Re: Kaalia, Zenith Seeker

I love new Kaalia. She draws none of the terrified hate of old Kaalia, and even if she somehow did, it's an ETB trigger so it doesn't matter. And then you play bombs for their mana cost! If she gets removed, cast her and draw more bombs! If she's not removed, deal 3 flying in the air to someone ever...

Re: Why Ruination is my least favorite card

So basically tldr is that we need more ruination. As explained, that's the world where nonbasics that aren't Gaea's Cradle become basically untenable. Maybe you run fetches with one triome. But all the budget fixing, guildgates up to temples and painlands become pretty risky and not worth playing. ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Riftsweeper

I used to play it in Karador, Ghost Chieftain rebel elves, where I really really didn't want Skyshroud Poacher gone forever, and elvish harbinger and various others could find riftsweeper.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle

I played him with a bunch of precon planeswalkers and he worked well for a certain powerlevel. Really bad walkers are pretty good when you can pay the mana for them a couple turns earlier it turns out. Arixmethes paid for mu yanling and jiang yanggu and then they gave it evasion, and a 12/12 general...

Re: Revisiting Old Ideas - what's the best Rebels commander?

Tbh I really don't like what mirror entity does to my rebelish deck--it just always reaches a point where I go "well I guess it's mirror entity time and hope they can't stop it." I think that's really less the strength of mirror entity and more that the rebel bombs of Jhovall Queen and Cho...

Re: Revisiting Old Ideas - what's the best Rebels commander?

I use Karador, Ghost Chieftain to add skyshroud poacher and elves to the mix, with karador acting as recovery after the inevitable wrath.

Regardless, I recommend anything with +b, for big game hunter and Rebel Informer, which is a dumb jank loop with another rebel to pull bgh out again.

Would Galea, Kindler of Hope work with bestow? I want to think they're not aura cards but are aura spells? Similarly sword of the realms and so forth?

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Blood on the Snow

Super belated on Kozilek's Return since I couldn't remember my password yesterday: seems like a potentially good fit on Ilharg, the Raze-Boar, who works well with breaker of armies, and it just barely spares him.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I think I've been mostly humbugging this set so I want to counterbalance that. Cards we haven't seen yet but have been referenced that I hope we get: The behir off tasha's hideous laughter . Behir's one of those dumb butt monsters you only have in D&d. It's probably a reference to something else...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Tarrasque is such a flavor failure. That it dies to deathtouch is crazy. It should have some form of auto regen or indestructible at bare minimum. This should be an utterly terrifying huge creature. Also, not a dinosaur, it should have been "Creature - Tarrasque" or if they had to not giv...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Dinosaurs are usually Animals, Beasts, or in a few cases Magical Beasts, in D&D. So the typing is fairly accurate. A few Dinos are considered drakes however, so Dragon could have worked as well. That logic could be used to justify squirrel dinosaurs, because both have been animals? (or worse, b...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

The flavor/mechanics tie-in is continuing to be a huge miss for me. Like... the tarrasque isn't a dinosaur? In D&d, it's either a beast or a monstrosity depending on edition. Mythologically, it's a dragon. But some designer thought it'd be cool if it worked with dinosaur tribal, so it's a dinosa...

Re: Top 5 Current Commander Concerns or have another freak out over Sheldon's thoughts

If their weakness is "playing the basic land type some rando chooses to hate on" that's not really the same as "playing all creatures with no defense." Every color has ways to play around removal but not every color has a legit way to defend against Lifeforce or Flashfires level...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

It bothers me (perhaps far more than it should!) that both Lloth, Queen of the Demonweb Pits and some random bard are planeswalkers. Edit: Let me expound! That they were playing fast and lose with what planeswalker meant , in a set that isn't set in Magic's lore, rubbed me wrong but sure, I mean, it...

Re: Top 5 Current Commander Concerns or have another freak out over Sheldon's thoughts

Popular commanders have targets. People that despise those commanders - for whatever reason - are going to find ways to stop them from ruining their card night. In my young days I used to get used and abused by an Azami deck, I'd get out-tempo'd by efficient Rafiq Bantvalue decks and I grew tired o...

Re: Felidar Sovereign, Test of Endurance and Approach of the Second Sun

I ran Test of Endurance in patron of the kitsune . It was... a very bad theme deck, but the terrible threat level of the deck meant I could play it and not be just slaughtered, so it was pretty easy to just drop it and continue on trying to swing in the red zone. I won a four hour game with it again...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Lifecrafter's Bestiary

Lifecrafter's Bestiary would be so much better if it were equipped with lights and sounds to remind me of the scry trigger. "Kicker G: Draw a card" stapled on every creature card is pretty much something I'll always take, though. There may be better effects but I have a lot of decks and t...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

My favorite part about damn is even the most straightforward read is swearing at the overload mechanic for existing. I'm actually sad there can't really be a full cycle of curses so we're going "f#*@#( storm," etc., while just reading our cards straight. (Also it's dammit and dammit ya'll.)

Automatic staple in Patron of the Orochi I guess?
Ifffff you want to untap all your opponents lands each turn? That's a certain kind of play but I wouldn't call it a staple. ^_^

Any deck with elvish champion though, yeaaaahhh.

Autoinclude in Lord Magnus!.

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

So... best case scenario you have like a 1/1 first striker to resolve 1 damage and 7 lost life and then non-first strikers dealing damage, or... an infect creature would deal damage in the form of poison counters and then cause 8 life to be lost?

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I like to think I'm pretty smart but I just can't parse Lloth's ultimate... like, if you attack with 8 power in dudes, does it do nothing? Does it instead matter which one hits first if they're all 1/1s? Does it calculate when resolving so like... all your attack steps in which at least one creature...

Re: Rolling dice to decide attacks -or- Triggering RxPhantom's self-destruct sequence

I don't think the 1 damage is worth drawing their attention. To be fair, I think I've played at tables where the control player or the person with the strongest deck would take the 2 damage as a personal affront and then respond by killing me next turn or something. It kind of boggles me because we...

Re: Rolling dice to decide attacks -or- Triggering RxPhantom's self-destruct sequence

I take it as a way to shed aggro--"I didn't choose to attack you, the dice did!" so I instead take it as a personal affront and attack back with a vengeance. :|

Some of my playgroup will do this for the first attack--that still makes me squint but seems a lesser evil.

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Path of Ancestry

I really like it with the old partners, because you're definitely getting at least 2 scries off of a land drop. I'd honestly play it in any 4 or 5 color deck regardless. I mean, if I could play 4 copies of city of brass instead, I probably would. It's also significantly cheaper! I've somehow never m...
