Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

2020 is not 2015. And this video handily shows that. Feel free to record your own matches and post them if you like. But I'm getting sick and tired of people saying things are "too good" based on "instinct." Especially when nearly every single one of these "instincts" ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Saw this pop up on my feed today. Only about halfway through Match 2, but so far it's playing out pretty much exactly like I expected. Including all the "Huh, I thought this would be way better, but instead it creates this weird internal tension. Other decks these days are so much more powerfu...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I don't understand. Where did I say UW Miracles is now better than UGx? I don't believe this is true whatsoever. Or at least, I am not sure if it's that true. Also, I mostly agree with what you said. I just said Bant has some holes now. It's not going to be as good as it was. Will it be better than...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

You know what I really hope this ban accomplishes? That would actually bring me joy? That all the UGxx 3-4c snow control piles fade, and make room for 1) a dedicated, no-nonsense Simic Uro Coatl Reclamation deck that basically carries the UG flag and the Snow flag and still makes Coatl and Uro work...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I agree UW Miracles is a viable deck (less sold on Esper), and also think we fundamentally agree that Bant Snow and the other 4C pile variants are just plain better than most competing options. I am confident their MWP spectrum puts all matchups at 51/49+ or at least most of them with only a few we...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Overall, a snow-targeted ban seems like a safe bet, and Astrolabe hits snow decks without completely eliminating incentive to play them (Coatl is still sweet). Wizards also tends to dislike the normalization of fair decks towards 3C/4C goodstuff piles, and Astrolabe absolutely has that effect Respe...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Banning just veil alone would be silly. Astrolabe will help mitigate needing to ban any other major UGx staple. All snow decks are basically 4 color decks. More painful mana, blood moon susceptibility and weak to land destruction will definitely make it just a good deck instead of the tier 0.5 deck...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

What will happen: they'll probably only ban one card because they just love to go slow and "see the result". I won't even try to predict which one. As a result, people who wanted some other cards will be unhappy and twin players will still have their pet subject intact and their deck in t...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Disagreeing with ban decisions does not make them wrong or have bad outcomes. If banning opal had the opposite effect of their intentions, we would have a new artifact GY recursion deck, for example. The ban was to hit decks that used opal and the ban hit decks that used opal. That you think it was...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Mox Opal was a banning many people predicted at the time and we were proven right. About Mystic Sanctuary, if astrolabe is not *enough* on it's own, I believe they will take the powerful land out as well. I don't necessarily agree it should go, I love that the card makes UR better, but it creates a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Arcum's Astrolabe is banned, big chance on Mystic Sanctuary also. I seriously want to understand what is people's problem with Sanctuary to the point of bannability, but Veil and T3feri are fine. Banning JUST Astrolabe won't really do a thing to nerf the power of Snowpiles. They'll still have Uro a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

@cfusionpm Have you checked the Grixis Thieves' deck? I think it's right up your alley and I think it's relatively cheap online. I'm currently on a UW Miracles list, because new Teferi is an incredibly stupid card. With 4 Sanctuaries and 10 fetches, between Opt, Frantic Inventory , and New Tef, I h...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

- UR Phoenix was first invented during November(where the transition from Std into Modern were made), and where Ross Meriam played multiple Crackling Drake and Chart A Course in the mainboard. Minor nitpick, Ross was the first to "name" to do well with Phoenix, he didn't invent it. The de...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I googled this problem and apparently every ebay seller has experienced a decline in sales starting around mid april of last year. Even before Covid. Maybe ebay is in danger of becoming obsolete. While the US started to have problems with Covid 19 in April, most of Europe and East Asia had problems...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Then lost Phoenix, and UW was "lost" to Bant Snow; a totally different shell that needed several hundred dollars to upgrade to, while simultaneously living on the razor's edge of receiving a ban itself. I haven't had the chance to play much lately, especially because my father is in high ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

All of those things, make Modern truly unstable in my opinion. That's why Challenges don't run some times anymore. Of course, if you disagree, you can play it, have fun, I am not try to change your mind. It's just that most of us would like to at least see a healthy modern; not another astrolabe/ve...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I don't think it came down to Arcum's Astrolabe vs. Mox Opal - it was Urza, Lord High Artificer vs. Mox Opal. The Urza Sword deck was too strong after Hogaak AND Looting got banned. They cut Mox Opal to slow the Urza deck. It did and by the time people started realizing it was nearly just as good w...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Edit: Even just looking back over those cards listed.... Torpor Orb and Suppression Field sound like they would be NUTS today. With so many ETBs and activated abilities, why does no one play em? Or does the shift away from symmetrical effects mean people would rather have things like WAR walkers th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

You need to do some maths.... If 30 cards are in the past year, and we get another year the same, that means 60/75 will be there this time next year. That is a worry, and nothing at all like the rate at which cards were added to Modern by any previous year. Modern has always changed, but it has cha...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I wish some people would think beyond that tough-guy mentality of "everybody else is a whining baby". If you've been playing long enough and/or have been around these forums for years, then you'll see why that phrase is close to true. I mean, UW is favored against Tron, Tron hasn't done a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

UBx has been terrible for years in Modern. Veil of summer changed nothing about its playability. Are you forgetting that Shadow Decks are UBx? Or that Jund is base black? Because Black has been fairly popular in Modern for years. Lest we forget that control decks now are UWx + Green mostly because ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Veil is my least favorite card in Modern, after Astrolabe. But I get that Modern is the kind of the format, which exists because many different mages can do a variety of busted plays. You can dredge 5 on your second turn and reveal two creeping chill and two creatures, I can play uro and then escap...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Yes, I know. That speaks to the issue. Is 'Crusade' an insult? A slur, or a (several) events which where justified as holy wars? I'm going to be honest, my opinion on 'Religion' all of it, is very low. I love Fantasy because...religion makes sense there. If you remove aspects of fantasy because the...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

That would be true if we hadn't predicted exactly every banning in Modern, besides Splinter Twin and Gitaxian Probe. To be fair Probe was banned/restricted in everywhere but Modern, many people were between Probe or Become Immense - I wanted BI banned because the Delver decks that I played at the t...
