Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Happy to see Lurrus go. I have no issue with the card or the decks it is in, but for my mind no card should be in that many decks in a format like Modern.

Re: State of Legacy Thread

Rl cards stay highly priced, and thus can be sold on. Modern is like a car, drive it off the forecourt and it is worth less than it was. That does not really happen to duals, Cities, Moxen etc. In other words, your Tabernacle is always able to give you back what you paid, and more, most likely. Mode...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

True, it is not clear cut. I think unbans off the initial list are more possible, though I don't expect too many candidates are left. They would have to be SFM level- promoting their vision.
WOTC I can't see thinking too deeply about hypergenesis and its ilk.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

There is a difference between unban from the initial list, and unban from a previous ban. Surely people see that? In tge latter case a deck gets banned and then allowed again, in the former it does not. Fwiw hypergenesis won't come off I think, even if safe.. They won't want a good glass cannon deck...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I personally never want to see an unban. Ever. Not just because I don't want Pod/Twin or whatever, but because it is additional shake up when we get shaken up by an already very fast release schedule. MTGO crowds might enjoy it, but paper play is the most important, because paper costs a lot of mone...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

They banned in other formats because they were obviously broken, Modern is more marginal and enjoys big events in paper in the way Legacy for one does not. Pauper is not a big event format, but the bans process there is different now.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Generally they keep things that are too powerful in one format in others adhere they are almost as powerful for as long as possible. W6 in Modern but not Legacy, Uro in reverse. They don't want across the board bans. For that reason alone I think it will be a while before Lurrus goes. In other news,...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I would be happy with a Lurrus ban, but also happy if they don't. That said Legacy needs a ban, so I expect something in Modern if the Legacy ban is big. More to talk about is their normal philosophy if a ban is embarrassing and the Legacy one is- oops we broke Delver again. Thus I expect a minor un...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Got to say, they seem to have fixed the leaky front door by patching with the roof. First up- Legacy is in a worse position than Modern, so things could be worse. Secondly both formats still offer things I want. There will always be some level of stuff I want to do., However, for myself I dislike th...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

What I think could help the format is to make an Angel's Grace type card that actually stops storm- currently the card is an excellent, near unounterable answer to Oracle, and a fog-ish card that buys a turn vs say a delver or burn deck. Sadly, it stops only damage, and thus is useless vs Tendrils e...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The worst thing about PE is it will never be banned, but should not have been made. The effect is much worse in Legacy than Modern, ditto Monkey. It would not have been hard to retool PE so that it could not remove colorless cards, which would have meant some things escape its clutches and it can be...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think we are closer in opinion than might be first realised. I think ward 3 or so is the answer to protecting prison pieces in modern. Not full hexproof, but enough to keep them safe for a time. I also like hexproof from sorcery, or heatproof from instant, so that some decks struggle whilst others...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

Agree with much of this. For my money, there is another issue. UR delver keeps combo down, without it the whole format will struggle. With UR delver there is a mega problem. Without it there is a potentially huge issue. As cards like Prismatic Ending complete a long line of cards like Decay and Borr...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

The short answer is yes, there will have to be bans. UR delver is 15 pc of the online meta, which is nuts for a single archetype in a format with so many. Every deck is gunning for it, and those that can't are not seeing play. The question is what gets banned, there is little consensus and the UR sh...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Slight misunderstanding. I don't want threats that can't be answered, I want permanent hate pieces that are harder to answer. Not impossible to answer, just harder. The stronger you make removal, the harder it is to land 'no' cards that stick like Chalice. Or Meddling Mage effects. Without those car...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Modern for me feels bad. I have seen removal get better in Legacy through Abrupt Decay to Brazen Borrower to Prismatic Ending. Critters and walkers have powered up in that time stupidly, nothing else has and the net result has been to push combo, critter aggro and tempo whilst control and prison hav...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It is nuts in Legacy, trust me. You can't run as much anti critter stuff in Legacy, and the resources it nicks snowball extremely quickly. Daze + Monkey + force pretty much means it does so much against non synergy decks like e.g. enchantress or cloudpost. So outside of those sort of niche decks, mo...

Humility, Stasis, Sinkhole, Pyroblast, Winter Orb, Karakas, Wasteland, Force of Will, Swords to plowshares, Land Tax, Smokestack. I could go on. Am I joking? Actually not really, I love those cards. Now of course, I will never get any of them, but I really don't want to play combat heavy magic, I re...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

These worlds do not exist, they do not evolve organically. They evolve if someone sits down and says "how can we take X further, what is the next logical step". They are designed. I do not believe they sat down and asked "where does Kami go next". I believe instead they said &quo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Why not call it Neon Dynasty? Why have a Kamigawa reference at all? There is no upside as all you do is disappoint those who want an actual Kamigawa set. Make a new plane, upset nobody other than those who don't like the aesthetic.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Neon dynasty is an abomination. Why call it Kami, except so that they can reference old cards and think a bit less? Everyone who wanted more kami wanted swords, feudal vibes and ancient warriors and spirits. Nobody wanted neon anything. I thought the crossover stuff was kept out of modern? Obviously...

Re: Your last legacy games

Endurance has sorted Oracle to an extent, outside of Doomsday, maybe. Merfolk swung back round to dudes. Legacy is on a decentish place, but Prismatic Ending has ruined the subtlety of UWx control. Bant is best, full stop, and the UWx decks remove anything in their path with ease. Chalice has thus b...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I noticed this when x maging with a janky straight up pillow fort enchantment deck, hard counters everywhere it felt. I could land early suppression fields, the odd halo, RIP or greater auramancy in under counters early. Other stuff would randomly get through to make a board, but in the end the onl...
