Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Well worded, but in the end, your opinion about what should be done is a bit unclear. Especially about what should be banned in their place. Maybe you don't have any definitive opinion on that, which is fine, but then it makes your essay incomplete. As I understand it you propose to: Unban: Mox Opal...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

True. So if you happen to have Veil in your hand, and was on the play (meaning you lost game 1), and the mana to cast it, and another one to protect your combo, which you also have, while taking damage from a wide board of Goblins, then sure. You don't need it turn 1, you don't need to be on the pl...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Did you actually watch the video? Right from the very first game in the video, against RB goblins: veil would have prevented the discard in the first turn and bet a card. Veil would have protected against munition expert and won the game for twin since it had exarch and twin. So yeah, better deck b...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

TBH, given the way companion works, the only way to handle it is to ban it. Would not make sense to restrict it, would it?

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Seems this debates comes back from times to times. Everyone has their own preferred definition of the word interaction and the debates mostly end-up between different interpretations of the word. Still, that one can use a card name and the word interact in the same sentence is hardly a convincing ar...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Banning Astrolabe does what? Destroy the best interactive decks? ... I'd much rather have interactive Snow piles punishing the linear degenerate decks then simply let them run rampant. I'm kinda tired of reading 'interactive' when you simply mean 'run counterspells'. The only interactive bits in sn...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

My wish: ban veil and astrolabe To make some happy: ban veil and astrolabe , t3feri , unban twin What will happen: they'll probably only ban one card because they just love to go slow and "see the result". I won't even try to predict which one. As a result, people who wanted some other car...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Disagreeing with ban decisions does not make them wrong or have bad outcomes. If banning opal had the opposite effect of their intentions, we would have a new artifact GY recursion deck, for example. The ban was to hit decks that used opal and the ban hit decks that used opal. That you think it was ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

This really isn't a great comparison. A Snapcaster Mage provides a body, which will at some point be exchanged for a card, and then it gives you a card off the flashback. In order to get the card you use with Sanctuary, you need to use up a draw step. It doesn't put you ahead on cards, it does howe...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Can anyone fill me in on why Sanctuary, removed from the current UGx base/discussion, could be seen as too much? A streamer called it a snapcaster mage that doesn't take a deck slot. Yes, yes, the comparison fails on many angles, but the point is that it recurs a powerful blue control card for zero...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

This assessment is rather poor. Yes all 3 of them together do make for a strong combination but they are not exclusively interdependent as you make them. Sanctuary needs to be in island heavy decks but these are not possible only because of Astrolabe. UW control can easily support 2-3 Sanctuaries a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Edit: Honestly, I wonder if Astrolabe is even the problem. Is it really just Uro? Uro as a card is rather ridiculous, even the non creature aspect is a card, the life to survive to play the card, and mana ramp. An ideal situation on turn 3 still lets you cast it, tap out to do so, and then put in a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Right, do that for every deck now for the past 5-6 years. Other than Ixalan block, every deck has gained cards from the past few sets, so that argument isn't even relevant. Jund has changed. Tron has changed. Every deck has gained a huge amount of cards to play. No. *YOU* do the maths to provide a ...

Seems to me the fact that they cast it before landing Ugin meant it was not cryptic command, more like silence?
Veil is a modal spell. Choose one or more:
- Cryptic command
- Silence.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Other spoiled 2021 card with modern potential: necromentia : at 3 CMC being just fast enough to be relevant and hitting non-basic, this could help Jund. It can hit any strategy. Chandra's Incinerator : double-bolt-like + this on turn 3 has testing potential for pure burn decks. At 6 mana, it avoids ...

We have had main deck pyro and now veil in Legacy for years. Deal with it. I have maindecked Rest in Peace in Enchantment decks and run into Dredge in Modern and Legacy, Leylines and ran into Storm etc. Modern has always been about choosing what to beat to an extent. pyroblast doesn't draw a card.

Re: [M21] Angelic Ascension, a little too pushed?

Unless I'm missing something, the situation you're describing is a 2-for-2: your two cards (dork, ascension) and their two cards (first removal that you responded to with ascension, second removal to kill angel). Unless they're killing your angel with thoughts and prayers? LOL. okay, if you need to...

Re: [M21] Angelic Ascension, a little too pushed?

There was a similar spell in blue a few core set back that animated artifacts. You're setting yourself to be 2-for-1 if they remove the angel, but the upside and beat is real in limited if they can't remove it fast enough. People specifically drafted it back in the days, so yes, it will be annoying ...

Re: [M21] Chromatic Orrery Command Zone Preview

This reminds me of a ruling I thought was wrong at an FNM. One guy cast covetous urge and took Garenbrig Paladin and when he cast it without green mana it was ruled that the adamant triggered. The reasoning was äs though it were mana of any color"menat the mana became green. I still think it wa...

Phasing as the old mechanic returning would somewhat confirm the speculatively spoiled new Teferi.

Non evergreen enchantment: curses?

The vanguard + legendary could mean we get sliver once again via sliver queen.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I agree with cfusionpm. The only difference is that you don't have it in your hand. It's still an extra 8th card, but it's CMC is +3 on the first cast. And Lurrus abilities are unchanged. This is THE definition of a band-aid. You will still see just as many decks including Lurrus and Yorion because ...
