/11/2019)

I ne'er liked how green started getting all the blue cantrip type spells in the first place. I'm also on the Ban OUT bandwagon. I don't look at it as a bandwagon thing. I look at it as it digging 5 cards deep to find either a threat or land, but not an answer, all for zero mana. The fact that it in...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 11/11/2019)

The biggest problem with Veil is that it costs 1 Mana. If it costed 2 like the rest of it's cycle, we wouldn't be banning a sideboard card. The fact that it's the only one of the cycle to replace itself is another problem, but that wouldn't be nearly as bad if they had costed it at 2 like it's breth...

Re: Banlist Speculation

Regarding B: I don't think so. Both are strong, but are seeing play in mostly different decks since there are no fetches to fuel them and they fill different roles. Banning both, without evidence that both are problematic, would be a very bad idea. That said, I don't think either will be banned in ...

Re: Banlist Speculation

Without lands that fetch for untapped Mana turn 1, he just isn't powerful enough IMHO. He might find a home as a grindy, maindeck gravehate card but he won't ever break the format in half like he has others, because he isn't Birds of Paradise on top of his other effects, at least not on turn 1. No, ...

Re: Banlist Speculation

Nykthos wasn't a card on my radar, but the extra consistency from OuaT is pretty potent. That deck's biggest problem is finding Nykthos in the first few turns, and OuaT is made for exactly that.

Re: Banlist Speculation

Sultai has looked like the best GBx build by far because Oko is so broken. Jund and Abzan don't have anything on that level in this format. I have been playing Sultai Food to some success on Arena. I think it's worse than Bant Food because of T3feri, but I bet I would change my opinion if I had Tho...

Re: Banlist Speculation

??? I've yet to see a good Rhino deck. The format is not at a place where Rhino is good right now, there's so much other broken stuff to be doing. And honestly, if the format comes to a place where Rhino is good after some bans, it's probably a healthy format. Pretty much my thought. If Rhino becom...
