Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I know people are worried about Modern Horizons 2 breaking open Modern. Here's the way I look at it. Modern Horizons is supposed to "break" something and have many tidbits that help so many different strategies, just like its predecessor did. How disappointing would it be if every Standar...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I am worried as well considering that the damage Hogaak and MH1 did to Modern has never been recovered. We do need reprints of W6 and T3feri so you can bet on those two. What ever "bone" they throw to graveyard strategies will undoubtedly be degenerate and cause problems. We shall see.

Re: [Official] Pioneer Prices Discussion

I dont know about prices but I can tell you I LOVE Viv in my green ramp deck. I dumped Nissa Shakes the world completely for her. The tokens get overwhelming right away. NIssa I felt was win more where as Vivien actually establishes a board they cant deal with easily.

I was drafting regularly during khans and I ended up with a bunch of paper mana confluences. Ironically I have only 1 online lol.

Replacing Thughtseize for CoBu is how I side vs Burn, so basically you are skewing to a known burn type meta.

Re: Overrun effect in pioneer

Not really any overrun effects in Pioneer unless you are running Elves. Garruk Wildspeaker would be nice but he isnt legal. Vivien, Arkbow Ranger does a mini overrun with her +1. Vivien is a great card in general so I would suggest testing her.

Ive even seen the cat elemental companion deck a few times. It's got weaknesses sure but tis a fair deck in Pioneer so its a thing like all the rest.

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

@fluff: 5 color Bring to Light with Yorion seems to consistently beat my Mono Green Ramp, no easy feat. Mono green ramp into 3cc fatties Garruks Harbinger and Steel Leaf on turn 2, followed by a CoCo turn 3 is very powerful right now. Rhonas and Harbinger give black (and others) all sorts of problem...

Re: What reprints would you put in Pioneer Horizons?

THe allied manlands would help UW the most I think with colonade. Free, reliable finisher that takes up no design space and is both uncounterable as well as sorcery proof. Ravine does similar things for the colors that use it. The enemy manlands are pretty meh. Although it feels weird only havinig h...

Raven's Warning is and interesting replacement as well. I've no idea what a wishboard would look like that has answers for you to fetch, but it might be fin to experiment.

Re: UW Control / Superfriends

I have, I didnt realize anyone actually read these threads. My above list can survive without T3feri, buy clearly the deck has taken a hit. Currently I am testing: -4 T3feri +1 Detention Sphere +3 Dovin, Grand Arbiter Dovin works well as a 3cc deal with me now type of threat. I am also considering J...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

If you can find a way to profitably use DRS in Pioneer please post the list. I have not gotten much mileage out of him, despite trying him in multiple different shells. The fetchlands are just too crucial to making him reliably acceleration. Without that part of the card working, the rest of the car...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

A deck running Jitte has creatures in it. Even in a control shell, the pilot has made the decision to employ creature based win conditions. These are fair decks. Jitte isnt helping degenerate strategies that cheat into play cards faster than they were even intended to be played. Even if you hated to...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think DRS would have a lot more impact than Jitte for example. Black has no acceleration options except DRS. It would be heavily played in a number of black strategies. Jitte might see some play, but not a ton I dont think.

With no paper tourneys to skew public perception of what is good to play folks are jamming any old thing., similar how to Pioneer is. I'm sad to see Dredge but then again, Dredge and Tron are basically the pillars of Modern. /cringe

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

WOTC is just horrid at managing its IP. I don't know what else to say. In 2021 we have myriad examples of other companies doing things successfully and listening to their player base. Other companies talk to their customers and it's assumed there will be official forums and responses. WOTC does none...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Jitte should come off the list. It helps the kinds of decks that we want to help and does nothing to help the pushed degenerate strategies.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

They do not want the acceleration of Mox Opal in this format (see SSG). I have to agree with them here. Artifact control decks of the future will run it and it will be on the chopping block eventually no matter what. WOTC has already stated in previous communications that artifact control strategies...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

So you expect people to wait in limbo for 5 years for a point of theoretical stability? No one is going to plan like that and modern prices are tumbling because of it. WOTC has a format that has some interest behind it, but they treat it like an abusive spouse. They let it linger in agony for months...

AvalonAurora How much longer do they need? Modern has been around for 10 years now? If it were going to stabilize with over arching police cards it would have done so by now. No, this stability you envision is just a pipe dream. In reality, they will keep printing broken cards, at an accelerated pa...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Listen I would like a straight answer to this question: Why SHOULDN'T wotc expect to have a lot of bans going forward? I mean they have to be able to design new cards. Powerful cards. I find it completely reasonable that these new cards will break eternal card pools. So instead of going all chicken ...

Something deemed as unfun by some shady people in bannings is the new data. Yep. It's called using common sense. If you have a bad apple in a barrel, you toss it. You don't let it rot all over the fair and good quality apples making the barrel as a whole crappier. Sure, some people can eat those ro...

@foodchain: In 2021 our options for entertainment are...vast. MTG offers a niche strategic fantasy chess poker experience that is unique. Despite being unique, the game is far from a consistent good time for the players who buy into it. THis is a game that is often filled with frustration. Frustrati...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

This ban is a terrible ban, in my opinion and just makes all combo players turn away from the format. Hate to break it to you, but this is good news for a large percentage of people who want to have a fun / fair game of MTG. WHen combo decks "work" you are trying to win a game of solitair...
