Expect bans or rules change.
Only after they've sold a lot of packs :)
This is the way.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think Robert has it with Modern's identity being one of format shake and ban, and that won't really change ever as it is due to the answers vs threats matrix. This set at least offers some unfun (tm) cards for Johnny Bigmonster, and it is not before time. I get the idea that they want Modern to be...

Re: [Deck] Skred Red

Primers in general on websites like this often are not worth the effort for the traffic they generate- discords have a lot to answer for. FWIW I kept Skred as a modern deck (a) it is dirt cheap and not worth selling (b) it actually got manlands in MH2 to upgrade (c) bonecrusher giant is a great card...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Competitive mtg will take a back seat in terms of *design*. That does not mean people won't flock to play. They will. Wotc may well.kerp the format on the back seat in terms if massive events, but other operators may not. Long term Modern has huge issues- it is doomed to be ban heavy and split in te...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Modern, more than most formats, suffers because the Modern audiences want staggeringly different things- you only have to look at the twin talk ban on here, let alone the actual bans themselves, to see how toxic ban talk gets when the audience is still split between what level of interaction and fai...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Take it from me- old borders are popular with my generation First printings popular with any generation- has been this way before I was born. Extendeds and all the shenigans- more of a mixed market, to say the least. When everything is special, nothing is special is the MTG finance mantra. Something...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Must admit to little interest, all these different looking cards look good until they go in a deck, where things start to jar. I am an OG printing man, or at least old border a la TSR. Other than that alt art is fine, I much prefer most of it to the generic stuff we have mainly, but I do not especia...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Historic is just rot if it were in paper. As it is it is not, and so they can take liberties with what is an easy ride for them to curate. I have no interest in any format beyond Pioneer where I cannot seriously play prison or combo prison. My remaining modern interests are effectively as prison-ish...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Personally I enjoyed the era of competitive mtg, I disliked those types, many great players I met did not feel the need to massage their egos. I enjoyed developing decks seriously. That said I was a limited player in most respects, constructed mtg was something I enjoyed but did not put the reps in. ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

One of the advantages of paper Legacy- fewer arses..When your deck cost x thousands and others do too you can't switch easily to the 'best deck', thus by playing you accept a lower win PC than you could theoretically get. The type of person who plays the best deck no matter what it is better have re...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Bans are a symptom of answers being too weak. Pure and simple, really. Nearly all banned cards in every post vintage format were combo enablers, busted mana producers for said combos, or OP threats. OP answers are rare, and you have to go back to things like Mind Twist and Balance to find an era wit...

Re: [Official] Pioneer Prices Discussion

Manaconfluenxe has huge demand from 5c 100 card formats. Additionally, Rainbow Depths in Legacyuses 4, and it is one if the few decks that is multi coloured to not use duals. Finally Pioneer has pressure on multi lands as it lacks the fetch engines. The box promo reprint was in foil, which a lot if ...

Re: [Placeholder] Primer - Death & Taxes

Skyclave is generally an upgrade over other options. Jailer is maindeckable. Monarch does not play well with Spirit of the Lab, though,. Generally if d n t is to beat 20 20s it needs tight, tight play. It has some good tools, flash flying blockers, flickerwisp, karakas and swords etc. It is the not ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Modern has never had identity beyond being the place where everyone went who had no other choice. It has become a ban fest, partly due to wotc Fire policy but partly due to an audience wanting different things. Radically different. I don't want to play with people who think T3feri should be banned, ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

: Uro did need to go from Modern but I think it is fine in Legacy. I don't think it was that bad in Pioneer, from what I could see from the outside, largely. I do think that mtg needs to rebalance with humility type cards to stop these things going nuts in future. 3 cc humility for 3cc and above cri...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I have no idea, I really don't follow league seasons. It's so hard to track any sort of competitive level of organized play after they've changed things year in and out that I gave up even trying (having very little interest in online play doesn't help much either, though it's all we have for now)....

All that said, I sure miss playing modern FNM :( Who doesn't...? Sadly most of my local modern fnms were on the way out prior to the pandemic......might get the odd one firing. Re: State of Legacy Thread

It is a very strong deck. Arcanist snowballs as much, if not more than oko. I tend to play a lot of decks that ignore oko, and especially ones with RIP/helm and Leyline/helm main, so I find arcanist/oko not as problematical as most, but those decks are niche, and overall will generally have weakness...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I have to wonder how much of that is driven by a lack of demand for physical cards. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but I'll be (pleasantly) shocked if the US is having IRL tournaments come June or July. I don't know how quickly COVID affected demand for physical cards initially, but after...

Re: [Official] Modern Prices Discussion

Prices of any one card also depend on the price of the rest of the box for in print boxes in plentiful supply. Apparition sucks up a fair chunk of the price because a lot of other cards in its box are cheap It is a widely played card, and has nestled into 3 formats with some use. , as pointed out ab...

Re: The Current State of Finance in MTG

This was the year to get out of Modern staples. RL, esp RL with EDH use, is king. RL with no use is just a bunch of bad speculators hoping to sell to others and rip off the odd person collecting sets. RL such as Mox D , wheel, duals etc. That is a different story. For people celebrating crashing of ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Wizards simply make the cards the commander players want, and shy away from what they do not want, or at least what they think they do not want. In order to have many functioning control decks you need (a) good selection and (b) broad or excellent answers. In short, without going into too much detai...

Re: What reprints would you put in Pioneer Horizons?

Pioneer horizons is not a good idea right now, even for a couple of years time. Financially the format is not expensive cf Modern et al, and it might blow up, having lost loads of momentum thanks to the ban policy of many bans/no bans and then Covid. Pioneer horizons is not going to be Standard pric...

Once played a uw hatebear deck vs ad nauseam Maindeck meddling mages T2, 3 Ouch, followed with Thalia. Certainly long before humans was a thing. The look on his face.... Boarded into t1 forge tender, t2 mage, t3 spellskite, t4 canonist. Enjoyed that game. Ruined his chances of t8. Think it was a ppt...
