Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Oh, I agree there are pro and con aspects- unlimited mtg at most times of days is an obvious pro, just not one that fits in for me- I am too time poor to take advantage...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It is probably better to invest (or at least have invested) in paper, from the whole resale point of view. I would be worried that one say they pull the plug on digital play in five years. I still don't buy anything digitally myself- I like vinyl/CD for the same reason- and paper mtg. I use x mage t...

X mage is free, too.
Worth a shot if you have friends to play with.
Best used with a live video call.......

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Paper is dead here too. We managed a month or so, where Legacy fired at 24 player event, and Standard/draft/Pioneer in the other weeks in the month Since then, Corona II lockdown......it will be a long time yet before paper returns. Modern was pretty dead beforehand, though. No longer FNM in my city...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

@robertleva I heard the apparition is being used even in legacy. Agreed on what you said on best of the O. Ring on body variants. For example, It turns tarmogoyf and that new demon into 2/2 vanilla - opponent need to possibly waste removal to get their 2/2 vanilla, is an added bonus. Apparition is ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think the magus card is very good, maybe too good. If it went to press I would expect it to do one damage more likely. Creature based hate has the issue of being creature based,of course,.maybe it is perfect as it is. I think that one is pretty much perfect. I would either do 1 damage for each man...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Still too weak for me. We need, as mentioned above, hate cards. Removal is decent, it is just not what we need. Cards saying 'we can't use planeswalkers' would be a start. Cursed Totem too. How about this: Walker Hatestone 2 Artifact Planeswalker abilities cannot be activated unless it's controller...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The thing about answers is they are no good if you have the wrong one. Modern lacks tutoring and selection, and problem permanents need immediate answers. Enlightened tutor would be great, but by and large better selection means better combos unless you have force of will available. Modern has some ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The pay model debate is interesting. Std has always been pay to play and keep up, but not so much older formats until recently. One of the benefits of playing prison style decks- thing Ponza- is that they do not upgrade the landkill with busted mythics. Older formats have not been pay to play after ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Modern benefits by not being eternal, in the eyes of WOTC, and probably won't be affected by any SL with mechanically unique cards ever. We get MH2 to screw our format over, and I can't wait for 200 dollars VIP collector boosters with the two mana hex proof uncountable green blue Jace in 108 differe...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

So far Zendi not really impacting Legacy too much. Yes, there are tools- enchantment kills in black, but then again mono b is basically Curses, or Karn/Leyline, unless you want to old style pox. So not exactly format shaking. There are bits and Bob's rather than the tidal waves of the last two years.

Re: Your last legacy games

Paradigm shift and Oracle have turned Merfolk into a plan A and Plan A deck too. Oracle has reinvigorated Doomsday. This would have been huge if it were not for Oko, Uro, Veil, Breach, Companions etc.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Modern has an issue in that the cards are very expensive, but given the reprint policy and FIRE philosophy plus their approach to banning, there is a huge risk in buying at peak prices. Pioneer faces the same issue, but the price of current standard cards is likely to be low going forward.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It is a solid role player, not a strategy in itself. It replaces itself, and is a minor spike in the wheel that makes some cards like Path or GQ into better cards, but you are working hard for it.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Iirc Mana breach used to bounce lands when spells got played, it was never a huge drawback.back then. Conundrum seems about right. My feeling is that in Modern and Legacy this card is fine. Bouncing your own lands can always be broken, but bouncing opponent's lands in this way will be fine in the wa...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

No, very much no. I think it is a welcome break from Karn, Oko, Tef, Uro et al. I think there are a couple of nearly cards, but then again DnT always has nearly creatures that don't quite make it. You might see cards that make sideboard in fringe decks- black decks nerfing enchantments might make Po...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think this set will influence Pioneer and EDH far more than Modern. I just think they have pitched power levels at Pioneer shake up rather than Modern. Everything seems too conservatively costed, there are potential role players, but not format influencers, which is a welcome change.

Re: State of Legacy Thread

Well, we fired the first UK Legacy event in months in paper. Standard was removed to accommodate us, and we sold out of our 24 slots.
I did an archetype report on my usual thread, of course, and it is very different to Mtgo.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

They are not printing land hate that kills your opponent's lands and leaves you land positive, Cleansing WF is good, but it is not something used early game to leave you land up. They don't want that stuff, so what they are printing is tolerance cards to avoid another field of the dead scenario....

Re: Monthly Legacy event top 8 archetypes- Cardiff, UK

Well back again after a long hiatus, with some paper Legacy. I believe this was the first paper UK Legacy event post lockdown to fire. Four rounds of socially distanced paper Legacy. 23 players, a last minute drop out from the paid 24 was too late for our reserve list players to get there, sadly. We...
